710 being Discontinued

I've had a handful of 710's over the years. Never could seem to keep one in my collection. Always sold it or traded it to fund new/interesting steels and designs that I hadn't tried before. There was always the thought that "I could always buy another one."

Grabbed one off of KW. Hopefully, for good.

Just got my 710 in from Knifeworks, and my goodness I forgot how much I loved this knife. It was a toss-up between rebuying this or rebuying the full size Ritter Grip, and I'm glad I went with this one. It's large, but it also takes up much less space in the pocket. It's a little thicker than my custom Mini Grip, but it's about the same height. It also came very sharp, with just the slightest burr. A few swipes on a fine ceramic rod took care of that. About the only nitpick I can come up with is the tip isn't evenly ground. But, it's very pointy, which is more important to me, and it wouldn't take much to correct it. Honestly, I would have paid the original asking price for one of these. It's a bargain at the current closeout price.

I'm hoping that I might be able to get a second one before they're impossible to find everywhere.

That's the brilliance of the 710, It's a large knife that carries small. It's also light and thin sacrificing nothing in terms of strength.

Fantastic knife indeed!

Right on target. I was carrying an Ares (730) today and was really struck by the difference between it and the 710, especially blade:handle ratio. The Ares is a great knife, no mistake, but the 710 is just brilliant.

I've been waiting for a new 710 -or a handle change on the KW exclusive before I bought a backup. Looks like neither is coming. So now it's down to either D2 or blue/black...

Though decision, I know. I'd get the 710-1401 KW exclusive for now. I figure when their both gone the 710D2 will be easier to get later from the secondary market. I mean, ultimately you have to have both!:)

Yeah, I think you're right. I messed up and sold one I already had last year. :grumpy:

I'm saddened by the news of the infamous 710 (and 707) being discontinued. I thought these two would be part of the BM lineup forever.

Benchmade , you are officially dead to me.

On their site KW say's that the 710-1401 exclusive is discontinued also. That when their gone their gone. I'd get one while you still can. It's an exceptional knife!
Thanks for the heads up. I've been hem-hawing about picking one up and now I did.

Forgive the shitty ipod camera work.

I went to the PO yesterday and picked up the 710sBK I mentioned ordering from Knifeworks on the preceding page. I've wanted a black-bladed one for a while and, although I'm not the biggest fan of serrations, I really like this one. At the close-out price of $129 with free shipping how can you go wrong? This makes 4 710s for me.

With all the talk one hears about poor centering, blade play, poor sharpening, etc from Benchmade, this one couldn't have been any closer to perfect right out of the box. Not the slightest hint of play, flies out, and free-drops closed. Nice sharp edge and dead-balls centered, too. I'm keeping this one stock, as there's just something so classic and appealing about the 710. Maybe I'll have to get another one to customize. ;)

Benchmade is spot on with their heat treat on the D2 and it mirrored up just beautiful, I'm old school and I think D2 on 710 is just the best old school combo that will give modern super steel a run for their money.

I would have bought one of those too, but they were out. I did get the plain edge, non-coated flavor. The partially serrated, black version (SBK) is still out there, but at $35 more than you paid. I think I "need" one, because I will regret it when they disappear if I haven't grabbed one.

Beautiful edge, man. I spent a lot of time on my first 710's edge. I had gotten it used and very poorly sharpened and just had the Sharpmaker at the time. After three sessions it's well-sharpened but nothing close to yours. I've had my EdgePro for a while now and even have the re-curve hones. I can see I'll be spending some time this weekend getting mine to look like yours.

Yeah, I went back to Knifeworks to double-check my price before my post and saw the SBKs were gone. Felt a little sad and started looking around to see if there were any left elsewhere. It's not my money, but I'd definitely grab one if I were you.

I just went through my collection the other day, counted twenty-one Benchmades among my knives, and there's not one there that I'm not really pleased to own. After this latest round of discontinuations, thirteen of them are not made anymore. Between that and the really meh new releases for this year I'm just so disappointed in what has always been one of my favorite knife makers.:grumpy::confused:

Ya know Steve.....I didn't put a number to the amount of BMs in my small collection, prob around 20, and after fondling each one of them I don't see one that I would sell. Or one that has an issue. All centered with no play and all are smooth.
I'm also disappointed with most of the new stuff, except the Ti one, but not paying >$400 for it.
Gonna be on the look out for some older BMs.
Joe

I ordered one (black blade, partially serrated) off of a gigantic internet vendor for $165. The $36 premium I paid (over what you paid) will fade out of my memory, but the knife that I hoard as a safe queen will live on for my wife's next husband to inherit.

I'm the same way right now, but probably a bit worse.... Last year, I pared down my Benchmade collection to just what I really like and use, and ended up with these: http://i.imgur.com/k3HCOr3.jpg (picture; not gonna embed because it's not totally ontopic in this thread). There's also a 525BK-1101 (CPM-M4 version) that missed the pic and a 710-1401 that's been added since.

Now, going into 2017... No 806, no 710, no 730, no 615, no 908, no 586, no 707, no 525. The 62 and 581 are still hanging around.

And honestly, I don't really see any of the new 2017 models really making the jump into my collection.

"Disappointed" is about how I'm feeling, too.
