5” Blade Spyderco Police Model!!

Easier said than done.

Besides, they are very different knives. Police is slim and light. Tatanka is wide and chunky.

Spyderco Police 4 models come with four carry positions. So in theory this knife will allow tip down (and at its size, it really should). Thus, I, too, am at attention on this one.

True but they will still have to make a 5" Police bigger in size & weight than the 4" version & I do not think that bodes well for the model. 🤷‍♂️

Police is supposed to be slim and light. It stands to reason a larger one will be a little less slim and light than the smaller one, but still a slim and light knife for its size. I don't see a problem.

If they ever produce it, we'll see . . .

but if 5" was a "good" size for a folder, there already would be a lot more of them but there aren't. 🤷‍♂️

That is a hasty generalization mixed with appeal to absence of evidence. Such an argument works better if there is in fact a lack of evidence, but Cold Steel provides more than sufficient to indicate that whether a large folder is "good" or not, it is at least desired by a significant enough portion of the knife community to warrant the project. In the OP Sal is quoted as saying it's an experiment he wanted to try, which suggests this is a passion project geared toward like minded afficionados.

I, for one, would very much like to see another "megafolder" come into being, that has the most excellent opening mechanism of them all, the Spydie hole.

The Tatanka was designed with/for the Power lock. It was deliberately beefy and heavy. Frankly, you could grind off half of the blade and still have a good knife, just not as good a crowbar. Scaling up the 4 3/8" P4 to 5" would not require thicker blade stock or wider blade. Making it into a folding crowbar would, but not making a longer cutting tool. My Tatanka never gets carried because I live too far from water to need a boat anchor.

I’m interested in seeing this come about.
The end price would be a deciding factor for me.
If it’s reasonable I’m happy to add my 2cents to this knife.
Another idea presented was identifying this knife the C O P . Which is a really good idea imo.

Two different knives completely with the Tatanka DOUBLE the weight! While we’re not sure of the end handle material of the proposed C.O.P (5” Police) Sal mentioned that it probably won’t be FRN as two different molds would be expensive! The new model will be slim, lightweight (most likely 4.9 -5.2 ounces) , thin blade stock with FFG , And 4 position clip.

I should add; I’m in unless it’s only offered in VG10 or S30V. We need a spicier steel for a blade that big!

I’d take either of those, or 8Cr13MoV. Or you know whatever “better” steel they want to offer it in. 🤷

If it's made, I sure they'll try to keep the slim profile & the weight down but, if they raise the thickness of the blade for strength & durability, they'll probably come in closer to 5.5-6 oz & the length of the knife closed will still be too long for most front pockets.

There will always be a small niche market for 5" folders like the Tatanka, as well as those that Cold Steel & others sell, but IMO it will NEVER be popular in the market at large, as is the case now.

Of course, Spyderco has never shied away from making & selling odd, off-beat blades but, if they make a 5" Police, I seriously doubt they plan to mass market it & it almost surely will go the way of the Tatanka -- get discontinued & then held mostly by collectors who will never use them. 🤷

In any event, it will be interesting to see what, if anything, comes of this.

A likely scenario. But at least I’ll have a shot at one.

Hey did you know the Recon 1 XL was brought back by popular (enough) demand…

I've actually been itching for another megafolder for a while now (ended up parting with all the ones I have owned either for monetary or feasibility reasons). I keep looking at the Cold Steel Voyager because it's affordable, and a solid dependable knife at a decent weight to size ratio, but I hate the look of the thing. That "iron cross" texture is so gaudy, and that handle profile! The 1970s called and they want their Cadillac back.

The Hold Out I would be an option, but I hate the lack of tip down carry, and the lack of an opening hole, plus I would have to cut at least an inch off the blade (and handle.... which is where the pocket clip holes are) before I would be able to bring myself to carry it. So it's out.

This might be the answer to my desires.

DA170 DA170 what is the acronym COP supposed to stand for?

C.O.P. Chief OF Police is the intended meaning.

I, for one, am glad Spyderco still is willing to make knives that don’t appeal to everyone. Two of my favorites are the Harpy and Kiwi - acquired tastes for many. I carried an OG Police, as the Police, in the 1990s when they were newer and at the time they were not mainstream either. Fully serrated blade? What? Fit great in a sap pocket though.
A classic or good design doesn’t always have to be a top 5 seller to be worth making.

Reviewed the Police 4 model again, and I remember it has the just-right-for-Sal's-hand handle design. Which sadly doesn't work for me, and I have eventually parted ways with every knife like that, even after attempts to mod to my preferences. So I know, upon reflection, that I'd pass on the Police on the left. If they made the one on the right (or the 5" blade analog thereof), I'd buy two or more, and it would replace my modded Resiliences as my main EDC folders.

That's probably my most carried EDC; always thought it was the perfect pocket Bowie... liked it so much, and feared it being discontinued so much, I had to buy 2... haven't ever even had to open the backup.

Wow, those new Recon XLs cost $275; I bought my pair on clearance from KC for $79.95 apiece with free shipping in 2017... and at the time I thought I was splurging. 🤦‍♂️
