Thanks for the entertaining thread guys! I enjoy a little flame war from time to time, particularly as a spectator. When I get involved, I get too tense, even though it's only keyboard stroking... :jerkit: This post brings up some interesting observations on the relative value of knives, however. In every "genre" of custom knives there are a few stand outs that command huge prices compared to the rest of the field:
- tactical folders: Tim Galyean, Ken Onion, Lee Williams folders easily run in the $2000-4000+ range these days, everyone else is a fraction of that and there are some pretty damn good makers out there selling knives for <$500
- bowies: Fisk, Fogg, a few others command prices 2-10X that of some other excellent craftsmen who are probably close to their equal.
- art folders: Walker, Steinau... heads and shoulders above the rest of the field but are they really?
I'm not sure there's a category where the Strider work fits this description, but I guess my point is, are the stand outs really that much more valuable or that much "better"? From the point of view that people will pay the prices.... the answer is yes. But for those of us who actually part with $1250 (or much, much more) for a knife that strikes our fancy, how do we determine what it's really worth? Resale is one thing but there are certain knives I buy that I've just got to have and don't really plan to sell. It's a funny thing and I don't really understand it. I think there is a component of the hunt and competition in all this. Scoring a desirable knife before someone else snags it. Getting it from the maker, knowing it's unique and others want it. Or just falling for the beauty and elegance of a (nearly) perfectly crafted sculpture/tool. It can be quite addictive. For those of us poking fun at spending $1250 on a tactical cake knife, don't forget, the rest of the world would laugh their asses off when we spend $2000 or $3000 or $10,000 on a Galyean, Walker, Loveless, or Fisk that we'll never even cut a cake with...

(no disrespect intended to the makers - I'm one of the eccentrics that love their work and, fortunately, I can scare up enough disposable income to periodically buy some decent knives!). My wife, kids, and friends just look at me with their mouths agape and shake their heads. They don't get my infatuation with the perfection of a Tom Mayo small wharnie TNT any more than I get the knife that inspired this thread... ("you paid what for that little knife with a 2.5" blade?? when we need a new refrigerator!!!???)
I like to remind myself how foolish I appear to the world at large whenever I'm tempted to point the finger at others... but I do it anyway... life's more fun that way. On the other hand, I do think it's worthwhile to try and avoid hurting people's feelings when I can. Sorry for the rant. I sometimes free associate.
