A couple of weeks ago Bryan Breeden and I got into an email conversation about knives. We talked about what we liked in a knife and what we liked for a knife to be able to do. We learned that we had a lot of similar thoughts in knife use and field craft. Then we sent a couple of drawings back and forth and ended up coming up with a design that we both thought we liked very much just looking at it on paper. Yesterday the physical reality of that knife design showed up in my mail box, and the following is the story of my experiences with the knife so far.

This is what it looked like out of the box….I wasn’t expecting it so I didn’t check my mail till late and it was after dark so I didn’t get to work with it any until today. Just cut a few pieces of paper in two length ways last night just to watch the other half fall away. It has a six inch long , 3/16 thick blade made of 01 steel, convex edge with no ricasso…cutting edge shaving sharp all the way to 1/8 away from the guard. It has a green canvas micarta handle, black liners, and a 3/16 tang extension, with an over-all length of 10 7/8 inches. The sheath is heavy weight leather, that rides very comfortably on my belt.

The sheathe is a nice tight fit.

The knife looks and feels fantastic, it has a great grip, and a great balance centering on the first finger. The scallop in the spine is great during push cuts.

The first thing I did was grab a piece of Bamboo and a piece of Apple wood to see how the knife handled.

and just cleaning the limbs off the bamboo, and cutting it down some I knew I was going to like this knife!

This is one cut with a steep angle chopping cut while holding the bamboo out with my left and.

and this is done with one single push cut, I love the scalloped spine for this,

Chopping the Apple wood was easier than I expected for such a thick blade, this knife is scary sharp!

Then to see how strong the blade felt I made a couple of deep angle cuts and pried the wood away.

Then I batoned the three sections I’d chopped and the blade cut right through with barely any resistance at all.

Speaking of batoning I really like the tang extension, it really works great for batoning the tip into wood for notching,

Next, after I had it warmed up a little I tried the edge at making some fuzzies. The edge, still felt as sharp as it was before I started and made some nice tight thin curls.

So…after today’s bit of fun with it….

It still shaves hair very easily. And I was right when I thought looking at the drawing that I’d love this knife…I think it is absolutely awesome. Fantastic job Bryan, very well done, thank you!

Nice one. That has a really different flavor compared to Bryan's other knives. You sure he didn't try to talk you into 1/8" thickness :D :D :D His convex edges are as good as they get these days. Congrats on your first Breeden, I'm sure it will get a lot of belt time. My do, although they compete with one another....

Nice! That's a pretty cool design all the way around:thumbup:

I see flavors of several other styles/designs here, all of which are tuff and very good! I would think that this one would be equally at home in the woods or in deployment close up and personal situations. Great job both of you!

That design has a ton of character, I like it.

M

Thanks man, maybe it's because it was thought up by two characters lol

Excellent job, guys!

Doc

Thanks, we both liked the drawing and then Bryan did an awesome job at bringing it to life!

Yeah lol, actually he did....how did you know? I think he was surprised by just how good the thicker blade turned out. It's a really stout, work-horse of a knife that works really well for my style of "woods crafting".

Thanks Walt, we really think so too. Bryan just had to torture me with twenty emails about how much he liked it and tell me about all the things he had done with it while he was waiting on the material for my handles to come in.

Thanks Alex, we really like it. We designed it to be a woods knife that would definitely work in a fight, but If you happen get one with the intentions of CQC you might want to have him put a choil or at least a flat spot in front of the guard, I'm used to combat type knives and hooked my index finger around the guard ONCE (like you might during extrication of the knife from a body if hung in bone or cartilage)...feeling the edge slicing through the first layer of skin from just barely touching the edge I learned very quickly not to do that again.

Cool design  Looks like a Combat Bowie :D

He made a larger one with a seven inch blade, and I think is making an even larger version of it soon.

MW,

I like that:thumbup: Looks like a great design...

Thanks man, I'm glad you like it, I think it is just too cool to sit down with a friend (even if you are a few hundred miles apart lol) draw out a knife that the two you really like...work out the bugs on paper, see it come to life, and then carry it to the woods and find out you were right and that you really do love it. It was a great collaborative effort, and I am very pleased with the results. Bryan did an amazing job at bringing it into reality!

I think that we have a very similar blade design liking. I really love that blade. I suppose that is why everytime I see a review that you do I want to read it immediately. Thanks for sharing, and the pics of it in use.

That looks great, thanks for the pics and writeup! That blade has a very distinctive style, some almost bravo-1 influences. Not that he started out at a low point, but I think Bryan's work improves every time I see a new blade.

Thanks TG, glad you enjoy the reviews, I do like several knives but this one is rather special to me...it's almost like it's a part of me. It's been on my side every waking moment since I got it out of the mail box yesterday.

Thanks, I am glad you liked and enjoyed it.
We discussed what it was that each of us did with our knives, what we liked for them to be able to do, what the order of priority was and in the end I think we pretty muched combined the elements and flavors of a few knives that we both liked and tried to do away with some elements that we didn't like. I really like the end result.

And I think you'll be wearing that one for quite a while!

Nice design, good collaborative effort with nice execution, and it looks like a great user - thanks for posting it. Can't wait to see the bigger versions...

I think so too, I have pretty much fallen in love with it. I keep pulling it out and moving it around in my hand and finding things to try with it.

Thank you, I think we worked really well together, and I love how he brought it into reality. I was staring down the edge earlier...I am so impressed with how this thing turned out.

Here are the three sizes currently in the works. He made the orange handled six inch first, then he made the seven while he was making mine, and then we both decided we wanted smaller ones as well for more bushcrafty type stuff and to carry around in places a large knife really doesn't go so well with.
