#78 American Jack

What is it about the hot dog shield that people dislike so? It is FAR from my least favorite. I'd prefer no shield on a lot of knives, but I'd certainly prefer something simple like the hot dog shield over the bollocks or cloud or unxld shield.

I think my only real objection to it is that it is simply referred to as the "hotdog" shield. If it was called a bar shield, which it technically is, at least a variation of such, I would have no issue with it.

That being said, I do think it tends to be overused, almost as if it is the standby or go to shield for the Tidioute line...

B B.F.U I’m not a hater. I was just making fun. But in answer to your question.. I think it’s boring. If your going to have a shape like that, I would rather have a square corner bar.
In reality it is way at the bottom of my importance list for skipjoints.

It's refreshing to see a largely renewed interest in non-blackwood wood covers. Although this run of #78s is uninspiring to me, I hope 2018 continues with more ironwood, bocote, bubinga, osage, rosewood, walnut, etc.

Now that you mention it I do not really know why I don't like the Hot Dog shield, but, I don't. I do however like some of the other less favorable shields, like the cloud/ key hole, UNXLD, Tidioute, and would love to get a knife with a "bollocks" shield. This run though does have some really nice shields, particularly liking the Spear shield.

I don't like it... I'm hoping for hamburger or corndog shields in 2018 as I prefer hamburgers

Really not worth debating too much. Sellers can sell however they want, and buyers can buy however they want. There are more than enough options.

Personally, I will always choose to see what I am buying in advance if I can. But others prefer to be surprised. To each his own, and there are pros and cons to each method. For example, by the time I was able to pick this Ironwood, many better ones had been scooped up. If they were just mailed out blindly, maybe I would have gotten an even better one or maybe I would have got an extremely poor example. But would they really be mailed out blindly or would favorite buyers be rewarded?

When it is all said and done, I would prefer to have some little bit of control.
Show side looks good

Both classics!

I love the acrylic on that French Kate. What do they call that?

They called it "Red Slipper". Not very creative, but it is a pretty cover.

Very classy. I don’t think I have ever seen ebony, the cloud shield, and a long pull all on the same GEC View attachment 817245
Not very common to see ebony in the Northfield line, not unheard of either, but it is usually a Tidioute handle. I traded mine off long ago, but this was a nice 72.

Sidenote, and only for knerds, what good fun looking through the annual pics over at GEC's site. They actually did a few 53 muskrats with 2 diamond shields.

If memory serves me, those muskrats had diamondwood covers and sat on shelves for about a year!
