30-06 or 270

I suggest you google Elmer Keith and then google Jack O'Conner, this fight has been going on a long, long time. Chris

I vote for the 06, with lots of ammo on the market out there. but thats just me.

Depends on where you live. Here in MI, .30-06. My relatives in up state NY all swear by .270.

Personally, .30-06. Ammo can be found just about everywhere. From the local Wal-Mart to South Africa.

.45-70 or .308

BUT...

If you are gonna choose between those two feuding siblings, go with the .30-06

I prefer the 270 Win. I've been shooting that caliber for deer hunting since I was 16. Before that, it was a 243 win. I don't know how much you shoot your -06, but frankly a couple boxes of 270 shells do me for years. Only takes one shot. (Three to check my scope.) I don't really care if I can find 30-06 shells in South Africa.

Another vote for the '06. That said, the caliber that currently has my eye is the new .338 Federal.

Ohio? bullet availability shouldn't be the deciding factor. Distance to target should be. Even the most staunch 06 lover admits that the 270 shoots flatter, it's simple physics. Having said that, I personally would want the 06, because I don't shoot better than it could. You may be a better marksman, and be able to take advantage of the 270.

Depends.
The 270 will do 99% of what the 06 will with less recoil. The only real advantage the 06 has is a wide range of bullit weights to choose from.If you hand load the 06 can be loaded for small to very large game.

A question that goes back to the thirties. There is no answer so I have one of each. I'm sure it will be asked for another 75 years. Even if rifles become obsolete, the question will be which one WAS the best. :D regards, ss.

I'd vote for the .270 It's closest to what I've been shooting for 20+yrs the 7mm Mauser. All the power & accuracy as 30-06 with less than half the kick.

I'll take a .30-'06 any day! Besides the wide variety of factory loads available for it, you can buy simple, inexpensive chamber adapters to fire several other cartridges in the '06 chamber to make your rifle even more versatile: .32 pistol rounds for small game, 7.62 x 39, and .308 Win. Take a look around at www.mcace.com and I'll bet it will open your eyes, regardless of what your favorite caliber is. These adapters are good quality. I've used them for years. If you've never heard of these you are missing out on a good thing. They sell rifle and pistol caliber sleeves for shotguns, too.

06,
I will back up the ammo availabilty with this, surplus 06 ammo can be had in reloadable cases relatively cheap. I see the gun grabbers resticting ammo and components as a back door "defacto gun ban"
The military calibers will always be available

As already said, this question has been asked for over 75 years. The 1st commercial .270 rifle was made in 1925.

The question that hasn't been asked is, what are you going to use it for? The .270 Winchester is fine for deer and black bear. These days it is considered a bit light for elk size critters, but if you have the skill, it will do the job.

The .30-06 has the advantage of being able to handle bullets up to 220 gr. which may or may not play a part in your selection of caliber.

RE: Accuracy and trajectory. There is no practical difference. The .30-06 was used for many years in match and sniper rifles with excellent results.

RE: Recoil. Check the tables yourself. With typical loads in a 8 1/2 pound rifle the .270 produces about 14 ft/lbs of free recoil with a 130 GR. bullet. The same rifle in .30-06 produces 15.5 ft/lbs of recoil with a 150 gr. bullet. I doubt that most people would notice the difference.

I think the .30-06 has the edge in versatility, but you wouldn't go wrong with either. The truth is that any reasonable rifle of any reasonable caliber will work fine for most purposes. The skill of the rifleman is much more important.

For most
