A small kit I'm working on w/ pics

Thanks for the comments guys. I always like to share ideas back and forth and well I just like seeing pics of kits, large or small.

As for the pen flare, I’ve never really considered one. I’m sure they have their uses, especially in marine applications where there is nothing to burn, but other than that I’m starting 3 big fires and making a lot of smoke.

For no more space than it takes up, I’m going to add a small zipper bag with a Wetfire tinder and some more PJ cotton balls. Then as I mentioned, swap compasses and add a bandana.

One other note, I really like my RAT fire kit, it is an exceptional piece of gear. My only criticism for this use is that the body is very thick, which makes the kit pretty thick. I could make it thinner by using one of my standard ferro rods, but with the tinder storage in the handle and the backup compass, it’s going to stay. The large handle is nice to hold on to when it’s cold out especially.

nice kit. A few comments though. You should try to add in another 25-feet 550 paracord if possible. You can skip the alcohol pads. What are they good for anyway? Not like you're going to get a jab or something. (Note: It will make a wound WORSE if alcohol enters it. Although it kills the present germs, it also kills our healthy tissue that will become a germ-food. Airborne germs can multiply quickly and cause an infection.)

I was about to order the organizer from countycomm, but the Maxpedition EDC organizer looks a lot stronger and has slots on both sides. Looks like I may be getting the Maxpedition EDC organizer after looking at this thread. Thanks for the help.

great idea to have one of these in the trunk or even at home in case of emergency where you don't have time to pack slowly and think.

25 feet of paracord is about the max that will easily fit in this kit. I might loop some on the outside around the molle loops. As I've mentioned a couple times, this kit is not to replace a pack. I keep more paracord and other larger items in all my packs, more backup fire kits, a larger FAK, etc.

Beyond their first aid uses, alcohol wipes can help to dry wet feet to prevent blisters and damage which might make you immobile. They are also excellent tinder because alcohol is quite flammable. :) The foil they are in is waterproof.

Did some reworking on the kit today adding/replacing a few items. Swapped out compasses like I said, added a bandana, a quart ziploc bag and am working on a small fishing kit. Water purification is still in the works. As I said I'm running out of room and don't want to bump anything out, but water purification is high on my list of priorities.

I've had a few people tell me they are considering making a similar kit and asking about the EDC pouch.

One thing to note is that I have this thing pretty well stuffed to the max. If you are wanting to put much more in it than I have you might find you need a larger pouch.

Also you might find that the issue with packing it is that having thick items on each side makes it tougher to close because the items on opposite sides of the pouch are bumping in to one another. What I've done now is moved most of the thick items to the left side and the thinner stuff on the right. That's helped to slim the pouch down a little bit and made it easier to zip.

Just a couple thoughts.

What a great pouch for a kit. That would make for a really good edc survival kit with a few more items. Nice!

Would it be possible to swap out the bic with a zippo? I know it's significantly larger but in my experience being able to light the zippo and lay it down has been a life-saver. I know you have other means of firestarting in your kit but in extra wet conditions being able to lay down your zippo to dry get the wet fire started has been indispensable.

a zippo isn't nearly as reliable as a bic.

As much as I like Zippos, the mini-Bic saves space. The fuel in a Bic won't evaporate away like the lighter fluid in most Zippos.

I agree about the fuel issue between a zippo and a bic. About bics being more reliable I would have to disagree. I have purchased many bics that were brand new and never lit; never had a problem with my zippos...

im mostly talking about the zippo being usable when you need it. if you don't fill it every time before you leave, it wont have fuel when you actually need it. i used to take zippos with me on every trip and unless i topped them off before i left, they were always empty. the fuel in a bic doesn't evaporate like a zippo does. i like the bics because i can just toss them in my bag and not have to worry about maintenance.

Understood. :) I'm one of those guys that would have to throw in 5 out of fear that 4 wouldn't work, but I also throw in a coupe zippos and fuel so maybe I'm just a bit excessive...

I have several Zippos but for this application, a Zippo would be one of the last methods of fire on my list. They're cool and make that neat "clink" sound when you open it but for me it ends there. I don't want to have to do much maintenece on this kit. Checking for expired or damaged items from time to time will be about all this kit needs.

Carrying backups is one of my rules, but a backup to a Bic is another Bic and some sort of ferro rod with tinder, not a couple of Zippos and a bottle of fuel.

I've never had a Bic that didn't work. I test them all before they go in the kit. I don't carry guns I haven't shot and I don't carry kit I haven't tested.

very nice set up adam. i think you have all the essentials there w/ out going way over board like alot of people you meet tend to do. i think your kit stacked along side the rat pack kit would be a killer set up for a vehicle or for a nice day out on the trail. well thought out sir

I didn't see any there brizuch. I picked up one from combattactical.com for a good price just yesterday.

Google shopping will turn up places for the EDC Organizer for under $20. I got mine off the big auction site for $25 shipped and one for my dad for $20 shipped.

I just picked up two at knifeworks.com for $21 a piece.

Roger and co will treat you right every time, no worries.
