4th knife Stubby Frame Lock - WIP

cant wait to see it finished Tim.
I hope you intend to make more.
Australia needs more people making modern folders

Yeah, we'll have to see. The whole reason I started looking into making knives is because I wanted to buy the perfect folder but nothing quite hit the spot. It's going to be a long time before I can make MY perfect folder ;) but this one it a vast improvement on my last attempt.

Tiiiiiiiiiiiim, check out Chrisreeves.com and look at his folders. I had to opportunity to hold a Mnandi on Saturday and it is about the most perfect folder I've ever touch. Aside from that, he has several modern designs of folder, you might get some inspiration from seeing his knives. Interesting work with Titanium.

Probably true about being hyped. I don't know enough about the various makers to know. I did notice that on a $350 knife the grind line went 1/8" further down the spine on one side than the other. Still, amazing designs, very unique.

If you need any more Ti, let me know. I just picked up 8 more pieces.

I'm just about done now. The blade is all sanded up to 400 ready to send away to HT after Christmas. Thumb stud and lanyard hole are done too. Haven't fully decided on a finish yet but i think it will be all satin like it is now. I don't want to do a high polish finish because I made this for my Girlfriends little brother and who knows what he'll use it for, haha. I'll have to give it to him pre-HT and get it back off him to send away. Ooo i'll have to put a markers mark on it too.

Anyway, here's a bunch of photos of it in the back yard.

Open to other suggestions on how to finish the Ti if anyone's inspired.

Tim.

Came out better looking than I was expecting, congrats.

With just a tiny bit of tweaking, like getting the screws a little further in, and possibly adding at least one more near the back, you could have a real neat design there.

Is your detent hidden?
Kinda looks like the lock is just scuffing the blade and there is nothing keeping the bugger closed.

Bold move fitting the lock pre-heat treat.
Don't touch either the lock face or the spot where the stop pin hits post HT or you'll be sorry!!!

Right on all accounts Brian. If by hidden you mean non-existent? Then yes, the detent is hidden. haha. I was kinda hoping that would just get forgotten. Because of my poorly thought out design i didn't have anywhere to put it. At least i couldn't see anywhere is wouldn't interfere. I'm still open to suggestions on that, it wont be HT for a while. I could still put an extra screw in the back too but it seemed nice and rigid. The pivot is tight enough that the blades not going to just flop open though.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions,
Tim.

Well, if your lock doesn't fall off the blade, you gotta be able to fit a small ball in the part that rides on the blade the whole time...

The standard is .0625" or about 1.6mm...
You do need about .5mm of ti around it though...

I just checked, if it's truly 2mm, you can do it.
You can even put a 2mm ball in and still have enough meat, though a bit smaller like the 1/16" is better.

You see, part of the ball can hang over the edge of the blade.
Only the center has to have contact the whole time...

Tim! That is really shaping up nicely:thumbup:

Take Brian's advice and get a detent installed somehow and you've got a really nice knife there! Way to go, you've been working hard on this project and it shows.

Still, you need the detent ball. Even if it is only on the detent until it's half open, it's better than nothing. There is ALWAYS a portion of open where the detent ball doesn't contact the blade.

Now, when you get it done you can send it to me and I'll trade you for more Titanium, hehehe. Great looking knife. Do YOU like the Ti instead of the Stainless you were using?

Heck of a good job Tim.Keep at it.
Stan

Thanks Stan!

#53 drill and a 1/16" detent ball! Looks like you got room there no problem

I'll look into it.

Ha ha, sorry zaph it's already destined for someone else. I did enjoy working with the Ti after the initial cutting out with the angle grinder and cutting the lock into such a thick piece was a bit annoying.
