710 being Discontinued

Her´s some 710-porn for you!

Sigh...the 710HS back into the 90's was my first Benchmade. With a great blade, ergonomics, and easy to pocket, this knife still sets the standard. Among the Big three, the 710, 800 AFCK, 910, anything from that era would be more than enough to equip anyone properly.

I've had my 710 a few days. Each day I seem to like it more and more.

Dang, this marks the end of an era. I'll never forget receiving my 710 back in '99 and anxiously awaiting the arrival of the 705. The two accompanied me on a jaunt across Europe soon after, with the 705 actually riding in-pocket on the flights. Ah, those were the days.

The Axis lock still amazes me as much today as it did back then.

Basically the same, but I think my 710 was late '98. I bought a satin PE 705 specifically to be unthreatening to airport staff. Different world. :-/

Those were the halycon days for Benchmade. Admittedly my perception is partially colored by my own personal history. But I do think that Benchmade has done very little innovating over the past 15+ years while companies like Spyderco look very different now.

I agree with that. Fortunately the basic BM DNA is very good, but there hasn't been a lot of innovation. The only thing that leaps to mind was the Axis flipper concept, which I don't think really caught on.

The DNA reference is a good one and true for me as well. Innovation may include the new 781, but so many of the other newly offered models look like makeovers. The 710 did have a long lifecycle didn't it? How many are in play around the globe as I write this?

The Axis flipper.......dud.
The other innovation I can think of is the lock on the 665......I have one and really like it, but it was not a block busting seller and I believe is being discoed also.

Received my first 710 today. Just a beautiful blade shape, and what a well balanced knife, and very comfortable in the hand. Much more pleasant than a Military or PM2, and I'm a Spydie fan. This is a larger knife than I usually carry, certainly more than I need around the office, but I think it's going to see some pocket time.

I haven't gotten to handle one yet but I did place my order at Knifeworks today. Its a knife I've always wanted to get but I figured it would be around forever. I hope next year they don't cancel the 940 but I already got one of those.

Really nice one SF.....tons of blue!!
Must've said this a thousand times........but the -1401 is absolutely amazing!! Awesome steel on a beautiful blade shape......with an Axis lock!! What more can you ask for???
Maybe custom scales???

Love it!!! Thanks guys!!

Benchmade is spot on with their heat treat on the D2 and it mirrored up just beautiful, I'm old school and I think D2 on 710 is just the best old school combo that will give modern super steel a run for their money.

Well, I decided to go ahead and order the KW 710-1401 before they're gone. I still have my 710 combo in ATS34 my Mom gave me in 1999, a great knife and has meaning!
