#44 Northwoods barlow.

The only thing to do is either send it to GEC for repair, or back to me for replacement. Either way, we have you covered and will cover shipping back.

Very sorry this got through.

Okay, just got the Madison. I love this thing, and will be doing a small review shortly, if anyone is interested. But, I had a couple questions with this knife.

Now, about right in the middle of the length of the blade on the edge, the knife is getting a good dent due to hitting the back spring when closing. When I look at the kick, it seems almost barely extrudes past the cutting edge, if any. And that causes the edge to hit the middle of the back spring in the raised section inside, and causing the dent. Its as if the kick needs to be a bit larger. I imagine sharpening it over time will get rid of this, but i don't really want to start removing steel so much already. I hope Im explaining this right. Is there anything I can do? Can the back spring be shaved a bit in the middle where it is raised?

Second, on the bolster, you can faintly see the pin for the pivot coming through. Its as if the pin and the bolster need to be just a small bit blended together better. I was thinking maybe polishing the bolster will blend it, but I don't want to hurt the knife at all, as its expensive, and I don't really have the tools to do a perfect job, unless I can get by with rubbing it with some metal polish or something like that, but I don't know if that will work. Again, anything I can do for this?

Thanks guys, I really REALLY love this knife.

Dave

I just got mine today. Light ebony. Fit and finish are flawless. I made a special request for a streaky piece of ebony and Derrick picked me out a beaut. I basically handed it over the wife to give to me as a valentine's present. Worked out pretty good....

So thanks again. I'll upload pics this weekend. Sheath was great too. I just ordered a differently second one actually (although I need to adjust my order),

Wonder. The backlock is also high carbon steel on these too right? So what effect would something like hot blurring have on the scales/pins and liners. The blade would look great with a glossy blues finish but I'm not sure the effect it has on the liners and pins given the high heat and caustic salts hit blurring uses. Love the pattern but hate high carbon steel since it rusts easily and you have to patina it which I think looks bad. Alternatively it would be nice if it was offered in some kind of a proper stainless. Doubt that's possible though since gec seem to only use 420hc.

You got it I will contact the office tomorrow. Thanks agin Derrick I really do love this knife.

I wish I could fix this myself honestly, the bone is just so nice I hate to give it back lol. Still trying to decide if i should send her for a repair, or an exchange....

Im stupidly kind of thinking this:
I can perhaps polish the bolsters by hand to blend the pin a bit better, as its not too bad
I can maybe, I read somewhere, with a peening hammer hit the kick a few times to "stretch it"

But, then again the tip is so close to catching my finger already, so I would probably have to also drop the point which I don't want to do really.

UUUhhhhh, frustrating to say the least. I may just have to wait for the repair, I love the bone on this one so bad.

Derrick, will you be able to provide some documentation as to the ivory source on these Madison Barlows when the need develops?

Speaking if the 44's (my favorite pocket knife right now) it looks like another batch is coming down the pipeline from GEC per their production schedule. Any details you can leak Derrick? My wallet is begging for mercy.

Hey...sorry I missed the questions earlier.

Documentation on the ivory? I can provide the documentation that I receive, but it is not sufficient for the new laws. (At least I am not willing to certify so).

The Clip point 44 looks superb. I told myself I wasn't buying anymore knives for a while but this one with the clip, it's going to be tough not to buy one.

I agree, I hope a version with a more economical cover material comes out though. Ivory is a little out of my price range. :o

That was very thoughtful of your wife. :p

If anyone has had any issues with the middle of the blade hitting the back spring I suggest calling GEC and then mailing it in. I did so and the knife came back perfect.

Although the model I sent in was not this 44, it's good to hear they fixed it right. Just sent one in today. How long did it take them to fix it?

I talked to Bill on the phone and he said that they should be able to fix it the day it comes in. I told him to take all the time needed to get it perfect. Got it back about 2 weeks later (I never called or emailed asking for a follow up btw)

Awesome, mine should be there today.

Anybody know if there's a possibility of the 44 frame being made with more affordable covers, maybe micarta?

Per GEC's productions schedule the new batch if 44's will be in elephant and mammoth ivory, ebony, and calico bone.

We did these primarily to do the ivory before the ban hits, so we did a very large number of them. I wanted to do it on a knife that could fully display its beauty. The ivory price went up substantially as the ban grew closer. I ordered the ivory for this when I first got wind of the possibility. So I got the ivory at the same price as before. These should be within a couple dollars as last time.

We do, however have a couple bone choices and a ebony.
