A Chris Reeve-type titanium framelock folder.

If an update, not an all-new design, then I'm defitely in the camp saying upgrade a liner lock. We'll get it faster, and it will turn a well-designed Spyderco into a well-designed Spyderco with a reliable lock. :)

Lum Chinese.

Centofante I or II. (Now wouldn't that be sexy?)

Then, for the big version, OF COURSE the Military.

The higher end materials would raise the price, it's true. design and then touch labor on the are also responsible for raising prices on products. As far as high end knives Spyderco's slot isn't the $350 on up custom knife slot. I guess we have to be realistic about that. To me, BG42 while a good steel isn't really exotic, new, or even high performance enough compared to the S125V's, M4's etc. I was hoping that's the way this project would go as everything else has already been done by some knife company. Joe L.

I wouldn't say BG42 is a standard steel in the industry. In a way BG42 will always be somewhat exotic due to how hard it is to make and the difficulty it presents being double vacuum melted vs other steels. That is primarily why you only see it in limited run knives with Buck and other companies because no one wants to mess with it all the time due to the expense and general pain to make it up. In that regard it will always be a lesser seen steel than many of the others currently in use.

STR

I agree with you (STR). Who wouldn't. I think if you're going to ask, shoot for the stars. BG42 is good. There's newer and sexier though. I'm not saying one steel is better than another, just different and tailored for specific purposes but I'm thinking of a production knife nobody else is doing now. Kind of the F22 Raptor of production knives. 20 years ahead of what Spyderco's competition is doing.

As I understand it the biggest trouble with some of these super steels like S125, and so on are the extra time ( time=money) heat treating, grinding, polishing etc.

Ok, figure out what they cost and price them accordingly, but modestly. To me the winner are the Delica's with super steels people are dying to get their hands on, and it isn't for their cool looks like the companies making a living on knives that are using AUS 6, Aus 8, , and soon even ATS34/CPM154 and S30V. Companies are pushing the edge in looks. Spyderco found a big winner when they pushed the edge of steel performance. They can go way, way further too, and if they don't there are companies with nice new factories and high tech machines waiting to grab spyderco's share of the market. I keep pounding this in. Everybody saw the reaction to modest priced very high performance knives. For a little while here Sal can change the industry on a scale not seen since the introduction of Spyderco, benchmade, etc back in the 80's. From riding that wave Emerson has people waiting for knives he took their order on 10 years ago that might never see their custom ( the factory does pretty well too but Sal could obsolete them even). Joe L.

IMO, If Spyderco is gonna do this, then it should do such that the knife is clearly better then what's out there now. Which means better then s30v, ZDP-189. If that pushes the price up, then so be it. Otherwise, it's just another Ti framed. s30v, knife, and there are plently of those already.

Oh and it should have a pivot bushing. :p

I too would like to see a new knife, about the size of a small Sebbie!! That would be so awesome!!!

First choice would be the Military, it just beggs framelock. Next would be Lum Chinese, Caly jr., all w/bushing, bronze washers, adj. pivots, and one of the top PERFORMING steels not just another framelock with steel that everyone is useing. Cost, be it higher than normal for Spyderco...BUT if your wanting something to fill the "I want a Sebenza, but can't afford it" crowd it should be something that would become known as the Sebenzas equal, not the poor man's Sebenza (aka Benchmade Pinnacle & others) it would get lost. My 0.02 p.s whatever Spyderco decides i'm sure it will tops.

We probably ought to make something with a Reeve Integral Lock, not sure what to use, or to create a new design? Endura maybe?

Well, here is the quote. I'm surprised at the mild response to this given all the calls for integral locks over the years.

I think the problem is no one can agree on the knife they want. Everyone has an idea of their perfect integral, and if it's not that one, they're not interested.

Just a hunch.

OK, I'm listening.

I do have quite a bit on my plate right now with new designs / models, but I am open to discussion.

We think we have all of the "ducks-in-a-row" to make a Golden Titan folder. We also have a maker in Italy that works Titanium.

I might add that If we were going to make a "very tough" Titanium folder, with great lock strength in mind, we would have to go with the integral Compression lock over a Reeve style integral lock.

But for the sake of discussion, I would first need to nail down blade size. All else follows blade size.

sal

2.75"-3.5" blade-

i like a 3"or so myself-3.5" makes a bit to big for most pants pockets if i still want to get my hand in and out easily with it clipped-thats a big reason i carry my alias2-

must be able to take it apart to clean also-

first we ask for and get the ti frame lock zdp leek from kershaw now this-

guess those who listen to the customer dont go the way of camillus-

btw sal buy camillus so it doesnt end up in china

You are probably right, or at least we are all starting from that point. Let's see if we can find a consensus. I say:

2.9" blade w/Reeve lock.

I'd start with a model that has a 2.75" to 2.90" blade with the integral Compression lock. Then, if the reception of the smaller one warrants, maybe a longer bladed model could follow.

2.75 to 3 inches. That should not put off people living in areas that have the over 3 inch rule. To me though I could live with an Endura sized knife just as easily. I carried endura's and delicas since early to middle 90's and have a fondness for both. I still have my first "G2" endura and it's still very carryable, though retired.

Sal, do you have any idea what sized run this project will be if you find time to go ahead with it? Thanks, Joe L.
