2022 Ben Hogan #65 thread

Mine had some pretty significant gaps out of the tube. Flushed it out and now the gaps are less noticeable however there is still a gap between the bone and liner as well as a gap between the bolster and bone. I was told by many to return it, instead I started cutting things with it. Blade was sharp, fit and finish perhaps lacking.

Nice to see that most people enjoy these knives!! I got a chance to buy a Carbon and a Stainless, both of which have reasonable F&F!!
I prefer the pull on the white bone - about 7 1/2 vs. 6 1/2 for the stainless. Both are adequate, but I prefer the firmer pull!! Nice knives, GEC!!Ben Hogans 2022.jpg

At least one dealer was selling the white bone version without a blade etch. Has anyone seen one of those yet?

How do you guys like the pull on the 65? I'm thinking even if it's stiff, it shouldn't be too bad because the notch is so far from the pivot, right? Stiff pull is my biggest peeve with slip joint knives. I'm thinking of going for one of the bullet knives.

The pull is light for a GEC, but not because of qc, its just a long, narrow knife. Similar feel to my 97. So far its been a really good food slicer, there just isn't much resistance to so little steel surface area.

That's good to hear. This knife reminds me of one of those granddaddy barlows.

Nice pair ya got there! Thanks for mentioning the pull, I've been looking for something a little lighter.

Do you mean they should all come out about the same? Would that be because of the difference in spring material?
A good chance they will be close!! They are made on an assembly line of nearly identical parts!!

I can confirm. I went with the Osage and White bone. The Osage is about a 4-4.5 and the bone is a 6-6.5 for me.

If you want a lighter pull I’d go Osage.

That's great to know, guys. I don't think I'd pick nits over what you guys would call anything from a 4.5 to a 7.5. I'm just after something a bit lighter than my bear trap Remington bullet knife, and I think the upcoming Northfield is right up my alley.
That Osage has summer carry written all over it though....

I sort of slept on this release, and was ok with not picking one up, although I did like the looks of a couple of them (particularly the two stainless options), and have been curious about this pattern in the past.

Then Mike’s not-so-early reserve came, so I went ahead and put my name down for one. Today I got the email saying it was my turn to choose, and I suddenly realized I didn’t know which one I wanted! It was down to the Osage or the Tortoise Shell, but I had to come here and browse the pics in this thread to make up my mind. 😁

I love the bar shield on the Osage, and the look of the wood when new, but I know it can darken/dull a lot over time. That’s not always a bad thing, but it was a consideration. I also think the lanyard and bead are a nice little extra touch.

I’ve always been a fan of the tortoise shell acrylic that GEC uses, I think it give knives a nice classic look. (One of my first GECs was a tortoise shell Beer Scout.) I like to fish, and have kicked myself previously for not buying one of the Farm & Field & Fish #65’s (especially one in Nifebrite), but I don’t see myself ever actually using the scaler/degorger for anything other than opening a bottle or two. The keychain whistle was a nonfactor; it would definitely come off and likely spend the rest of its life in a drawer.

Anyways, I ended up going with the Tortoise Shell Fish Keeper, just because I think it’s a slightly more interesting knife. I’m looking forward to it! 🎣
