2022 Ben Hogan #65 thread

I sort of slept on this release, and was ok with not picking one up, although I did like the looks of a couple of them (particularly the two stainless options), and have been curious about this pattern in the past.

Then Mike’s not-so-early reserve came, so I went ahead and put my name down for one. Today I got the email saying it was my turn to choose, and I suddenly realized I didn’t know which one I wanted! It was down to the Osage or the Tortoise Shell, but I had to come here and browse the pics in this thread to make up my mind. 😁

I love the bar shield on the Osage, and the look of the wood when new, but I know it can darken/dull a lot over time. That’s not always a bad thing, but it was a consideration. I also think the lanyard and bead are a nice little extra touch.

I’ve always been a fan of the tortoise shell acrylic that GEC uses, I think it give knives a nice classic look. (One of my first GECs was a tortoise shell Beer Scout.) I like to fish, and have kicked myself previously for not buying one of the Farm & Field & Fish #65’s (especially one in Nifebrite), but I don’t see myself ever actually using the scaler/degorger for anything other than opening a bottle or two. The keychain whistle was a nonfactor; it would definitely come off and likely spend the rest of its life in a drawer.

Anyways, I ended up going with the Tortoise Shell Fish Keeper, just because I think it’s a slightly more interesting knife. I’m looking forward to it! 🎣
I also jumped in on Mike’s “not so early reserve” though I had resisted picking any of these up in other drops and had planned to skip them altogether.

I went with the Indian Paintbrush - wanted carbon steel and thought the bullet shield looked pretty cool!

Guys, how does the "Indian Paintbrush" red looks like? Is it like a light strawberry red or more of a blood red? I have never seen a GEC knife in this color.

I was lucky enough to get on the early reserve list for my first GEC and chose the Indian Paintbrush - some photos I had seen of GEC's Indian Paint Brush bone ran the gamut of colors but all looked nice. See the 420114 on their blog here.

Then I thought the Bullet shield would match really nicely with a Remington that was still available so I quickly ordered that... and by the time I came to from my GEC-induced blackout I'd overpaid for a few #14s on ebay. The next few mail days are going to be interesting.

I’ve not seen any photos of these in the wild yet. The progress photos on GECs site look to be on the lighter side. I have no experience with any previous runs in Indian paintbrush so I’m not sure what to expect.

I guess what I’m saying is I’m no help whatsoever :D

It seems that there are some lightly coloured and some with deep red

I was browsing the internet, as you do, and saw that DLT appears to have the Indian Paint Brush and the Bone in a drop tomorrow (Thursday, July 14th). I'm still waiting for the postman for mine (and have overpaid on the bay for another while waiting...) so I'm happy to encourage more folks to suffer refreshing tracking information with me :)

I took receipt of the Northfield today, to round out this run nicely. I think this pattern lends itself well to a nice everyday carry with it's slimness, lightness, and long slender blade.

The Tidioute and Northfield definitely have stouter pulls than the stainless offerings and they do not exhibit the same blade rap as the stainless either. If I were to pick a favorite, it would (without question) be the Tidioute in its smooth white bone and corset shield - it's a classy piece and will make an excellent carry.

These 65s represent the last GECs I will be buying for awhile - with the exception of the possible forum knife, I am going on a hiatus and will have to place my trust in Lady Luck going forward if a release happens to catch my fancy. I have somewhere in the middle of 100-200 GEC knives and it's been hard to get excited about them for a little while now - especially since putting that 88 Ace in my pocket, most everything else has paled a bit. Hopefully a break will freshen up my outlook on GEC knives. In the meantime, I will focus on some other pursuits and potentially other knives.

nice! yeah, i jumped on the smooth white bone with one place only to see the gouge and then called them to cancel the order. manage to get it at a much fairer non premium inflated price with knifeswapper knifeswapper 's outfit. given whats coming next, ill be sitting the next one out too. actually i hope they make more patterns i dont care for, save some dough

Nice set!

I made the same decision last year to sit out on drops awhile, and a year later I am sitting here with a 65 in my pocket and ordered a dang sud buster (that I want but don't need) today!
