.38 Special!!

Christian, if you use Bernie Levine's terminology, it is a serpentine double-end Jack, IMO.
Pen knives are loosely differentiated by size and length. If it is a "weight" of knife that you would use to cut a quill, it's likely a pen knife.
If it's size and weight would carve a hammer handle, it's a Jack knife.
I repeat, it's a loose definition, but generally useful.
YMMV
;)
:D

Thanks for the insight Charlie, though I have to admit that I'm more confused now than ever.

I guess that means that at 3 5/8" closed my Christians knife is a serpentine jack.

A pearl handled jackknife...what a contradiction.

I know it's only a preliminary drawing, but you never know:D Maybe one day Charlie you may have an SFO made that I don't like:D:D This will be another winner!!

Mark, the GEMs will be Tan like the recent Barlows, which will look different on this jigging, and Cranberry red, like the sample #48 a few posts back.
There is a third, which may be Ebony. If we use Ebony, the Diamond shield will be plain (unstamped) on the wood handles.
Lyle's will be Antique Yellow jig which will again, look different (I gave him first choice;)), and two other colors/materials I don't know about yet!

That sounds great Charlie! I thank you and so does my wallet! :D

You guy's that are getting one are lucky!.....I love it. It's a nice tribute to Charlie and Lyle, hope to see you guy's this summer at the picnic.:)

Your knife is a beauty, and could in fact be called either a Pen, or a Double-end Jack! It pretty much straddles the line between the two. It has the length of a Jack, but is graceful like a pen!!

Here's another contradiction!!

Gotta love those contradictions. That knife is incredible Charlie. I don't think I've ever seen a barlow with MOP covers before.

Sorry for the thread drift.

Another homerun Charlie, or rather 3 homeruns for you and 3 for Lyle!! I love the pattern, your etch, and the jigging. Can't wait to see and hopefully own some of these beauties. The rat-tail bolsters and drawn swedges are outstanding!!

My vote is for "swell-end serpentine double-end rat-tail Awesome Jack". Simple, right? :D

So here is my nuclear option. Very nice opens smooth 5-6 in the pulls, very crisp snaps, lots of swirly goodness, very pocketable!!!

As for the Farmers can hardly wait, I've got one of the Northfields on order. I like this whittler so much I might be getting another...Stag?

I have been away the last few days on business other than knives. I am trying to play catch up with Bill and Charlie, new to all involved in this process. If not for those two, including pertinux and gunstockjack(editor of back label and etch artist) thanks guys, this probably never would have happened.

I would like to thank Bill Howard for building this pattern I love. After seeing my passion for it,he seemed to be interested in making one,but I never expected it to come to fruition this quickly. I like Bill. I like Charlie. I like Barry. I like Sarah. I love you guys.Bill has kinda gone out of his way, trying to make this knife to my expectations and something we could all be proud of.I know it's hard for him, you can't always do what you'd like to ,when people's livelihoods depend on you.

I think God placed Charlie and Bill as friends for all our benefit. Good things happen for good people.

Ok,as Charlie stated my version will be handled with the antique yellow in the new jigging. Also hopefully, a smooth white ivory or old ivory looking bone (Bill's working on it),and an ebony one. The brand and etch will be Lick Creek ,which has a sentimental connection for me.

Pictures of the etch forthcoming.I hope everybody enjoys this as much as I am,it's an epic moment for me,thanks Charlie.

Nice "Nuclear Whittler", jschenk, and first picture!
Winner, winner, chicken dinner!!

Welcome home Lyle! You've got work to do!!
;)
:D

J,that pattern got me started, thanks for showing a beautiful knife.

Charlie and Lyle - just a quick but sincere thank you! I've long been interested in the FJ pattern and frequently scour the marketplace for nice examples. Unfortunately, to this point I've always either been too slow or outbid for the nice examples that have popped up from time to time, so I was really excited to learn that the two of you were breathing new life into this fine pattern. Once again, I might be a little too late, as I'm only on the 'standby' list for a few of these new knives, but all I can ask for is a chance. I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished products - either photos, or more hopefully in person.

THANK YOU! :)

Just saw this handsome knife on GEC's frontpage. Wow I bet that Chestnut Peachseed is outta sight and with the shield? Be still my heart!

I have an Ebony ordered, but will likely be searching this one out as well.

Very similar shield as used by Wester Bros. of yester years on these double end ,too big for a pen, jacks. Love the curves!

My 38 just arrived. It exceeds my expectations. Fit and finish is excellent. Half stops on the two smaller blades, none on the main. Edges are sharp, but could use a bit of stropping to get the hair to pop.
Love the jigged bone on this knife and the color. Well done.

Those sure are very nice knives bozack and JSCHENK. Now I want one, Dang. :grumpy::):)
Lyle, beautiful old examples as usual. :D

Wow, this is shaping up to be an amazing pattern! Those SFO Whittlers are going to be purdy!!!
