A 2016 Forum Knife. An apology, and The Crossroads!

LOL! I love that color page. I still have the catalog. I'll leaf through it later. The flat bolsters would add cost but I think we could stay within budget on a 2 blade.

That's older, nicer, and in better shape Jake :)

Of course there's the Maher & Grosh 'Indian Hunter' too

This example may be older than yours but the US companies borrowed a lot of patterns from UK and elsewhere. That particular pattern is very old. ...btw...I'm still trying to figure out if the 1st sowbelly was made in the UK or the USA. If you find any sowbelly ads that are before 1910, please let me know.

If I understand Charlie's last post correctly - the lambsfoot is not happening this year. Furthermore, there is the added bonus of the Pattern Production Premier (PPP) stamp if we were to opt for the new 3 and 3/4 inch equal ender.

That being said - I have updated the sheet through this post - and I went back through to try and gather peoples general blade style interests. If you are on the lambsfoot train, and you would have other blade opinions on a 3 and 3/4 equal ended frame, feel free to send me those in a PM so I can update my sheet. I probably wont respond, but know you have been counted!

Personally, I am on board with the carpenter's knife idea. I personally like a large spear main with a large coping blade for those times when you need to score something or cut with a flat edge.

Wouldn't we get that with any new pattern (not that it means much to me either way TBH)?

I'm sure there'll be some kind of vote at some point Jeff

That's a neat one, but for the punch blade. The drop point looks much like the one GEC used on early production EO & barlow 25s and the 82 Dixie Stockman.

I don't think there is any realistic discussion of GEC coming up with a new pattern for the forum knife beyond this EE. For example putting a lambs foot on a 15 wouldn't be a new pattern.

We'd get a PPP with a lambsfoot as long as a new frame was built.

Yes, but I think it comes down to the frame, not necessarily the blade configuration. For instance, I have the 761212 Gunstock Outlaw with a PPP etch. It was in the first run on the 76 frame. If they did a new 76 run and instead had a sheepsfoot blade, it would not be marked as a PPP.

We'd get a PPP with a lambsfoot as long as a new frame was built.

That is true, but I bet it is extremely unlikely (and expensive) that GEC can get an entirely new frame designed, built, installed, and running this year. It would have to go onto a frame that they are already working with that fits what is already a tight schedule.

Turn the 15 into a coffin jack, single spear longpull with swedge.
PPP ?
I was like 9 pages back thinking coffin jack (coke bottle is nice also)
Thanks for dreaming this up in my head!
Although, CC never disappoints, always sells out, I am still trying to catch up on his sfo's

I stepped out for a few days, and missed a lot! I would love to see a carpenter knife Charile:thumbup:

A few old pics which might be of interest

Two years ago GEC came up with the 77 pattern for the forum knife. Last year GEC offered a New pattern for the forum knife. On top of that it was MUCH later in the year. I'm sure the EE is more likely to happen but if Charlie asked and the forum wanted a lambsfoot, it would happen.

Was it designed for that purpose, or was it a pattern in development that the forum knife effort was able to capitalize on? In any case, I've still got you down for lambs foot.

Both were specifically done for the forum knife.

I have spent a few hours looking for an EE Carpenter's Jack in all the old catalogs I could find - to no avail.

To make an interesting knife, I have a proposal to make to you all, my forum friends!!

I was going to make a Harness Jack on the EE pattern one way or the other.
Since I made one when Bill was at Queen, I was always interested in a double end Jack format as another option. Let's make one as the Forum Knife.
We could call it my 9th HJ. I would forgo any profit of course! This would be your knife, influenced somewhat by me, that guy who usually makes HJs as SFOs.
Benefits:
A nice pocketable package - a single-spring knife. A knife that could be called an abbreviated Scout, because it has a utility blade good for punching holes, whittling, or striking a spark! A nice "pocket" (full-sized) blade would also cover a lot of bases, and there are precedents in old catalogs, showing it to be a traditional pattern.
As a committee we could pick the main blade, handles and shield.
What say you???
