A little Rant

Home owners or renters insurance covers thefts inside of car because it is personal property. By the same token if your truck is in your barn when it burns, you better have full coverage because home owners insurance doesn't pay for it. It covers tools or tractors in the barn but not the vehicle. They should cover your losses minus the deductible. Let all the pawn shops within range know. I hope they catch the scum bag.

Home owners should cover it.

I had a bunch of stuff stolen from my car when I was on a wall in Sedona, AZ.

The homeowners covered all of it.

It's bad enough with the economy the way it is...now you get robbed by some jacknuts.

Thats some good stuff SDS.

Oh believe it, I will watch out for him. I nearly caught some kids tryin to break into my wifes car one night when we were on the way back from dinner. I chased them everywhere. he ducked into a drainage ditch and I lost em.

The gun is reported, as well as my stuff. The house insurance company is notified. They were pretty strange about the whole thing, but said they would be in touch after they review my policy..... So we shall see.

Confusion here. Two threads running concerning this. Why not post to the sticky if that is what the mods wanted?

One is a thread to help replce his stuff, the other is a place to come to sympothise with JW, and figure out a way to castrate the culprit:thumbup:

I hope your right man. The cops round here arent the greatest, and I have heard of alot of firearms thefts in the past. We dont currently have to get handgun permits from the sherrif to buy. All we do is the fed backround, fill out papers, pay and go. No wait or anything.

Federal law requires ALL firearms dealers (FFL holders) to record every firearms transaction in an acquisition/disposition log. When a firearm is purchased by a dealer or pawned, the serial number of the firearm is run through a nationwide database of stolen firearms. I've seen firearms get returned to the owner 15-20 years after the theft date. Most of the time it is much faster.

Hopefully, the thief will sell it or pawn it soon and you will get your stuff back. In addition, the thief will have 'busted' himself because LEO's will have all his contact information since it requires valid ID to sell or pawn the firearm.

One more hint. Most police departments have a "Pawnshop Detail" which compares pawned items to stolen items. They will keep an eye out for your gear and notify you if it turns up in a pawn shop. Good luck!

Sorry to hear that, man. I hate thieves. But that's why I never leave anything worth much in the car. A cheap Fiskars axe and some Moras - it'll be just a couple of Euros if someone takes those.

Thieves suck!
Hopefully the insurance company will come through for you.
Or at very least your gun may materialize in a pawn shop and be returned to you.

I have been pondering having a metal shop make the parts I need to make a lockable compartment under my back seat for such things. If you want to look into such a thing. yellow pages under metal (I think) find a sheet metal shop.

Another option is a steel box that is padlocked both in the closed position and with a short 3/8 steel cable around a seat base. It could be stolen only by someone who comes with a cable cutter the size of bolt cutters, and that eliminated 99.9% of the crackhead thugs.

I built somehting similar for a buddy who carries rescue kit. Baiscally a 1/8" thick steel box, bolted thru the floor with 1" wide grade 80 bolts, secured ont he other side with huge flat washers black loctite and two Nylock nuts torqued tight and tack welded a third nut over the other two. There was a sliding panel to access the gear, made form 1/4" steel plate. Secured with 2 DISCUS padlocks and finally covered with a valance panel to hide it.

Sucks we honest citizens have to resort to such means to protect our gear.

:grumpy:

Just catching up and sorry to hear abou this JW:grumpy: Until I get a tool box in the back of my truck, I don't leave anything in the cab overnight (at work, my truck is parked right in front of the BN HQ's building with 24/7 "staff duty" watching).

Truly sorry to hear about your Sig...that's the tough one to replace. I purposely picked up an Astra A75...single stack 9mm that has similar controls as the Sig. It's a reliable and inexpensive gun; when I start keeping my get-home-bag in my truck again, that's what will remain and I'll cry if stolen, but I won't be out much.

Good news is that If you report the stolen pistol with all your info, they do often turn up and get returned. I talked to some of the senior LE's in our town and they've said it does happen if they're reported...it may take a year or two, but if the bastards that stole it ever use it or pawn it, it'll turn up (just pray for honest cops).

Man I'm sorry! Lots of this crap happening around my city. As you think toward re-gearing, consider these pacsafe packs:

http://www.pacsafe.com/www/index.php?_room=3&product_status=New

I use the plain mesh bag itself, and stuff gear inside it. I've also looked at the backpacks and duffel bags, and I really liked them. In my vehicle, the cable is routed around rear seat anchor brackets. These packs are not going to stop a determined thief with plenty of time and tools ( although I can't cut the cable with typical bolt cutters!!). They will protect you from the usuall smash and grab. And, your pack can be secured when you have it out of your vehicle, too.

My condolences on the loss. Totally sucks. I keep a BOB stashed out of sight in my truck. However, I locked my keys in my truck recently and noted it only took the "locksmith" less than 10 seconds to unlock my door with a slim jim. Your incident makes me realize I need to take stock in case of a theft so that my homeowners will have a list. I don't have as much gear as you, but it's still substantial. This is one reason I won't keep my Busses in the truck. I have Swamp Rats in the bag instead.

Sorry to hear about this bro. Hope things work out for you. Being in EMS too I know what you mean about busting your hump to get what you have. As the saying goes... Lord knows we don't do it for the money. Just a question out of curiosity... You're allowed to carry a firearm in with your gear? Here in my neck of the woods EMS persons are not permitted from doing so. In fact a few years ago a guy in my strike team was fired for packing his 40 in with his gear. Like I said...not trying to be critical, just curious. Best of luck.

It pisses me off bad. I work my butt off. Sometimes over 100 hrs a week, to pay for this stuff, and some dirtbag, just walked up and snatched it. My 700 dollar handgun. gone. theyre probably gonna sell it for 100 bucks, or murder someone with it.

Are you an NRA member? If so, your pistol should covered under the Arms Care insurance included with your membership. IIRC, they cover up to $1000 worth of guns and accessories with your membership fee.

As much as I like trucks and SUV's, stuff like this reinforces the usefulness of an actual trunk- a la sedan. Haveing a solid, locked, storage compartment would deter theft a lot more than a couple glass windows- that let a crook scope out your stash. This incident is really making me think- I have been considering replacing my vehicle with a Volvo Wagon (or possibly a Trooper or Explorer; I have even thought a little about a Ranger- but I'm leaning against that considering how nasty New England winters can be). I like being able to keep stuff in my trunk- if I get something without a traditional sedan trunk, I'll have to be that much more carfeul about no leaving valuable items/ gear locked up- both to protect my glass and my posessions.
