2020 GEC #62 Easy Pocket Congress and Pocket Carver Thread

DLT "TBD" micarta. Muslin would be cool. Kind of fried out on stag and anything jigged at this points. Mike's in black micarta will be nice but he's across the pond for most if us. BLT blue camel bone with be nice to compare to Northfield camel bone. DLT has the bulk of the sfo run on these.
Maroon Micarta would be the smartest choice and the best looker. I like the black linen micarta too. The others are acquired taste and slower sellers. Blue Camel bone is so awesome on my #93. I got burned with my #29 Snakewood pre-order last year. I'll never trust GEC to fill a snakewood run again. I am only buying three #62s. Looks like the ironwoods are going up first. I have a banana pre-order. Prices and availability , we will see how it rolls. I just hope I don't have to come up with any Blade Forum knife money until February. I have another club knife to pre-pay for. The banana camel bone ,ironwood , snake wood , and blue camel bone will be the most wanted. (oooops , I just spotted the three blade cocobolo) That is the knife for me. Looks like the banana camel bone , cocobolo #62 pocket carver , and the #62 pocket carver natural white bone are for me. I hope this don't kill me with the Blade Forum pre-order coming up this quarter. I am going to aquire some great knives in 2020.

While I don't claim to be any sort of authority on whittlers, it seems odd to me to have all three blades the same style. All wharncliffe style. Seems like at least one of the secondaries should be a spear, or drop point? I don't care, one way or the other, it just seemed odd. It is going to be a very nice looking knife, all the way around.

I’m wondering too about a three Wharncliffe bladed knife. What’s the point? When I want a multi-bladed knife I want all the blades to be different. Else, what’s the point? A Wharncliffe, coping blade and something useful for carving like a small sell or drop point.

I had the same thought. I was surprised to not see a sheepsfoot or pen blade, something just a bit different. I haven't seen this before....granted I'm bringing limited whittler knowledge.

Yeah, the selling point for Boker's Carvers Congress is four different blade shapes. I'm a little relieved to see the redundancy on these 62s, though. It'll make it easier for me to pass on that smooth white bone.

I think the pocket carver has nicer proportions than the congress. Does anyone know of this is a split back or two spring?

the crown shield on the carvers makes it a must have......

Depends on your whittling technique. I almost only use straight edges. On this 62, if i can get a one, i will sharpen the main toothy at 10 degrees per side for pull cuts, one secondary sharpened at 10 dps for soft wood, the other at 12.5 dps for hard wood and very concave cuts , on both secondaries i will set a fine edge for push cuts. No redundancy. Sometimes the way a blade is sharpened is more important than its shape.

AHA!! There's my problem! I don't have a technique! :D

That's why I say I'm not an authority on whittlers.... MOST of my knives are whittlers, at least to me. My idea of whittling is just playing around with a random stick, smoothing a surface, cutting a groove around it, just making shavings.

I like the idea of wood carving something artistic, or useful with knives, I've just never planned it or done it....

edit:.... but I admire those that can, and do...

This whittler reminds me of the custom 82 Dixie carvers, being sold by a GEC dealer, a few months back.

That's what i'm talking about! That and carving tool handles.

Can I ask how does the #62 pattern differ from the #13 pattern? From the pictures I have seen they look very similar.

Thanks. I have a 13 and love it, am considering a 62 and wondered if there was enough difference to justify it. The white ivory looks rather splendid, though have just seen that the only UK dealer has a SFO for black micarta which could well be magnificent.

If you love the 13 and like a configuration of this run of 62s, I wouldnt hesitate to grab one. I have two 13s, one 62 and 3 on reserve for this new run. I kinda love single spring, two blade knives and the congress feels great in my hands.

I was really hoping for a run of whittler's with this model but like others I was thinking two different types of secondary blades. Oh well maybe someone will do a SFO with a different blade set up?:D

Not so fast. There is a 2 blade 62 unicorn ivory calling your name.

Just because we have a drawing may not necessarily mean that’s what will be produced.
