4.1 thread

Shouldn't the "1sts" (starters, pre-orders) go out before the 2nds?

Nah, they come across them during production/finishing and put them up for sale so folk have a chance at them, and they put a shorter deadline on delivery for those so that they don't sit around. Remember, the starters and pre-orders featured a LOT of models all at one time and some of those haven't even begun production yet.

Folk have complained about seconds sold later being delivered before firsts sold MUCH earlier via pre-order and pre-sale, etc. but it is how S!K has been operating for quite some time. Starter/Pre-order/Pre-sale guarantees you a knife but not a delivery date and production + QC can take quite a while with this company. 'Seconds' are first-come-first-served, and still take a while for final build, but are ready much faster because they are built alongside the "firsts". So some lucky soul gets his 'first' that he's been waiting a year+ for and another gets his 'second' that he's been waiting a month or two for. *shrug* Keep in mind that there are a LOT more 'firsts' going out than 'seconds' at any given moment.

Right, they aren't deliberately making seconds, they just run across them as they build firsts.
Rather than having them sitting around cluttering up the shop they sell them as they find them, and ship them when they are ready.
They are doing the same thing for the firsts (shipping them when they are ready) but you don't hear nearly as much about them.

I wonder why this is. Plenty of people have reported how they've paid for a 4.1 second on multiple weekly sales, but the internet only shows evidence of one, single 4.1 factory first.

With the 4.7s, there were many weeks of factory seconds getting delivered before the starter orders were completely sent out. Maybe my anticipation of a starter order distorts my perception.....

I understand all that. My question was not about shipping, say, 3.5 1sts before 4.1 2nds, but about 4.1s, both 1sts and 2nds.

While finishing a production run of any model, some examples are discovered that don't meet the standard for 1st quality. I would expect them to be set aside as 2nds, to be finished and shipped after all the 1sts on order (of the same model in current production) have been finished and shipped to the customers who've been waiting more than a year.

To me this seems not only fair, but good business practice. Most of us understand the reason for the wait between ordering and receiving our knives and we are fine with that. The process takes time. Duh.

But further delays just to shove 2nds out of the shop before finishing the starters and preorders would be breaking faith with those who put their money down first. That seems unlikely but it was hinted at in an earlier post so I sought clarification...and SK!'s actual practice in this respect is still not clear to me.

Perhaps Ellie can enlighten us...?

Survive has chosen to operate in this manner for about a year.
They've stated that it doesn't make sense to carry inventory of seconds for months while they fill orders.

I don't know that we've ever had a satisfactory answer to the question of why the firsts don't make the headlines, but the best guess seems to be that the majority of factory first buyers aren't online.
I think that the forumites are uniquely in the know about the weekly sales of the seconds and so we hear a lot about them here.

still waiting for my new spec 4.1 so i snagged an old-spec gso 4.1 in m390 while i wait.

first impression is i like it better than the 4.7...much lighter and the handle contouring/overall size fits my hand better...can't wait to compare it to the new spec 4.1 and will probably only keep the one i like best out of the 3.

The GSO-4.1 Factory 2nds from October are on the bench getting their handles fitted to blades. We are on the home stretch for those orders!

Got my shipping notice today!!! Things are moving at Survive! (Of note, I posted this in another thread, but it makes more sense here. Sorry about the repost)

I so excited!
I received email just now from Survive! that my order has been shipped.
The mail did not specify which of my orders shipped (I have a couple more in the works) so I had to compare to my pending orders to to see what changed. It must be a 4.1 in CPM-20CV!
I've been looking forward to this as I think it will be a perfect utility and camp knife for me.

This is epic news for us on the forum and for our friends working in the shop and really everyone.

Congratulations, you guys.

Here's hoping the factory first starter orders aren't too far behind!

That email should reference your order number that you can check on the S!K website. You'll have to log in but it'll show you what you've ordered, the order number and what stage it's in.

There have been several posts about 2nd 4.1 in 20CV, but I haven't heard anything about any in 3V shipping.
