710 being Discontinued

I'm probably one of the few if not only person n the world that doesn't care for open back and standoffs. I much more prefer knives with closed backs. I was looking at the custom Grips on the Benchmade site and the open back on the g10 tan is what turned me off.

Problem is that in 710 edge was very often striking that derlin backspacer.

I've been a knife user and hoarder for maybe 30 years, and for much of that time the 710 has stood out as an iconic, flagship of the Benchmade brand. So before its too late, I ordered another just to keep in my growing pile of backup knives. I'll never use the vast majority of them, but it makes me feel good to have them on the shelf.

Maybe Benchmade is pulling a Coke scam, like when Coke got rid of the original flavor in 2002 just to drum up support for it, then magically reintroduced it after "New Coke" failed.

and here i thought this might be the year we got a 710 in s90v or even s110v...

I have a feeling that's what we're going to see with LE's in the future. Not unlike with the AFCK. Hope so anyway...

This is like Buck discontinuing the 110. Just insane.

____

I felt that way when they disco'd the AFCK. Besides the Bali's it's what put BM on the map as far as modern tactical folders. I stopped trying to figure out a long time ago why they dico some models and not others.

Best guess is they just aren't selling as they used to, or enough to justify keeping them in production. Sad to see it go just the same. Like I said, hope to maybe see some LE's in the future though.

Interesting im actually selling my 710-1401. Clearing all my production so to speak. Got sooooo hooked on frame locks that i cant find anything else in my hand. I am of course holding onto my summer piece that i would take with me when im wearing shorts. In case u were wondering of course it would be my 940-1. Loveeee the CF and S90V and super light weight

I just went over to Knifeworks to have a look at the 710 Gold Class that an earlier poster had mentioned. I knew it was out of stock (having been limited to 200 pieces), out of my price-range (for a BM), and not up my alley anyway.

Even though I own 3 710s (2 D2s and a -1401) I've been so tempted to buy another D2 at $120, but have resisted. What I did just buy was a 710BKS in D2 at $129. I"m not big into serrations, though I have a few. Mostly, I just needed an excuse to have another version of one of my most beloved knives. I'll keep watching the Exchange for other steels and versions as I can't get enough of the old-school Benchmades.

It's been years since I've had one, but the recent discontinuation has given me the urge to pick one up. Are the edges generally pretty sharp on them these days? I had one of the M2 models, and it was a bear to get it sharp.

My most recent 710 purchase was the KW Exclusive, and it came with a beautifully even, screaming sharp edge!!

I was a big fan of the 806 when it was a liner lock. I'd like to see both the 806 and the 710 as liner lock models. Benchmade made liner locks so well it was crazy! No other liner lock I've owned was as good as the AFCK and the Stryker. Imagine a 710, 806, and 910 in liner lock glory!

I'm a big fan of the AXIS lock, but know what you mean about the old Benchmade liner lock knives. I've been looking for the Stryker LL model and also have an AFCK 800 that is one of the most stupidly smooth knives I own. Only the very fine jumping on the lock-bar release stands a few thousandths above the cut-out and it disengages effortlessly.

When I heard the news I bought another spare just in case.
I've EDC'd a 710 in one form or another for well over 10 years and I always seem to go back to them after the honeymoon period with my latest and greatest knife wears off. So sad to see them go.

Wasn't the 710 Benchmade's first axis lock knife?

Based on recent market decisions and the current general direction of the company, I doubt it.

I would like to see 710, 806 and other iconic models with modern steels like S110V, 10V, M4 and so on.
710 model is one of the best knives made ever, so why not to make upgrades? Look at Spyderco's Military model. This classic knife is reborn every year after steel upgrade.

Agree. Benchmade made only limited efforts to develop the 710. Initially in ATS-34, they switched early on to 154CM, which is essentially the same. There were some years with the superb M2, but that was discontinued years ago. The main product changed from 154CM to D2, where it's been for many years now. Offerings in M4 and M390 have been limited to dealer limited offerings. I bought one of the first production 710s after reading Doug Ritter's 1998 review of the knife and still have that one, as well as a number of others. Sad to see this iconic and excellent design go out of regular production.
