Yes I agree the best patina I've seen yet. I see you used a grapefruit for this. Can you give some exacting details on how you did this, including stripping, when you have a chance? All the patinas I have seen were just ok and I never wanted to try this. You have me wanting to try this. Thanks....

Ace hardware extra strength stripper for 30min (coating will just fall right off the blade)
clean very well with gray scouring pad and dishsoap. dry knife thouroughly!
Slice up some grapefruit and lay it out on a cutting board, put the knife on the slices, then put slices over the top of knife, I then use a cookie sheet with a 20lb weight on top to compress it all down for good contact of the grapefruit, wait 4-5 hours and voila! cool patina.

Wow nice patinas! I'll have to try that with my ESEE's when the coatings get too worn. Thanks for posting instructions too.

That is frickin' sweet! I've got a 4 that is next to get stripped, so I will be trying that for sure! Thanks for sharing, awesome method and great results.

OK so after you have your patina established, do you coat the blade with anything to preserve it?

I agree with everyone else. VERY cool patina. Love the texture that the grapefruit left.

Nope, the patina preserves itself. Under normal knife use a patina will stay on it, but under abnormal use (normal to most of us :D) like prying, battoning, chopping, etc.... the patina will fade or slightly wear off, battoning alot will fade the patina quick but then once it fades enough you can just scrub the blade with a scouring pad and dishsoap or steel wool and re-patina it.

I still oil it occasionally with a silicone soaked gun cloth though, even more corrosion protection plus it will make the patina appear a little darker.

Yeah, I have heard that when you use an acid-base to make a patina that it is good to put a base-base on it to stop the pH levels from staying high and continuing to eat at the material.

That is incredible!
BTW, what paracord and wrap are you using on your HEST?
The combo is sweet.

Sweet (pun intended)! I'm gonna try that with my stripped Izzy this weekend. . . .

When you are putting the grapefruit slices together on the cutting board and knife, cut the ends off the slices so they are flat and fit together good if that makes sense. Also try to play with the position of the center portion of the slice on the metal for the pattern you want. Once you have it all set up and compressed with a weight do not touch it for at least 3-5 hours or you will mess up the pattern.

550 7 strand cord, woodland camo and black, interwoven 2 strands of alternating color at a time. Hest is really easy to wrap with the handle it has and all those handy holes in it :). OD green and coyote brown look really good in a two tone wrap as well.

THERE YOU GOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! Those look mad sexy! I like the ending looks of those. I may have to try that...

Man that looks sick! Can you give a quick shot on what steel's need this, or can have it done? Again looks amazing!
