A little Rant

Sorry to hear about this bro. Hope things work out for you. Being in EMS too I know what you mean about busting your hump to get what you have. As the saying goes... Lord knows we don't do it for the money. Just a question out of curiosity... You're allowed to carry a firearm in with your gear? Here in my neck of the woods EMS persons are not permitted from doing so. In fact a few years ago a guy in my strike team was fired for packing his 40 in with his gear. Like I said...not trying to be critical, just curious. Best of luck.

This wasnt work issued gear. It was my personal, first responder bag/B.O.B.
I always carried my sig in my bag in the truck. However, no, on the clock im not permitted to carry a firearm, and I dont even when im off the clock responding to something. It gets taken out of the Bag first. Just one of those just in case things, if I ever had to bug out quick, or needed it for something else.

Glad you know what I mean. We are underpaid, and alot of the guys round here spend alot of their own money on this type of stuff, and the lights and sirens in their vehicles. Being rural EMS w/ long transports, and long response times, we rely on first responders alot to help out while ambulance is en route, and alot of the time, its FD or off duty employees that awnser the call for free that make a huge differance.

Ok... i see. Thought maybe you guys have something going on there. LOL. Yup...over worked and under paid. I didn't mind it much when I was single, but it's a different world when you're married with kids. Hope you can recoupe your losses brother of the band-aide.

Reminds me. I had this disscussion with some of the LEOs that work for our service. They were complaining one day b/c they arent allowed to carry on duty.

My stand on this is, if they are packin, and it gets wrestled away from them in the back of the truck, and I get shot, have fun explaining that one to my wife. Huge liability. Im not goin on a call with a partner thats carryin a gun, unless I am too. If thats the case, now we get into a use of deadly force arguement, which IMO I better also have kevlar on(which I also pack in my truck JIC), and at least 2 ways of non leathel force, which essentially makes me a cop. Im not a cop. I call the cops when I need em, to do their jobs, as they call me to do mine.

Sorry for the mini rant, just got the gears turnin.:D

Williams, so if you have a combative or assaultive patient do you call for an on duty LEO to ride in the back of the rig with you? Do you insist that he or she provide you a weapon before he gets in? Your service's policy makes little sense. I wouldn't ride with a service that tried to preclude an LEO (off-duty or not) from riding armed. BTW, legally there is no distinction of "on-duty" or "off-duty" for most LEOs.

What kind of luck did you have with your homeowners or renters insurance?

Depends. If I get assualted, and the dude really doesnt require ambulance transport, then I call for Law, meet up with em, and he goes to jail, or Law takes him in their car to the ER.

I dont mess around in my truck. I will bounce someones ass up the road if they get froggy in my truck. My safety comes first. If I have to have a cop with me to transport, then the pt gets cuffed, so the likelyhood of a pt wrestling a weapon away from the cop with both me and the officer back there, and the pt cuffed, is highly unlikely.

When cops are on the clock as EMS, then they are not cops, they are EMS. I dont require an officer to arm me when he gets in my truck, and they are very helpfull in controlling problem pts. So, I believe you need to wear the appropriate hat when on duty, whatever that hat may be. I agree with you though, their is no off-duty in public service, but sometimes people need to know their roles. However, I dont write policy, I just follow it. Just like when I was in the Army. I do what im told and nothing more. Its not my job to question policy, I just treat and transport.

My insurance isnt covering anything. When we bought the house, me and my wife didnt have much. I was a green EMT, makin little money and my wife was a full time student, and we had no kids. The policy we had was for replacement value of our home only, cause thats all I could afford. I never upped it. Stupid oversight on my part. I learned a tough lesson, but you live you learn ya know? I have since upped my policy, and they now have a list of all firearms and jewlery etc. I hope people are right and my gun does show, and they nail the prick who did this, I am keepin the faith.

Same story night after night here. Our community has been getting 'robbed' blind. Sad thing is the M.O. is unlocked car doors. Not one car window has been 'broken into.' Countless phones, GPS's, cameras, and untold amounts of change. On two occasions this summer, once two weeks ago and again last night we caught a break. The homeowner saw it happen and in one case followed them until we witnessesed the same. Last night the guy grabbed the miscreant. Not condoning vigilantism...But...this was what we needed. It is too easy to walk around at night and stand stilll while the cruiser drives by. It takes foot patrol, bicycles and stationary work to catch these guys.

Put him in jail last night, Juvi. Seems he has a girl pregnant and needs money for the abortion.

Hope you get the gun back. The rest can be replaced but the peace of mind will always weigh until you know where it is.

I once heard an aging officer speak to a retirement community. They had asked how to cut down on crime. He asked them how many couldn't make it through the night without getting up 'to go.' He said look out the window before you go back to bed. He then asks 'Can you imagine how many eyes we would gain?'

And please if you see someone doing something call us...and don't yell "you better run I just called the police."

I am really sorry to hear this.I know how you feel.Last year I sent a busse hell razor ,a custom ranger and cold steel CV to a knife maker to have it polished. The box got there but was empty ,some scumbag at the postal service stole all my knife and I was stupid enough not to insure it.God ,I hate thieves......Hope you get your stuff back.
Take care ,bro.

Sorry to hear about it. I keep a permanent BOB in my car, but my windows are tinted very dark and it is impossible to see into the vehicle. Any firearms are kept in a bag that I can take with me when I leave the vehicle... no firearms stay in the vehicle.

The BOB is a hard-sided chest type box with a lid that I keep padlocked. The box itself is chained to my front seat, so unless the bad guys bring bolt cutters, it ain't going more than about 3 feet.

Thats a great idea Bro. The eyes we would gain would be incredible.

I always lock my cars. I just hear the DI from full metal jacket. "If it wasnt for di%$heads like you there wouldnt be any thievery in this world!" That and in the military, I was taught to secure my belongings. I am Gonna take extra steps to secure my stuff from now on, and I will never leave a firearm in my vehicle overnight again.

Ouch. That sucks. I have had stuff like that happen too. Ive been pretty lucky with the postal service. Its only happened 2 times. Once with a Money Order, and once with a guy who sent me cash.

DONT SEND CASH IN THE MAIL!!!!
