2022 Ben Hogan #65 thread

This one came in today; pretty excited about it and looking forward to the Indian Paintbrush Jigged Bone.

These turned out really nice. Great pictures too. I can't get beyond the spectator seats it seems so keep posting!

I can safely say that the #65 Ben Hogans have never really been on my radar in the years that I have been a GEC collector. I'm happy that GEC opted to run them again though and equally grateful that I get to become acquainted with them.

It's fun that they opted to do a run of stainless as well as their typical 1095 - kind of provides a little something for everyone. I don't have the Tidioute and Northfield in yet but the two in stainless are pretty pleasing. It's hard to go wrong with Osage - aside from it being just a stellar multi-purpose wood all around, it's easy on the eyes too (especially as it ages). I don't think GEC uses the square bar shield enough, I think it classes up pretty much any knife that receives it and despite the lackluster satin finish, the shield dresses up this very user-friendly knife quite nicely.

The Fish Keeper took me by surprise - I did NOT expect to like this nearly as much as I do. I am no fan of acrylic covers but I've become pretty smitten with this tortoise shell acrylic - it is unbelievably eye-catching and exhibits a lot of depth that is difficult to capture with a camera. Plus, it's hard to think of a better choice of material to be paired with a stainless blade and on a knife that is expected to get water and fish guts all over it. I plan on getting a bail for it and it will become a regular companion as I get my kids more acquainted with fishing in our back yard.

The size and shape reminded me a lot of some other knives that I own and so I pulled one out - yes, barring the difference in bolster shape, the #65 is very reminiscent of the Queen English Jack. I never got around to carrying or using any of my English Jacks due to the obtuse edges but these Hogans do not have the same problem - they will cut just fine.

My only gripe against these knives is the dreaded blade rap - it's rather annoying for such a slender blade but it's there all the same and I'll need to exercise care when closing these for the time being.

I am a big fan of Osage so I jumped on it and was not disappointed in the least. Great combo with the stainless blade and the shield is just…appropriate on this slender beast.

I am also a fan of tortoise acrylic but have not picked one up yet.

This one went right in the pocket. Feels like I've been looking for one of these forever! I really like the swedge, grind, thickness of blade stock... It's a bit thicker than I thought. The small guy here is another user - GEC 06.

Admiring how my blade is shaped, taking a little closer look than normal... I think the stainless blade is a little different than the smooth white bone version. The nail nick location is different, maybe the swedge is adjusted a bit because of that. I wonder if the blade thickness is the same.
