.45 cal pirate pistol/folder

If you get a chance to test fire it, it would make a great video or another pic thread.
Outstanding job, Bruce.

Oh! he did 3 times.... :D:D:D:thumbup:

I also finally got around to proofing the barrel. I know I know why didnt I do it before now? Because I knew it would pass the test, thats why. I used 138 grain lead ball with 24 grains of pyrodex powder and touched her off 3 times. The ususal load is 16 grains but I adjusted (by grinding off the spout) the powder measure down to 14 grain for a sweet shooter.

Wow, I love that pistol/folder!
Especilly in .45.

Wish I could afford it. How much they run, anyway?

Thanks JLT, mere pocket change for a Texan.:D
Email me if you really want to know. This one is east coast bound.

Thats really slick. Great work ! Did you ever figure how many hours you had in one of those ?

:D Yeah right.
I am getting better and therefore faster with the proceedures but re-invented everything is what really burns up hours. If I just had a blueprint to follow the machine work would be straight forward. I made this one entirely off of this first picture:

Its a far cry from a blueprint, instead its just a place to start. All the parts and pieces are roughed out and cut to size and shape with hopes that they will work together. If they dont I need to make another piece. Hours and hours of cutting, fitting, filing and cussing.:D

OK, Bruce, since this is getting old hat for you, it's time for an OTF auto/black powder Gatling pistol. :D :D ;)

Just kidding! That's awesome.

I especially like that you kept the blade lock mechanism external to the handle. I love the "stylish gizmo-ness" aspect of older mechanical devices and this hearkens back to the days of steam engines and pendulum clocks.

It's been a yearning of mine to make a .45 pistol like yours but with modern design style...
I have made a few cannons... but My issue is the barrel and the part where I DO NOT trust myself with making them... I asked the wrong questions before and I got the wrong answers... surprise surprise. So where does one just a .45 barrel like the one you have with all the work done to it (drilled and tapped for the breech plug and I love the idea of a musket nipple.) Last time I made one I nearly made a pipe bomb.
Send me a message if you can help me out.

Also where in Wallah wallah do you live? I have a cabin in Birch bay.

Bruce has his contact information on his website.

Just stunning Bruce!!

i dont know how you can let go of something after you have put that much love into it!

That lock looks great, I love it! The blade has the illusion of being longer than the handle, a very nice piece!

I can't believe this thread has eluded me for so long.

You Sir are quite the craftsman.

Thank you so much for sharing all the information and photos.

Wow, just WOW !

Great googly moogly, I knew this thing was gonna be cool, but I'm still stunned. I don't give a hoot it if doesn't get engraved at all, it's just... wow!

When this thread is finished I'll archive the whole thing and make myself a slideshow of all your great pics. ...This is truly fascinating. Thanks Bruce.

Heck of an idea, sir! If the forum supports it, it would be GREAT if you posted or linked a slideshow here, when it's all done.

There's so much to learn here, from so many different disciplines. Machining, design, engineering, the whole "it's a GUN that actually works" thing... yikes.

Well, apparently you had some kinda blueprint, or a reasonable working facsimile, in your head. Figuring out how to do an unusual project is the mark of creativity, and the pride of a craftsman. I believe I speak for many when I say, "We salute you."

Once again, I'm just floored, thanks so much Bruce, for sharing this with everyone :)

I think it's all been said already, but I really do get excited to see this thread at the top of the page. You are one hell of a craftsman.
