A.G. Russell Curved Regular Jack

I think the "50% thicker" Wharncliffe blade" is not a worry. Wharncliffe blades are usually secondaries on production knives so tend to be thinner in that situation. I think this is what AG is saying ??

That thought crossed my mind as well, Roland. It just seemed a bit odd to go out of the way to bring it up. With it being a single bladed knife I wouldn't expect it to be super thin in the first place. I'm sure we'll find out soon enough once some members start to get theirs.

" If our customers like the knife, you will be seeing it in other handle materials."

The amber bone is nice, but I vote for the same rucarta used on the Sowbelly/Gunstock/Hunter handle scales.

I'm not a huge fan of AG's sowbellies or gunstocks, but these are really appealing to me. The zulu blade shape is particularly striking. Very nice.

The rucarta is very nice.
I bought the Sowbelly and picked the rucarta cause it was a bit cheaper, then sort of kicked myself for not paying the few bucks for cocobolo.
Then got the Gunstock in cocobolo.
They both are extremely nice, but looking at and handling both its really a toss up.

I'd like to see a pic of knife closed. Maybe a sunk joint ? Don't know if it's feasible for this pattern, but a sunk joint would be very 'classy' (and save the pockets).

I think this will prove to be what some posters were asking for in the threads about the new BIG folders from AGR: same exacting tolerances and quality materials but in a smaller knife.
I also think AG is really onto something here. These might start showing up in quite a few different patterns and will quickly gain a piece of the folder 'market'. If you like knives, you can't help but be impressed with all the ones seen so far.

Roland, I enjoy a well done sunk joint on an unobtrusive gentleman's knife. You will not see them in the designs i am doing now because I am focused on WIDE blades. This particular knife would ride spine down because the curve would fit the bottom of the pocket, with the sharp corner up away from the bottom of the pocket.

Those amber bone scales look familiar.......Same supplier maybe?

Mr. Russell, thank you for answering my "sunk joint" query. I look forward to getting one of each blade profile when they become available.

I do not know of any knife producer who does their own bone (Boker excepted) so maybe not the same maker.

ag

I'm sure Case does, and I have just assumed companies like Queen and GEC jigged and dyed their own bone, do they not?

I believe Case does their own dying/jigging of bone; Queen & GEC do not.

I just ordered the zulu in amber bone. I was looking for a traditional with a little more belly than my trappers have. FYI - the customer service lady that I spoke with said that knife does have half-stops.

The knives do NOT have half-stops (square tangs).

Unfortunately the entire first shipment of these knives has been rejected during our Quality Control Inspection!

This pattern was our first project with a new factory.
The samples were excellent; the production was not.

Here is an example of the discrepancies; the top knife was a sample, bottom knife production.

As you can see, definitely not AGR quality.

There were also too many other defects to discuss here:

We have advised the factory & we are anticipating a new shipment in several weeks.
I will personally be inspecting each and every one at that time.

Our apologies to those of you that have them on order.

Wow-- I'm very impressed with your quality control. I really want one of these, but I don't mind waiting until they get them right...

Great customer service and the knives are not even in circulation! That is very impressive and I look forward to them start to hit customer's hands!!

Phil, a Very Big Thanks ! I have a Zulu blade, White Bone, on order, placed today but before i read this. Based on the AGR "Biggies" we've been raving about, my expectations for this knife are very high and the same for the new "Rancher".
At this point i would be concerned, but knowing that you will be hand inspecting every knife is full assurance that the standards set by these recent large folders will be equalled in these new smaller knives.
Right-on Phil Gibbs and AGR ! A U.S.A. knife retailer who says that wherever their knives originate, the fit and finish and action has to be 'perfect'. That is exactly what we knife buyers want. Enough of the 'hit and miss' having to return a knife.
Thank you both.
Why did "you" change to a different manufacturer when the 'other' was a winner ? I really don't think there is any improvement possible over the big AGR folders. Not even Customs have absolutely 100% consistency knife after knife and the knives i refer to are impossible to exceed.

The manufacturer of the larger knives is too busy building other knives for us, like the 2011 Texas Ranger Toothpick Subhilt Barong.

Any factory only has a limited capacity for true quality (their best knife makers).

A.G. is constantly looking for more makers capable (or teachable) to produce his designs to his exacting standards.
