A 2016 Forum Knife. An apology, and The Crossroads!

What sheet? Forum knife? Am I on it? I'm interested.

Yes sir I have you down - I have a google doc spreadsheet with every distinct person who has expressed interest, as well as the preferences folks have if they have expressed them. I sent Charlie the link hoping it would be helpful to him in this process.

Just to be clear.
I am interested
Equal end w/ Spear/Clip primary and Pen/Coping secondary would be my preference.
Any combo of the above and I am a definite buyer of at least one, probably 2.

The idea of a lambsfoot knife is growing on me (depending on the host frame). Assuming we go with an EE pattern, any idea of which GEC pattern is the most likely frame? 68? 54? Anyone have any specs on the upcoming 98 frame?

I thought it was an entirely new frame EE at 3.75" It's going to look odd as a single-blade EE and Clip/Pen Jack is rather shall we say, pedestrian...

Some people aspire to a Cattle type knife, (Woodrow's picture was very attractive) interesting but 3 blades is likely making it expensive.

I'd suggest a blade at each end, both long. One a Drop Point.

Out of all that has been discussed so far I favor the Carpenter pattern. I will be in for anything though....well not a peanut.:)

I have been hanging back from this discussion, mainly because there are a lot of great ideas flowing here. Secondly, because I'll get a knife(s) regardless of the pattern chosen.

My opinion doesn't count for much, beyond the weight of one opinion compared to others. I will say that using existing frames, parts, etc., makes a lot of economical sense in keeping costs down. That's not to say that I wouldn't wish for some amazing pattern with covers made from unicorn horn. I don't, however, really have any desire for a pattern that is more or less a rehash of something we have already seen before. The forum knives have always been unique. With all that being said, that carpenters knife or the swell center sure are sweet!

I have great faith in the creativity of the process, and with Charlie guiding the ship, I do not think that will happen.

Phew, that's a lot of reading to get caught up on.

Here's my humble couple of pennies on the subject. We've had, since I've started getting the forum knife, no less than 3 Sheep Feet or Wharnies as a blade shape. Cap lifters have been done to death, albeit not necessarily on the forum knife. That being said, I'm open to a Lambs Foot, as it is different enough, and certainly not common here. I also like the 3 3/4 Equal End. If we opt for a punch/awl, I REALLY like the punch on Charlie's Real Harness Jack, the Teardrop pattern on the right in the pic of post# 290 in this same thread.

Ultimately, I'll buy whatever is chosen to be the forum knife, as I have since I became aware of them.

Thank you Charlie, for grabbing this bull by the horns yet again.

Wait, did I miss something? I missed this thread, and it's already 12 pages. I'm interested. Just didn't get in on the lambsfoot banter. But if there's a list for interested buyers this year, I'm ready. I loved last years offering....twice. :D

Never came straight out and said it, but I did hint ....😏 I'm in for whatever the final decision is. I only own a small handful of traditional knives at the moment but I've learned a ton following this thread and would be very grateful to get a 2016 forum knife as a new member. Thank you all for the education. I look forward to the day where I can make a meaningful contribution to a future project or anything else around here for that matter.

Just got back after a long day, and am WAY too tired to start posting now, but just thought I'd move the salient part of Charlie's last post forward a bit in case anyone missed it

Here is what I am thinking might be a good one to proceed with.
As you all might surmise, I like getting first shot at a new handle pattern for our annual knife. It makes the final product a little more special. We did a single spring last year, so let's go with a double blade or single blade Jack. That's with one or more blades from one end.
We could do a good old clip and pen, or we could do a sheep foot and clip, like the Carpenter's knife in many old catalogs. Or we could do a single blade.

Lots of good ideas. If any of the newcomers haven't checked it out, the Vintage Knife Catalogs & Ads sticky at the top of the page is a great place to check out some old traditional patterns

there will be no Lambsfoot knife this year.

Is that the case Robin? Sorry, tired, and I may well have missed it, but I thought the option of a single blade Jack was still open

Yeah, put me on that list please too if I'm not already.

A lambsfoot and a punch sounds like the perfect cigar knife. :)

"Is that the case Robin? Sorry, tired, and I may well have missed it, but I thought the option of a single blade Jack was still open "

Hi Jack. I thought Charlie was saying that GEC and he had put a lot of time into the EE and that maybe the future would hold a Lambsfoot. That's why I shut up :D

Best regards

Robin

The more I look at the Lambsfoot, the more I’m liking it especially with the curved frame.

Even though I like caplifters as a good utilitarian blade, I along with many posts I’ve read see 2015 as a bounty year for the openers and think an awl/punch would be a nice call if there were to be a secondary blade.

I am unsophisticated, so many choices that are voiced here seem brilliantly inspired to me and ones that I would like to see as the 2016 nominee. Wherever this process goes, or howsoever it goes, I for one will be thrilled.
