A Question on Gift Option

So back to the original question. If it was answered I guess I missed it. Is it against the rules on Blade Forums for sellers to ask a buyer to use the gift option?

To me, I immediately wonder why would someone want you to use a function that has you unprotected in the event of a problem. It just screams red flags to me and I wondered what the policy was on the forum.
As a seller, I never ask for it (seems to lack integrity). What gets me is how many buyers ask to use Gift or send it unannounced. Of course, the gift payment arrives with no shipping address and no way to generate a shipping label.

Vege-Taco it really is hard to pay attention to the threads looking at that knife in your avatar. Could you please change it to a Mtech?:D
No kidding. That is distracting!

Here's a photo to distract from my avatar.... $9.95 of Mtech goodness!!!

I'll take it! 3.5% of $9.95 is a lot of money. Can I send you Paypal via the gift option? Also, since I live overseas, can you put "tools" on the customs form and say it's a gift? Thanks!

You deserve none, nor will you get any such break until you can prove the claim. I have read PP's acceptable use policy and it does not forbid using the personal option to send people money for products. You only forfeit any moderation from PP if some dispute should arise.

Now get your frigging tail in gear and prove me either right or wrong for yourself. :D

Geesh!!!! So you're wrong.

Paypal requires accuracy in the information you provide about each payment (sec 3.9 of PP User Agreement).

In definitions (sec 16) it says (bold emphasis mine): “Personal Payment” means amounts sent between two individuals (not to or from a business) without a purchase. Examples of Personal Payments include sending a gift to a friend or paying a friend back for your share of a lunch bill.

Do you have any idea how many times I've been sent that exact e-mail? I cringe every time. Lately I've been trying to save my sanity by selling within the US only.

OK, I'll admit it. I missed that definition.

I stand corrected. :D

bladeforums cannot mandate we follow the rules of another entity, in this case paypal. bfc is simply a way we can exchange goods and services on good faith. we have to be adults and respect and follow the rules of each, or risk banning or losing our paypal account, and by proxy the convenience of both.

still, the majority of sellers require either a paypal gift or paypal plus a percentage, regardless of how many threads we have and how many times the rules are posted.

personally, i'm happy to pay the fees for the convenience of being able to sell here and for the conveniences paypal offers. i'll take a usps mo, or check from a trusted member, but always prefer paypal.

and like eric says, if i have a price i mind for an item i want to sell, i just factor in the fees.

I simply refuse to buy from anyone who states that I have to add a certain % if I use Paypal or use the Gift option. I've passed over several knives I wanted, because that was the case.

This makes no sense. So because YOU are choosing to pay via paypal the SELLER should eat the fees? I'd say then the seller should make you get a MO then and you'll wait 3-5 more days for your knife. You'll also pay for the money order, the stamp, envelope and have to make a trip to the post office.

You want the convenience but you want them to pay for your laziness?

Dude that's messed up.

Dude, whats messed up is the people who insist the buyer pay the fee when it clearly states on the PP site that it is the sellers responsibility. It says you are not allowed to charge more to accept paypal(charge the seller),or charge less to accept cash. By doing any of these things you are violating a term of service contract you voluntarily agreed to when you signed up and accepted paypal payments. By doing any of those things you are being dishonest and possibly even criminal. Is your integrity worth 3%?

Don't want to eat the fee's, then don't use paypal.

Not trying to argue with you but.....follow my logic for a bit. Then you can call me wrong, no offense or further posts will be made.

I see your point but what is your alternative as a buyer? Getting a MO, which like I said would cost you like what $2 for the MO, envelope and stamp + the gas it took you to get to the post office and back. You're at probably $5-6 bucks or so AND your time. So, that said why would the buyer complain about paying the fees? Chances are the fees are nearly the same cost as getting a USPS MO. The buyer doesn't charge the seller for his cost of getting a MO so why would the seller be responsible for the PP fees? UNLESS you are talking about a $300+ transaction in which case they could split the fees and I think that would be fair.

That might be the paypal rule, but so is gifting....so people obviously break those rules quite frequently. Right or wrong as it may be.

Again this is just my opinion which I'm sure will be accepted by 50% and hated by the other 50% of users here.

For the record I never use gift and don't approve of it one bit.

The buyer pays because that is the agreement he made with paypal for using their services.Their services arent free. Generally the paypal service fees are more substantial than the $2 or so you pay for a postal money order and postage. The rest is leg work. You don't see many sellers charging for packaging and handling either.

I still look at it this way....just as on this forum, there are rules to abide by.
If you break the rules, you should expect to reap what you sow.
My integrity is worth far more to me than any paypal fee.

My laziness? First, I'll address your opinions of Paypal, and I'll get back to the insults later.

The onus is on the seller to eat the fees. It is mostly for the seller's benefit to use Paypal. They get their money instantly, and do not have to worry about it being lost/bounced/etc. Read your Paypal User Agreement. It's not up to the buyer to eat Paypal fees. That's a scam that some seller's try to run. Obviously, you're one of them.

As to my "laziness", you're talking out of line. You can check my resume on Bladeforums Exchange, or ask any of the numerous members I've dealt with, and they'll tell you there ain't no lazy about me. ;) I'll go above and beyond to make sure a buyer/trader is happy, and gets their item quickly and securely. I quite often send items without having recieved payment, I throw in bonus items, and I ship very quickly. To make a snap judgement about me, based on nothing but your warped opinion of how Paypal -should- work, is... how did you put it? Messed up, dude. :) Hopefully, you'll get the chance to deal with me in the future and you might think differently about me as an exchange member, afterwards.

 Same here. What really pisses me off is when a dealer asks extra money if you pay with PP, as if their fees are higher than on a CC (especially Amex). :grumpy:
