That is the first Patina that I have really liked. It looks great. It reminds me of the decorative paper you can make where you get the oil based color to float on the surface of water and lay the paper down on top of it to make a similar pattern. Thanks for sharing your methods!

I tried this out on an old machete I had laying around. It turned out ok on one side and bad on the other. Figured out you need to slice the grapefruit horizontally. The pattern turns out a lot nicer. Also mine did not come out as dark as yours, but I don't know the steel of the machete so maybe that makes a difference.

Steel type is important. Did u use the weights on top of a cookie sheet to squish it down? Cuz that is also important. How long did u let it sit for? Depending on the steel mabey you need to let it sit longer, the longer it sits the darker it gets but if it sits too long it could get some rust spots, but are easily removed with a sponge and soap if not too bad. What is the finish like on the machete? Smooth or roughed up? I have experimented for years with patinas to find one that turns out really impresive. You might just have to experiment with the finish of the blade and imersion time on that machete. And find out the steel type too.

Ace hardware extra strength stripper.
clean very well with gray scouring pad and dishsoap.
Slice up some grapefruit and lay it out on a cutting board, put the knife on the slices, then put slices over the top of knife, I then use a cookie sheet with a 20lb weight on top to compress it all down for good contact of the grapefruit, wait 4-5 hours and voila! cool patina.

To be fair and honest I have to admit it..... I'm stealing this immediately! Looks awesome!

Now that I've said that and had time to think about it the knife I want to do this on is ATS-35, anyone know if the properties of that knife lends itself to this sort of patina?

Ive never heard of ats35? If you mean ats34, no it will not work well. It has to be done on a non stainless steel hc knife and if its ats34 that is a stainless steel.

I weighted it down, I let it sit overnight too. The machete is just a cheap $5 one. I thrashed on it yesterday, and it's scraped up, but it still looks ok. I'll get some pics soon. Thanks for the cool tip with the grape fruit

If u redu it try to rough up the blade more with a corse scotch pad or steel wool. If it didnt get any rust through the project let it sit even longer. If that doent work, the steel might have some stainless qualitys.

man those are some smoken blades .... Awesome job !!

I really, really, really, really, really like that hest..

really I do..:p

Well safe to say you have the best looking patinas by far. Can you do us a favor when you have time and explain the following:

1) Does it matter what kind of grapefruit? White or Pink?

2)I'm not exactly sure how to slice this grapefruit to get that cool design. A pix of how your slicing it, and how the knife lays between the slices would be fantastic.

Thanks!

I used red grapefruit. As for the slicing, must be done across the main stem thing that goes through the middle of the fruit, so when sliced the whiteish stem thing will ne in the middle of the slice. Also cut the slices flat on the end so they fit together nice.

Thanks! Makes me want to tackle my month old ESEE 5, very cool. More pics from everyone...I'd love to see more knives patinas done in like this...

I was thinkin of doin my 5 and 6 next but they still have an adequite amount of coating left on em, but I may do it anyway.

The 5 would look incredible with that dark smokey patina! Do it up and take pics! Mine is also new so I guess I should get busy abusing that coating so I dont mind stripping it...
