2022 GEC #59 Shaffer Farm Whittler Thread

I know you have some very nice Stag and I enjoy seeing them my friend .
I have the same opinion . I understand why prices have to go up but that is a pretty high price for a little knife that I would carry rarely and never use without getting to see the Stag first . There were some few pictures of some decent Stag but the odds are low to get some really good Stag IMHO . I also passed on the Stag even though it is my favorite material for knife covers . I am retired for 20 years not making the money that some of you young guys are , so I will leave them for you . Have you noticed that prices of knives on the Exchange are going down ????

Well, I do have the privilege of seeing the knives and picking the one I want. I like popcorn and was able to get a pretty nice one. Not many had that option. A good amount of them look concave to me. Good stag is getting harder to get and more expensive. I'm not seeing anything that looks as good as good as it did even 2 years ago. I am seeing the prices on the newer models tapering off a bit. It may be due to greater quantities being produced. I'm starting to see some exceed a thousand made. The older ones seem to be holding their own value wise.

Wow, what's happening here? 😲 Different shields, different etches... I guess older NF etch is satin finished, right? But I can't explain the shield, only if they ran out of crests. 😆
Yes, older BF etch is satin. Not sure why different shields were used on the acrylic.

This is interesting. I'm not sure about them running out of a shield, especially with the IW having 2 different finishes and etches. I wonder if they are intentionally creating different varieties of the same knife to make true collectors discover this and seek both varieties. I'll see what I can find out when they return from their hiatus.

Definitely interesting and something we haven't truly figured out...really no one has reached out to Joan Mae and asked. It is definitely odd since the differences between the two are very minor...but not unlike Bill to throw us a curve ball now and again :) The odds that they ran out of a particular shield are very low but not impossible I suppose.

But when would they have realized that they didn't have enough? The covers are undoubtedly cut for the shield in mass in a step well before the shield. Do they pre-batch all the components before any process starts?

All very good questions. You would think they would already have allocated the shields before they start cutting the pockets in the material. Either they realized they weren't going to have enough from the start and ran out of production time....or it was fully intentional and planned all along.
Or perhaps the whole process is more parallel than I imagine...where they are putting shields together the same time they are cutting pockets in the material. 🤔

It doesn't look like any of this came to light until after they were shut down. The question looms as to how much Joan Mae is aware of as she really doesn't have much involvement with the finished product until it is tubed and ready for shipping. I don't think we'll find out until they return unless someone else here is in the know.

This actually came to light a few weeks ago but came up again recently here. Joan Mae is my direct contact at GEC...Bill is not very easy to get a hold of :) She asks Bill or Randy or whoever and is very helpful  For engineering questions, I reach out to Randy but I'm not sure he will know the reason (and he is travelling with his family at the moment I am pretty sure)...I will ask though.

Good question, but if they precut them all prior and ran out of that shield and couldn't proceed, they would either have to shelve or scrap those handles. I personally kind of doubt that. I think the variations were intentional.

There are very few errors or missteps from GEC. Pictures are staged, posted on the site then quickly taken down, random shield changes, etc. It is all orchestrated.
