2022 GEC #36 ElephantToenail/Elephant Toe/Sunfish Thread

I think the Cocobolo is definitely the "belle of the ball" for this run. It's a wonderful pattern to show off the excellent grain patterns and such in what usually tends to be a very pretty wood.

Mine is very brown, without the reds I am used to seeing in Cocobolo. Uniform grain, with excellent contrasts, and nicely matched on both sides.

A really well made knife.

Can't snub your nose at that one. Very nice! I like all the open pores in it.

Does anyone here know or have any thoughts on keeping the 36's in the bubble wrap they came in long term? Just don't want any ill effects from the plastic in it.

This knife is definitely a good worker. The blade style is similar to a utility knife, and does a fantastic job with cutting tasks. The bolster and shield scuff up pretty easily, and I started to get some rust quickly in the nail nick and near the pivot after a wet morning in my pocket, but it cleaned up pretty good with some oil. I really enjoy how flat this knife is in my pocket. It carries very well for a knife this size.

These are much more fun than I thought they would be. The cocobolo on this one is ridiculous. The spring is dead flush in all 3 positions. No doubt it weighs down the pocket, but I'll try some carry.
Nice catch Kiro Kiro . This is my favourite of the Cocos so far, hope mine has some blonde through it.
Cocobolo is cream of the crop imho.

Another beauty 🤩, it has an aged look to it already.

I would not keep any knife or collectable stored in bubble wrap. There are many reasons for this, the main one being that plastic is garbage.
That is why the comic guys buy special acid free bags for their valuable books.

I have also seen rifle stocks stored in bubble wrap that did not do well. Anyway, just my 2 cents worth since nobody was chiming in.

These 36s are amazing! The banner shield on the cocobolo is top notch.

That was kind of my hunch. My coins are sandwiched in acid free non PVC holders to prevent corrosion and staining like the old mylar holders used to do. I have some extra new sheets of GEC wax paper I think I will put to use. Thanks for your reply.

Keep a light coat of oil on the metal...... Store them in as dry (humidity) a location that you have...... I'd remove them from the bubble wrap and rewrap in oiled shipping paper......

Yes, as I do with all my GEC's and they reside in a climate controlled safe. I was skeptical of the bubble wrap as soon as I opened the tubes. Good protection for shipping, but not storage. Thanks for your input as well.
Edit: I won't oil the paper though on some of the wood as I strive to get light colored figured wood , and don't want to darken them. I check everything periodically and oil the metal components as needed.

So I had planned on sitting this drop out - just felt it was gonna be too big for my tastes and I didn't really care for the elephant shield. When they announced the Cocobolo I started to waiver, and then last week I happened to be in the right place at the right time when I received an email announcing a drop. This little fella showed up today and I gotta say it is nearly perfect. The pull is a manageable 6 or 7, flush in all three positions, no gaps, no rub, no rap. My covers aren't super figured, but they are mighty nice and the banner shield is awesome. Being a single blade, it actually doesn't feel uncomfortably large in hand either. I'm glad I have no self control!

Looking forward to the jigged india, was lucky enough to score one of those. Really wanted an ebony originally, but the jigged one is super unique and neat looking so I’m happy with that. These other covers are all beautiful
