A Sad day at Buck Knives

I got an email from Ena , my heart goes out to Ena and anyone else at buck that was laid off, It must have been hard for everyone involved.

Wow ! ! ! Your right a sad day at buck and for everyone else... I feel so bad for Ena... I was just getting to know her... I still hope I can meet her in Post Falls at the BCCI reunion in July... If I make it...
Ena I am so sorry that BKI had to laid you off and others... I hope things will pick up and they will call you back real soon...

Man...I am bummed. Puts a whole new perspective on things in my life. Late yesterday afternoon, I made a statement to a good friend at Buck that I felt like just another "consumer" instead of "family" with Buck. Now I feel like an ass. This feels like family.

To all at Buck, especially Ena and others that were RIF'ed...Love and Respect...

I remember Ena calling me personally about my last custom order. I thought at the time that she was definitely an asset for Buck.
 
Sad, This kinda puts all of the recent complaining (here on the forum) into perspective. It's never pleasant to see real people losing real jobs. This story hits close to home for anyone that works in manufacturing. The company I work for recently cut 500 jobs, so I know that "look" that Ena mentioned. All affected have my best wishes. Hopefully gainful employment can be found quickly.

It is very hard to believe Buck would lay off any employee that made the move with the company from Cali.

I see a very different company than the one that captured my loyalty and respect many years ago.I am hoping you all find gainfull employment ,soon.

Buck Knives has definately made it clear to me what is more important.
 
Custom shop price increases seem to make sense... obviously there are some financial concerns going on here. My thoughts and prayers go out to those that lost their jobs.
 
They should have stayed right where they were,in a factory that worked fine for how many years?I kjnow there were higher costs of business there,energy is higher,etc,but is it any better now?I don't think so..all i see is a lot of doom and gloom in the forecast,boy am i hoping i am totally wrong on this one....

Razor, staying in business is more important than a few loyal employees, but I am sorry that any had to lose there job. It's a disturbing day for my favorite knife builder. If you don't make critical cuts, there will be no more Buck. The need to do whatever it takes to stay in business. California and business do not need to be said in the same sentence. I hate china made stuff, but the knives I see at Wal Mart are very well made. See the "canoe" thread. It's a great chinese made knife and you don't have to be an american to build a good knife apparently, unfortunately. I won't buy them at the given prices, but others will and do.

As others have stated, how truly sad. And like always, Goose, seems to have once again summarized my feelings about as well as anyone. God bless you Ena; we'll keep you in our prayers.
 
Ena was a real asset to Buck. She was always extremely helpful and very friendly. She will be greatly missed. Buck must be in rough shape to have laid off someone of her caliber. Good luck Ena!
 
I feel like an old friend has died.

That old friend was Buck Knives.

And I'm in mourning.

My deepest sympathies to those very dedicated and loyal folks who lost their jobs.

Everything changes.
 
ena, during your days of sadness and stress i and all your other friends send payers and smoke of suport your way for you and yours and the others not with you there at buck...
as has been said to me god does not close a door to a room without that there are other doors you can open.
your voice i have enjoyed hearing many times and i look foward to meeting you and yours at the shindig!

Yes a sad day indeed!!! I have a heavy heart today for all who lost their jobs. Ena you will be missed...I just hope this was only due to the current state of the economy and that things will turn around and a valuable asset like our Ena will be back at work...soon.

Any one know how many folks were laid off and what was the mix of the old employees VS the new? As this all took place yesterday...it's now public news and I'd like to hear an honest reason. Is the BKI in trouble or was this just profit motivated as Roc suggested? Not that the folks in the ivory tower on top of Buck mountain need to answer these questions...it would be nice to know.

That throws a very negative light on it.

I laid out some things that I suspect are going on and more that I suspect will happen in the future.....BUT, don't make it sound like I think it's all about greed.

I think it's more about repositioning the company to stay in business.....and yes, to stay in business you need to make a profit.

I don't see any villains here.....just the last good American knife company trying to stay in business and having to do some unpleasant things to do so.

I too, would like to see the numbers on layoffs.

Joe, I know there must be a press release waiting to go out......can you give us the info?

I guess we hear so much of this sort of thing in other industries its easy to figure the same thing goes on at Buck. It really is like a family here and yesterday hurt everybody, both those leaving and those staying.
Ena better be at the BCCI event, I know where she lives! She really is a first class person and I will miss our talks. Her drive was to make everybody, especially BCCI and Forumites, happy everyday.
As far as how many were laid off, ratio of shop to office, ect. Better wait for someone more official for that.

Joe, with good people like you working at Buck it won't be long before things will be looking good again and hopefully it won't be long that Buck will be able to hire back the employees they had to let go and hopefully you'll have to hire even more.
 
Joe, hang you and Buck hang in there. I was watching the classic movie Red Dawn the other day. As the Russians were parachuting in and attacking Colorado, the boys raided a gun store. They grabbed guns, ammo, and a "Buck" knife. Do whatever it takes, and keep at least the hunting knives, and a few others, made here.

Buck is an American classic. It has to stay afloat. I'm suprised at the crybabies here who are dogging Buck because they can't buy custom 110's at cheap prices. Here's a news flash. The complaints I see are amazing. I saw someone complaining about Stag not matching so they sent it back to Cabelas. Guess what, Cabelas is going to send that high dollar knife back to Buck and Buck will have to sell it for a discount. It's stag, for petes sake. It's going to be different, more than wood anyway.

Here's an idea. Buy a buck knife and send it to David Yellowhorse, or maybe even STR. They can fix you whatever you want, at market prices.

Buck, do whatever you need to to stay afloat, but please make some of your users here, if possible. Joe Wal Mart doesn't care, but many of us do.


My biggest thought for Buck, is they need to do the customer service warranty work in China, Mexico or somewhere. It's a money loser, fixing some boneheads knife who used it for a screwdriver, so you might as well minimize costs in fixing them. People don't care where the knife is fixed, but many do care where it is made.
 
I've said before and I'll state it again here. I will pay more for an American made knife. If I can say one thing to Buck it would be that we will support them if they need to raise prices. I would only hope that the prices are raised evenly across the board and not done in one area over another.

I hope all those that were let go have good success finding new employment.
