5160 johndeere shaft steel update.

up date guys :(

I got a quote on shipping by truck today,
it was thought to be less and I put my foot in my mouth I think.
the trucking company now wants 700.00 to ship 500 lb's that was a surprise for sure. from $200.00 to $700.00
there's no way that's going to happen.
I'm looking for other alternatives .
the new problem I'm facing... most the shafts as I said now are 21"
at 21" they are too long for any of the flat rate boxes,
this means they will have to cut each one to fit if shipping that way.
at this point I don't know if they will do that for the same price quoted?
if they will and it goes flat rate I will want them to be insured just because of the problems with shipping by USPS I don't won't to get stuck paying for steel I don't get..

2nd option is to ship to me in 70 pound increments
( their max weigh any way they ship)
for $30.00 for each package because it now is not flat rate because of them being shipped at 21". but still close to the high quote other than insureance.

now knowing
I already built in some shipping based on the shorter stock first thought to be, at the thought higher price that was why the $2.00 to $2.50 quote.
I do not want this to go over the price I told you guy's
cure?...
she is going to see the postal department for costs Monday, going in thinking flat rate..
and with out me mentioning the length problem I'm hoping she will offer to cut the pieces free :) sneaky aye .. :( well I hope it works.. that way I won't have to cut it here.
if I end up getting them in the 21" state I can cut them here so they can be shipped to you in the flat rate boxes still costing you nothing extra :)
so hopefully I built in enough shipping combined with them maybe cutting them at no cost, or maybe they'll come up with a brake in price on it because of the discrepancy of the lengths first told to me,

sorry for jumping the gun and telling you guys before this thing was settled :o

I sure wished they told me the correct length in the first place,, it would have saved a lot of typing and embarrassment if this don't go now..
I'll let you guys know what happens... I hope I didn't get you guys excited for nothing..I'm like a bull dog though,, it's not over until it's over :grumpy:

I may have done it again ... yaking before knowing monday
I know I got a big mouth...

Look at it this way - if she can ship it to you in a dozen or so flat-rate boxes, you can probably just turn around and re-ship the same package - nice for those of us interested in a whole box, and less work for you.

arf, arf!

:D

OK
to answer the where is it coming from? ...
I don't like secrets any more than any of you do..
but this one for the time can save you money..

this steel is one that I consider a commodity to knife makers and retailers,

The very Steel that Ed Fowler uses at this price WOW  ..
if they can get their hands on it, the price of it will go out of site. I'm sure of that..
retailers have to add as much as 100% to the stock to keep afloat..

who else can get this JD control shaft steel at this price  right now pending shipping and I still think I will hold that price ..one way or the other .
that's still less than you can buy the reg 5160 this is a big plus to us as I see it.

if someone finds out where I'm getting it they would have to pay more for it, to get it for the deal I have with the
outfit I'm working with
and the price would go up just for that fact alone plus the mark up..

I want to be able to give a good price on it and keep it that way....and spread it out to you guys

If I get to much of it and can't sell it here then I would consider selling it to a retailer but I want you guys to be able to get it at a good price.. cutting the middle mEn out.
so I'm protecting the info right now to protect the price. I hope you understand that for now..it gets more in depth
but it's the easyist way for me to exsplain it in type..

:D
makes sense, if not for it being 21" it won't go Flat rate :(
13 5/8" is the max in the flatter box of the two, I have here..

I'm hoping they will cut it free..then there will be no problems :)
then I can do it the way you mention too :) ..

Thanks for your work on this Dan, I for one apreciate it, stick with it you'll get it beat yet.

Dan:
Thanks for all your work, when you get into the big outfits it can get tough. You might talk to Shane Justice, he has been fighting a real battle trying to ship Texaco Type A, as it is he is losing money but getting it figured out. They can hassel you no end, but somewhere there is a solution. We have been pretty successful working with small guys and there are always other outfits who haul bulk, if you can find someone who needs to fill a back haul on their own time so to speak you can come up with good deals that work out for all.
The big thing is "(Stick With It")!

it's a long haul but I have one more thing up my sleave if all else fails..
I'm in it up to my chin now,, so I'm not backing out yet ..
in the long run, the little guy will make it (if we don't quit),,
we are the foundation of our world. :D

thanks Will and the rest :)

Hey Dan,

I really like what you're trying to do here. It reminds me of my quest for Texaco type A a couple of years ago. That was almost as much fun as it sounds like you're having.

I want to offer my assistance, if I can be of any. I have several contacts as I used to work in the shipping industry. If you want, you can email me some shipping info and I'll see what I can do. I'm not guaranteeing anything but I'll give it my best. Can your supplier palletize the steel? I'll need total shipping weight, pallet dimensions, ship-to and ship-from zip codes to get started. With a little luck we may be in business. Email me at BaumKnives@msn.com or at my work email Rick_Baum@moduslink.com and I'll see what I can do. All info will be kept confidential.

Rick

Thanks Rick
I'll do that if needed
I got a hold of a buddy that drives and he's hooked me up with his outfit that may be just the answer.
should know Monday..
the problem is no one wants to ship to Maine, so I have to find a Maine based truck that ships out there.. and this one does, all the way to CA.
coast to coast.. they just opened this up and I may just catch them
know one wants to dead head a trip.. :)
hell I may take the trip myself and write it off :D
I can do that you know :D and make some knife related stops on the way too.. :D I can drop some off to you guys on the way back :D

I Just got word that it's on it's way to me as of yesterday :D
now if the shipping along the way doesn't screw up, am a pessimist , can you tell :)

I am down at Ed's shop this week. We would like to get fifty to a hundred pounds of this from you. There is one condition, I want a copy of the picture that you got from Danbo. Please e-mail and let us know what and where.

ps. There is a student here that will take fifty pounds also.

Bill Burke
Bill what's your e-mail addy or do you want me to use Ed's? we got steel :)

Hello Dan:
I just received my steel yesterday. The post office box was really beaten up, since you insured the steel, they did all the paper work for a claim!! I haven't opened the box yet just because my shoulder won't let me fool with it yet, I will check the steel for damage. (smile)
Should have some of it forged up soon, an apprentice, Jeff Davidson from Haltom City Texas, is here now and we will get started and report our results.
I sincerely appreciate your getting this steel available.

Dan, I can't imagine all the effort you have put into this thing. Even if you make something on it, it sure won't cover your shop time costs. Thanks for doing this.
