A Question on Gift Option

I have noticed quite a few threads going south from people purchasing knives and using the gift option on paypal. I do understand that this eliminates the buyers ability to mitigate a problem if the deal does not go well. Which brings me to my question....is this a rule on Blade Forums that a seller is not to use this method when selling on the exchange?

Just curious because I see it in the sale posts all the time and just wondered what the position/rules on BF was concerning this. Thanks

It's a bad idea regardless of if there is a rule or not. You give up any buyer protection if you mark it as a gift.

As a seller, I don't like it. I cannot create a shipping label directly from a PP gift payment. Also, it feels like fraud.

I have had people ask me to do it and I refuse. To me it seems shady and circumvents the meager charge from paypal. I just wondered if there was a rule in place since I have seen so many sales threads where the seller states to use gift only. I see that and hit my back button.

In many cases, I've started stating "non-gift paypal" in communications with buyers. Especially internationally. A lot of buyers don't seem to like it, but it just seems like a matter of time before it goes south.

This has been said a many times, and will be said a many more times, whenever pricing an item for sale in the exchange, simply include paypal fee's and shipping in the asking price and problem solved, everyone is happy. When you ask for 3.5% for the fee's, you risk losing out on a potential buyer as many people dont play that game around here. Is it really worth the couple bucks? Personally, I could care less as when I see a knife, I have a final price in mind, if someone is asking a very reasonable price then asks for the 3.5%, okey dokey, Ill take it. It does tick me off when someone says asking price is x amount, they dont mention the fee's, I post an Ill take it, then they ask for the fee's after the fact, not cool.

Kinda like that "oh yeah be sure and add xxx." That would bum me too. Maybe if folks just figured the % into the price of the knife off the top, it would reduce the flinching at adding the % to the end. Just a thought.

I hadn't really seen a persuasive statement of this, even in the discussions of PP fees. Good points.

That being said, "the couple bucks" can really add up fast to be a large sum, especially on bigger ticket items.

This wins the "give me a frigging break" prize of the day, but, to be fair, the number of entries was small.

You deserve none, nor will you get any such break until you can prove the claim. I have read PP's acceptable use policy and it does not forbid using the personal option to send people money for products. You only forfeit any moderation from PP if some dispute should arise.

Now get your frigging tail in gear and prove me either right or wrong for yourself. :D

I believe the only rule one can break involving the paypal fee's (and its paypals rule not BF's), is when the seller asks for an additional 3.5% if using paypal as a payment method. From what Ive read, paypal can yank the account if they find out.

If selling a bunch of stuff it sure can add up, but if you are selling a $500 knife, $17 in fee's IMO is not worth passin on a deal or losing out on a sale.

This simply states that a seller may not ask buyers to use the Personal Payment option. It is still OK for the buyer to use the personal option as long as they accept the risk.

Paypal is already locking accounts and denying the use of the gift option on accounts that are abusing the personal payment "gift" option.

So, the caveat is use at your own risk-- both buying and selling.

I guess if you're buying something and saying that the money is a gift, they can get you for lying. Just use the "payment owed" option and you're good to go.

So back to the original question. If it was answered I guess I missed it. Is it against the rules on Blade Forums for sellers to ask a buyer to use the gift option?

To me, I immediately wonder why would someone want you to use a function that has you unprotected in the event of a problem. It just screams red flags to me and I wondered what the policy was on the forum.

All of the Paypal information is interesting too, I was just more interested in the position of the forum itself.

Vege-Taco it really is hard to pay attention to the threads looking at that knife in your avatar. Could you please change it to a Mtech?:D

You should probably post questions on Bladeforums policy in the Help/Tech forum as opposed to the Feedback forum. ;)
