2022 GEC #59 Shaffer Farm Whittler Thread

So for the whittlers out there how does having having the main spear point of the 59 compare with the main clip points of the 29? Or are they functionally the same in terms of whittling. I know members like Jiki Jiki Mentioned a preference for the smaller wharncliff main on the 62 but was curious about the main clip vs spear.

Levine calls the 29 a cattle knife. I've never considered it to be a good carving knife myself, great EDC though. Others may have different experiences.

I got my reservation email for the ironwood. First GEC I’ve ever turned down after a dealer reached out. Not a fan of the ironwood cracks, I like to hope they happen during shipping. I can’t imagine they’d let them leave in good faith that way, right? Has to be a moisture level in transit thing?

My stag should be here next week. Knowing my misfortune I turned down a potential lemon just to get another! Stay tuned 🤞 From what I have seen in the stag I have been impressed. It’s not the stag of old, but it’ll do!

At least I have this bad boy to fall back on..

I bought an S from the factory store. When the crack issue started to crop up I went back and looked…sure enough my S had one (took a pic same day and I was there).

Not particularly bummed as it’s tight and I bought that one as a user.

Really like the Acrylic, gives a Cell Vibe without the gas :D Nice lot of swirls in that one, any faces to be seen?;)

Might be a Mallard Duck's head on the mark side and left side of the shield. 🤣

I love the patterns and colors in my acrylic, but, it is not even near the premium knife that I have come to expect from GEC. Flat spots all over the acrylic. It looks more hexagonal than rounded, like it should be. In all fairness, it should have been rejected for sale. Not correctable because one of the creases runs through the shield. :( The Ironwood quality in the same model is top notch. Maybe an employee that needs eyeglasses or better training ? Makes the second time in the last four months that I have received a GEC knife with that same problem.

I sincerely hope that this kind of quality is just a bump in the road and not a sign of what's to come from a company that I have had huge respect for, over the years. These are knives that are sold as premium pocket knives and for the prices asked for them, it is my strong opinion is that quality should be expected.

Appreciate the candid review Mr P. People should always tell it how it is for them about knives, correct antidote to group-think and Fanboyism

There have been other reports of lacklustre acrylics on other runs of knives in the past couple of years, this is of concern as I always have had a high regard for GEC's efforts in this area. Looks like their suppliers are not what they used to be...

Here's a shot of an Acrylic I like to use and carry on a Conductor.
