A Sad day at Buck Knives

My heartfelt regrets go out to Ena and the others who lost their jobs. I know what they are going through, I lost my job of 37 years (the only job I ever had), two weeks ago.

I'm sorry Stomper. My advice would be, while you are seeking future employment, to stay busy and bring in some income, even if it's way less. You will bleed more slowly with something coming in than nothing, till you find something else.. Good luck to you.

I've said before and I'll state it again here. I will pay more for an American made knife. If I can say one thing to Buck it would be that we will support them if they need to raise prices. I would only hope that the prices are raised evenly across the board and not done in one area over another.
I hope all those that were let go have good success finding new employment.

well said mike my friend,
as a 15 yo i paid about a days wages for a Buck Folding Hunter cause my journeyman said it was the best...
i have owned one to this day...
it is still the best bar none!
i did and still will pay more for a usa knife ..
and wont collect any thing made in china
( i would have collected Puma had there not been a Buck Knife! )
yes some times there are hard choices to be made,,, have been on both sides of that decision makeing line...I hated it either way...
but life will move on ...
so dont none of you guys leaveing buck get left behind!!!
and to the rest of the forum i hope you take note that
Joe is reading and addressing what Bucks loyal hard core base is saying!
no other company i know of goes this far!
good luck to all there in post falls!

Hey Stomper, sorry to hear about your job. 37 years is a long time, a big investment of time and I wish you luck in your future employment.

Silverdagger, I remember that movie! Didnt they grab the knife from a big Buck Knife display? Cool flick.

I am sure that those that lost jobs appreciate the well wishes from all our fellow forum-ites. :)

Some have mentioned that Buck should have warranty work done out of country, I really don't think thats the answer...
Manufacturers usually figure in a certain amout of repair cost into the product. Although it may not be much.. Anytime they do stuff out of country they will have more shipping worries and expense, not to mention customs headaches.. Who wants to have a knife gone for two months for repairs..

Maybe they should start charging to do repairs of knives that were damaged by someones stupidity. Its a great gesture, but in the end I'm sure it does cost them money.

It is sad when someone loses their job, but sometimes thats what it takes to keep a company afloat, and we all know that the economy is not doing that great right now. We have already lost two great American knife companies(Schrade and Camillus), I certainly don't want to see another one go.

I wish everyone at Buck the best in what is obviously a trying time for all.

As already mentioned, the increase in Custom price does seem really unimportant after hearing about the layoffs...

I think you're assuming a lot.

With an offshore staff dedicated only to repair, turnaround time might improve (it takes a month and more now) and repairs might improve also.

Why not test it?

If it could help save the company, what harm could a test do?

Sorry to hear this and my best wishes to Ena and the others who lost their jobs.
I know times are hard and they will get harder.

NOW EVERYONE GO ORDER AT LEAST ONE 2008 BUCK KNIFE !.....please:D

Depends. It costs a lot of money (and time) to rent space, set up a shop, hire workers, send people to train them, build a parts inventory. etc. Unless you were sure it would pay off, it's a big gamble to take, especially if money is an issue. (And when isn't it?)

Interesting idea, but IMO it would pay off only if there was a very high volume of repair work.

Well, a test could start small and gradually increase the share of work done.

From the inquiries on this forum alone it appears there's a lot of warranty work.

Joe,

My friend I didn't insinuate that the folks at the top...."Ivory tower"....are villains. That's very far off from my thoughts; I consider all at BKI my extended family. I hope I did not offend anyone. However, I'd like to hear something from CB or CJB as to what is happening. With no clear information...all anyone can do is speculate...either Bad thoughts or Good thoughts. I know that it's really not my business at all. But, should I be sending my Gov stimulus check funds to Post Fall:confused:. Let us know if we can help.

I've been at both ends of the layoff issue...it sucks. I've also just been through the company moving out of state issue....either move to Tim-buck-to or leave....hard choices to make.

I feel bad for EVERYONE involved... Especially CJ as he is a Good guy. I only met him twice (quickly) but being in my line of work I can get a good read on people. I bet he and his family feel real bad. WHAT we all could do is buy more knives to get the cash flow going better for them. I just spent $450 in the past two days at the Factory store. I just decided to buy BUCK knives with my refund check.;) I know this is a quick fix but it might help some..I know some of us cant but it's just an idea. For those of you questioning this Company. Dont you think the minute CJ and crew can re-hire this loyal folks like Ena and others THEY will???.. I would bet my Buckmaster 184 first run on it!!!!!

You would then have more layoffs for those employees that are currently performing those tasks--that is the harm.

Along the same reasoning, why not "outsource" everything?

That is the problem in the U.S. now, everything is being outsourced. We have become a non-manufacturing country.

I don't see outsourcing warranty service as the answer. Buck has evidently hit a rough patch and they need to take steps to remain economically viable. Maybe when the economy rebounds, then they can bring back folks who have been laid off.

I know many construction people who have been laid off in the past year. I remember while growing up, my dad was a carpenter. He was lucky if he worked steady for more than 6-8 months a year. He would work many hours and then when the project or development was done, he would be unemployed until another one became available.

Now, too many jobs are getting moved overseas, and those jobs will never be back. At least, not until the developing nations wages are brought up to the levels of our country and then it will be cheaper for the companies to bring the jobs back to the U.S.. It will be full circle. We will be a Third World countrry.

Daniel, I've been through this with you on another thread. Read that to have your questions answered.

No layoffs would be required and you have to recognize the difference between repair and manufacture of knives.

Post what??? WTF are you talking about???
...apparently Rocinante predicted that Buck would jack up prices to an astronomical figure and that they would lay off Ena and a whole buncha folks...and honesttom got a letter to support the layoffs and the prices support the "jack ups"...Don't know where the letter is...:confused: ( I'm gonna go suck a straw... )

Jb,
I really should have used another term as I was not offended by your remarks. I just could not think of a synonym for Ivory tower? :)
Sorry about that. :o
