A simply stunning knife (moved here from the Custom forum)

$675 for a mid-tech knife? BWAH, HA, HA, HA, HA There was a big stink about Cold Steel selling a copy of a Strider made in decnt stainless for a loss leader price of $40 and in the listing clling Mick STrider everything but a child of God.

The Cold Steel is $30.00 and made from 1055, which in my opinion is a much better choice for a hard use knife than S30V.

Thanks for the entertaining thread guys! I enjoy a little flame war from time to time, particularly as a spectator. When I get involved, I get too tense, even though it's only keyboard stroking... :jerkit: This post brings up some interesting observations on the relative value of knives, however. In every "genre" of custom knives there are a few stand outs that command huge prices compared to the rest of the field:
- tactical folders: Tim Galyean, Ken Onion, Lee Williams folders easily run in the $2000-4000+ range these days, everyone else is a fraction of that and there are some pretty damn good makers out there selling knives for <$500
- bowies: Fisk, Fogg, a few others command prices 2-10X that of some other excellent craftsmen who are probably close to their equal.
- art folders: Walker, Steinau... heads and shoulders above the rest of the field but are they really?
I'm not sure there's a category where the Strider work fits this description, but I guess my point is, are the stand outs really that much more valuable or that much "better"? From the point of view that people will pay the prices.... the answer is yes. But for those of us who actually part with $1250 (or much, much more) for a knife that strikes our fancy, how do we determine what it's really worth? Resale is one thing but there are certain knives I buy that I've just got to have and don't really plan to sell. It's a funny thing and I don't really understand it. I think there is a component of the hunt and competition in all this. Scoring a desirable knife before someone else snags it. Getting it from the maker, knowing it's unique and others want it. Or just falling for the beauty and elegance of a (nearly) perfectly crafted sculpture/tool. It can be quite addictive. For those of us poking fun at spending $1250 on a tactical cake knife, don't forget, the rest of the world would laugh their asses off when we spend $2000 or $3000 or $10,000 on a Galyean, Walker, Loveless, or Fisk that we'll never even cut a cake with... ;) (no disrespect intended to the makers - I'm one of the eccentrics that love their work and, fortunately, I can scare up enough disposable income to periodically buy some decent knives!). My wife, kids, and friends just look at me with their mouths agape and shake their heads. They don't get my infatuation with the perfection of a Tom Mayo small wharnie TNT any more than I get the knife that inspired this thread... ("you paid what for that little knife with a 2.5" blade?? when we need a new refrigerator!!!???)
I like to remind myself how foolish I appear to the world at large whenever I'm tempted to point the finger at others... but I do it anyway... life's more fun that way. On the other hand, I do think it's worthwhile to try and avoid hurting people's feelings when I can. Sorry for the rant. I sometimes free associate.
 :foot: :o :D

Good post xuesheng! I couldn't agree more.

I can't believe the time and energy spent on bashing stuff that's not to one's taste. Surely we all have more constructive things to do with our time...

moving on to a different knife. what do you guys think about this $3000 folder?

This one is pretty cool. I like the flow and finish, nice details, the necromancer looks pissed. BTW, I can see the Strider being somebody's valued safe queen, I just don't get the design or finish of the blade. Different strokes for different folks...

Lee Williams' knives are top-level in F&F. Absolutely a credit to custom knives. My own preference is for traditional bolster and scales, but the latest trend is certainly the sculpted/carved frames. Apparently they are flying off the tables and these maker's can't keep up with the demand. Not my preference, but good for them.

I placed an order with Lee years ago. I think I fell off the list, though. :(

The Strider knife? This thread is embarassing to me as a lover of this forum.

Looks like people have not all been talking nice. I moved this thread to TGB&U and when I get a chance I'm going to go through it and give infractions where needed.

Thought this thread was headed for W&C, I was getting ready for the real "fireworks".

Cougar, every time I see that picture I get the urge to take that beak to a nice 2000 grit mirror polish... Is it just me? :D

No Kidding!!!!!!!! That post is less than 2 days old and already it is up to 12+ pages!!!!!! It makes sense. Now this is just my opinion and I WILL get flamed, but to me, Striders are a knife that could NOT haver been designed by someone who had any degree of experience actually carrying a knife in harms way. I know that a number of guys carry them, but remember this. Back in the day, the Cav Store, BQ and Ranger Joes sold a LOT of Rambo type knives to young servicemen. Nuff said.

Well....its not ugly.

While the design IS practical and usefull, its INCREDABLY uninspired. Skull decorations are a little cheesy and highschool'esque IMO. I realize this is a matter of opinion, but hey, you did ask for it.

To me this is kind of like chargin $3000 for a western skinner with a hammon, and purple G-10 scales.

Ahhhh, it's not that bad. I am a bit of a snob myself and there are occasions where i see a highly embellished knife like this where I question something the choices that an incredibly skilled maker has made. I guess my normal response would be something like "Well, now I know what it would have looked like if Rembrandt had done a velvet Elvis painting" But it would still have been a Rembrandt and the BEST damn Elvis you had ever seen......lol. I wonder if that knife was a customer commision? Just so you know where I am coming from, I feel the same way about choppers. Incredible skill and craftsmanship, but HUH? That said, I like the design otherwise, particularly the blade shape.
