30-06 or 270

Not to mention that there is more .270 ammo within 20 feet of me than 30.06 ammo. Of course that is also true of 7.7 ammo. Oh! Which is better, 30.06 or 7.7? :D

Well its an -06 for me. Tried & True. There is just something about a 30-06 slug when it hits its mark and drops the game,, you know its all right!.. Of coarse I may be just a hair biased though since I grew up shooting one.

Eventually I got a custom made from the 1940's, hand carved sporterized stock with a very finely tweaked Mauser action. Commissioned by my favorite Uncle and passed down to me some years later. One of only 2 ever produced.

My preference would be the .270 using good X-bullets. The .25-06 is perfect for anything in Texas, mulies included.

So subjective,,,,,no right or wrong answer.

It really boils down to what you are able to shoot best, and matching cartridge to rifle.

For me, the Browning .270 SS and Federal Premium's are tack drivers. Like Codger, tried half a dozen combinations in it and it loves the FP 130gr.

White Feather,,,, If you haven't read it, read the book about Carlos.

Easy the 30-06. If only because the best rifle of all time was made with it. M1 Garand. Nothing beats a pinnnng

Hard to answer with that little info. If I were only hunting deer, large varmints, Sheep and Black bear I would choose the 270 every time. If Elk, Moose and Grizzly were on the Menu then the 30-06 would get my vote. The two calibers use the same casing so you are only talking bullet weight and thus sectional density and ballistic co-efficient. Both calibers have bullets available in about the same range in these categories . The 270 shoots a bit flatter and the 06 has the edge in bullet choice and bullet weight. Personally I am a 270 man.

The .30-06 is most popular because it's a former military cartridge with a big head start in a lot of surplus rifles. If it had trailed the .270 Win. in introduction, it would also trail in popularity just like the .308 Win. and .280 Remington.:D:D:D ss.

Yup, it's the shooter and not the round that makes the difference. That said, all I've owned and shot that's in this choice is the .30-06.

I'll take the .270. It is big enough for what I hunt, including elk, and has a flatter trajectory. With modern bonded bullets deep penetration on heavier game, like elk, is not the problem that it had been in the past. However, because the .30-06 and the .270 are so similar, I'd say shoot the one that you shoot better. If I were going for something larger than elk, like moose or brown bear, I would not take my .270, but I wouldn't take .30-06 either. In my mind, the only right answer is to take the one that you are more comfortable with, they are too similar to choose a difinitive "better" cartridge.

7MM(7x57)Grew up shooting one.REM700.Still my primary deer gun.Always use 140gr CORE-LOKT SP.Got a 230lb. buck at 250yds.Dropped in his tracks.Think it was a lung & heart shot. One of those perfect shots you only get a hanful'of in a lifetime. That was a few yrs back.I don't get out there as often as I would like(who does?).Well,Thanks for putting up with my blabbering/ranting "Big Fish Story";)No it really happened.:)It was a great day.
MERRY CHRISTMAS :D:D:D

Since you said one of them, I would go with the 30-06 for versatility. That and I own a 30-06 for my big gun. There's nothing wrong with 270, 30-06 has just got a little more power, and you said one gun.

Have fun :)

My standard answer to all the "Which is the best deer round?" questions.

Of the standard cartridges all based on the 57mm Mauser case; 7x57, 8x57, 30-06, all its clones from .24 thru .35, the .308 and all its clones .24 thru .358 and the 6.5x55.

There is not a 10% difference between any of them on thin skinned deer sized game. Furthermore, 90% of hunters can not shoot well enough under field conditions to realize the differences and advantages so laboriously explained by gun writers over the past 50 years or more giving the advantage to one bore diameter or another.

Chose what you can get at a good price and shoot well. They all will do the job.

:jerkit:

.270 killed everything I wanted too with it. Not bad recoil, flatter shooting at longer distances.

Yup, that's what I am thinking too.. Does anyone here have the ballistics on the two calibers??. You know, muzzle jump, feet per second, kd energy, ect.. ect.??

That would help settle it.. Right?

'06. It's more versatile. When ever you're in doubt, stick with a military caliber. '06, .308, .45-70, etc.;)

I have a pre '64 Winchester in .270, and a Belgium made Browning in 30/06. I gave the .270 to my son. The .270 is all someone needs for North America. Big bears excluded. The .270 is a joy to shoot. I think reloading makes it a real deal.

Oh, yea, I still kill game with my 30/06. There is no "wrong" choice.
