940-2 opinions??

Just got mine in yesterday. Initial impressions are very good. This is the first axis lock folder I've owned that doesn't have any blade play right out of the box. Solid in all directions. Love the blade to handle ratio. G10 is smooth but not slippery. I still feel like I have good traction. The ugly green aluminum and purple back spacer are what kept me from owning a 940 in the past. This version is a home run IMO. Here is a quick pic I snapped while cutting some shrink tube at work today.

Thanks man. I think the knife looks really good, and I way prefer the G10 to aluminum, but I am just not sold on the blade shape. I generally like pointy tips and thin grinds that slice well. This just doesn't look like it would fit the bill, but I may be way off on that opinion.

The tip is actually quite pointy and due to the thin blade stock it is a good slicer as well. This is all subject to personal opinion. A thin tip to you may be different than a thin tip to me.

Hoping this will be my next benchmade. Waiting for a blade without the first production stamped on it. I wonder when they will produce a second run.

I ordered mine from knifeworks and it doesn't have the first production run stamp. Just FYI

Just handled one of these priced at $180 in Julian, CA. Wow...very very nice. Almost pulled the trigger on it, had my wife there to talk some sense into me though. Anybody considering getting a 940-2 probably ought to just pull the trigger

Maybe someone can explain the difference between Benchmade G10 and other companies? On this knife the G10 feels more substantial than others, maybe it's the density or the way the edges are contoured, but it almost feels like glass, or obsidian or something.

The 940-2 was my first Benchmade. I liked it so much I bought a 943 and a 710. I ended up swapping the blades on the 940-2 and the 943. I like it better this way for now. As you can see in the picture, the cut on the g10 allows for a thicker area which the liners screw into. I believe this is to increase structural integrity.

I noticed right away, that the aluminum scales felt more structurally rigid than the g10, even though I like the way the 940-2's smooth G10 feels in hand over the aluminum. I notice a tiny bit of flex with the 940-2, so I put the beefier blade on the aluminum handles. Future plans are to transfer these two satin blades to custom G10 handles, and get black versions of these blades for these scales. I generally carry the one with G10 scales more often than the aluminum scaled 94x.

As a side note, the T6 screws on the 940-2 are all the same. Since the screws are longer to accommodate the spacers, the ones in the liners poke through to the inside of the knife. I don't care about this, and it makes reassembly easier for me. The T6 screws on the aluminum scales are three different sizes, the smallest being the liner screws which are really short. I can't remember if the spacers are shouldered, but I don't believe so.

I just bought one at a local brick and mortar store yesterday (they had several in stock). No first production stamp.

The lady behind the counter didn't mind humoring me by letting me take a look at several of them so I could pick the one I liked. Of the ones I looked at, the F&F was practically identical:
1) the grinds were a bit sloppy
2) the blades were perfectly centered
3) the lockup was amazingly solid

It seems like lately, with Benchmade, you can only have 2 out of 3. But that ain't bad.

My 940-2 of 1000

Love it. I've owned the 943, 940 in black blade, and 940 in satin. This by far is my favorite. I sold my 940 cuz I just wasn't feeling the aluminum. I told myself if BM ever made it in G10 in black that it would be the pinnacle of the 940. Love the utility feel. I've always loved the blade design as it served as a nice slicer for me. There's not a lot of knives out there that has an almost 3.5" blade in a 2.6oz package, carries slim in the pocket with a time tested trust lock in the axis.

Love my 940-2. I wish they would have stepped up the steel to 20cv like the new grips, other than that I wouldn't change a thing.

Is there any way to get blue backspacers aside from gutting a 940-1?

Just got mine, I'm really digging it!
I think the green spacer looks awesome and I like how you can see a hint of it sticking out of the pocket.
For me, it's the best 940 production model currently available.
I'd prefer the 20cv of the 940-1501 but that one is a no-go for me, as they don't make a partially serrated version(plus that blue/black handle is ugly as sin).

Likes/Dislikes:

-it's got a great edge from the factory. Got a somewhat 'gritty' edge, and the grind isn't perfectly symmetrical but it's damn close. I'm really liking it and won't touch it till I need to.
-the g10 isn't perfect, there's a few defects(blotches, irregular patterns & scratches), but this doesn't bother me as it's an edc.
-axis lock spring is a bit 'sticky'? and the action is pretty tight but a drop of lube and working it has it smoothed out. No complaints.
-no blade slop or play
-the blade is off-centered, but that seems to be the norm from benchmade these days. It's not too bad I guess...
-those screws poking thru the handle... Ugh. So unsightly, I can't understand why benchmade won't shorten them. Even just a hair would be nice.

Overall I really like it, and it's nice to be able to finally get a g-10 handle version from the factory. I could never warm up to the slick aluminum(or cf)handles.
I hope they do a 943 version as well, and of course an upgraded steel-m390, 20cv, s35vn, etc would have me buying without a 2nd thought.

I've been eyeing these and I think I'm going to pull the trigger on a 940-2 pretty soon here. I own a 940-1501 but I can't bring myself to EDC that knife because of it being an exclusive that's out of stock.

Its not out of stock. They have them available right now. The doug ritter grips are a Knifeworks exclusive as well and they have been around for years. As long as people are buying them I'm sure they will still be produced.

You are absolutely correct. At the time of my post they were out of stock and they just had a sale on them so I kinda figured they were having trouble selling them and wouldn't be buying any more.
