4.1 thread

Tr, I cant wait to get my Delta 3V 4.1 to compare to my M390 old spec. 4.1. Please do a comparison when you get your old spec back. The old spec, 4.1 is clearly my most carried GSO knife, and I sensed that the new spec. was an upgrade, so that is why I ordered it. That and I wanted it in 3V, little did I know it would be Delta 3V when ordering, WAHOOOOOO.

If course TR has the honor of reviewing the first new spec 4.1 and that is a big deal just because it's the new 4.1. This is also a big deal because it is the FIRST SURVIVE! DELTA 3V out in the wild! Woohoo!!!! :D

I'm not saying it would be a deal breaker, I'm just curious. I looks a lot closer in size than .32"

This is a very good observation. I was just trying get a feel for if it was something really important in your use of the knife or if you're just trying to get the facts straight!

I will compare to my original 4.1, but that will be a bit.

I do kinda feel stupid lucky to have been able to scoop this up. I have kicked myself for letting go of the wedding gift giveaway 4.7 CFV that I had (even though it went to another S!K fan). Lucking into another "first-ever" S!K knife is like hitting the lottery twice!

I don't know if this the right place for this, but I've got a 4.1 that I ordered in the Starter program last year....it's been so long that I've evolved out of wanting the knife. I still love SK!, it's just that I've moved into custom/handmade fixed. I'll paste the description from my confirmation email from October-2015: "GSO-4.1 (Preorder)
(Steel: CPM-20CV, Handles: Red Linen, Fasteners (see product description for updated information): Tumbled, Sheath: Spring Flat Dark Earth Kydex, Bow Drill Divot: No, Thank you, Ferro Notch: No, Thank you)
(This product is available for pre-order only)"

If anyone's interested in taking this order over, I'll pass it on to you now (PayPal only) for what I paid + $7 shipping & ship it to you when it gets to me (I just got the 1st Friday Production Update email & it says: "• The last of the GSO-4.1 materials are almost done being made." What does this mean...I do not know?!).

Just shoot me a PM if you're interested, & again, I apologize if there's a better place for this, I looked for an SK! Fleamarket & didn't find one.

Looks like I'm gonna try out some 20CV y'all !! Anything I need to know about this steel compared to 3V? I know it's not as tough but in a 4" knife is there a real possibility of me finding the limits of this steel?

Does anyone know when the 4.1 design changed?
I ask because when I ordered, I went off the technical specs indicated on the Survive! website which states the 4.1 has a blade length of 4.43" and the 4.7 has a blade length of 4.75". Those specs are still currently up on the Survive! website.
Just judging by the pictures, there is no way the current 4.1 is 4.43".

Can someone shed some light on this? TRfromMT just curious if you could take a quick measurement?

Tech. Specs on the web site are correct. 4 7/16" vs 4 3/4" for the 4.1 and 4.7 respectively. Photos below are taken with the end of the tape right at the sharp edge of the sharpening choil...

I can't imagine you'd be in any danger with normal knife use. Guy won't set us up for failure and if he offers 20cv in bigger models then I'd bet you're just fine. To back that statement up, whenever I decide if I like the 4.1 or 4.7 better, I'd like to double up and get another in 20cv and I have no worries about the steel.

Thanks for the measurements, TR!

Really, other than actually having this knife, your in depth write up is the next best thing!

That's what I figured. I'm excited to see how long it'll hold an edge since this will likely be a work carry and a deer processor for me. I'm also excited to have a blade that will basically never rust as I do a LOT of fishing and always have a fixed blade on my hip.

Very thorough review on this one bud!
McVeyMac beat me to the punch on wanting to see the new and old specs together.
I'm hoping that the weights are pretty similar between the two even though the new isn't a skeletonized tang.

That is awesome! Thank you again for the response.

It will vary depending on how you are measuring, from the handle or from the sharpening choil. Which we usually measure from the handle, so technically the website is wrong (until a few minutes from now when I head over there to update it). Guy double checked everything and we think the 7/16ths on his paper drawing got turned into a 9/16ths for the Solidworks renderings and actual production. It was just so small that Guy didn’t notice until it came up here.

Wouldn't this mean that the measurenents on the 4.7 are off as well? Assuming TRfromMT measured as he said from the choil on the 4.7. His picture shows a measurement of 4.75 from the choil.

Yeah, that's gonna be a hard call if/when both my 4.7 and 4.1 are in, and both in 3V. Might have to let the 4.7 go. Or give it to my wife or daughter. Or the 4.1.

I have always considered the old spec. 4.1 to be in a different class than the old spec. 5.1 certainly, and I even considered it to be in a different class than the GSO 5, the 4.7s predecessor. But with the thinner blade stock of the 4.7 compared to the 5, and looking at the comparison pictures of the new spec. 4.1 to the 4.7, these knives are quite similar. As I have said elsewhere, I never intended to get a 4.7 as I already have the old spec. 5. I just could not resist the CFV deal and caved. I think it will be informative to get the old spec. 4.1 and compare it with the 4.7 that is until one of us can make the direct old spec. new spec. comparison of the 4.1.

I posted this in another thread, but will add it here, i have it on good authority that sheaths for the new 4.1s will be arriving at the shop in a day or so

That doesn't mean that 4.1s will be shipping out this week, but it does suggest that S!K might actually BEAT the now regular 12-month time-frame of steel-being-cut to knife-in-hand on the 4.1s as well as the 2.7s!!! That would make ONLY the 4.7s laggards. Come on, S!K, start getting those 3.5s cut out!! :D

^^^ Can't wait to see some 4.1s out there - you guys are gonna love 'em (trust me!).

Plus I want my 2.7!!
