710 being Discontinued

Truly special boys!! The knife is one of those that when I pick it up I immediately remember the day they gave it to me!

You need a user for sure, Joe. My original 710 was a mess when I got it and I've put a lot into bringing it back. It's my user, though, and I was glad to be able to find one damn near LNIB at a good price to keep nice. Definitely get one to beat on, man, coz those knives are real workers!

I've still got my eye out for a 710BK plain edge and a comparable 705. I picked up a nice clean 710BK last year and gave it to Son#2 for Christmas back then, so when I found a 705BT user I passed that along to make a pair for him.

My favorite 710 came into life as a D2BK version, and the BK failed within six months of use. I stripped the coating by hand as much as I could still leaving the script which was deeply etched. Sent to Benchmade for a full service and wound up giving it to one of my patients for this past Christmas as a gift. Here 'twas...:D

Merry Christmas Mark!

Wow...that's a shocker! It's such a great design- been carrying mine all week.

From a business perspective, there is no reason to discontinue 710. I would be willing to bet that some variants in handle material and/or blade steel will be introduced. Still, the D2 version at $120 is worth to grab before it is long gone.

The Rift, the Shori, the Loco and the Mini Barrage are discontinued too

Seems like the Loco was an evolution of the Rift but it clearly did not sell well.
I'm surprised the Rift was never updated with skeletonized liners. Give it M390 steel, a Loco style opening hole and different colored G-10 and you've got a winner, IMO. Although I still wouldn't like the placement of the horn on the handle because it forces me to grip the handle further back than I'd like or my pinky lands right on it.

I traded my Loco for a much smaller Alias 2 and couldn't be happier...it's my favorite EDC knife. With So many discontinued I'm curious to know what they Will be offering. Yeah another vote for a 710 in a different blade steel~!

Maybe you're right. I suppose they could announce the discontinuation to create demand for the stock at hand and heighten anticipation for the new models. With the other discontinuations, though, maybe they're just thinning the herd as BM has a long history of taking models out of production.

Edit: Of course if they came out with an M390 CF version, I'd be all over it in a minute.

The way I read the KW site only the Black handle Rift (satin & coated blades) and satin serrated Loco are being disco'd. The other version's aren't.

That's my read anyway.

I just seen today on Fb the 710 was being discontinued. Was kind of surprised. Was just looking at them a few weeks ago online and was considering to pick one up down the road. Down the road might need to be sooner.

I would recommend picking one up!!! Fantastic knife!! I have 2 and they are awesome!!
If you're serious about getting one, check out the Knifeworks exclusive with M390 and blue/black G10 scales.......amazing knife at a good price!
Joe

Thanks for the heads up. I'll check it out. I was just looking at the standard and didn't even know about the other ones. I'll have to look into m390, I know nothing about it.

Wow. The 710 is such a classic. One of the finest looking folding knives ever. Sad to see it go. Hope it gets reincarnated :)

And your source for this is...? Benchmade listed the discontinued models well over a month ago, and the 950 Rift is not on the list. Not only that, but at least one Benchmade employee (the one who manages the benchmadeforum) has stated that the Rift is not discotinued.

It would be a shame if the Rift is on the list. What a great knife it is!
I grabbed the Cutlery Shoppe Exclusive and it has blown me away!
The build on this one is literally amazing!

The 950-1 is being discontinued (black handle).

IMHO 710 will come back with better steel, new scales, and maybe with standoffs in regular version.
