Photos A Walk in Nature

Yes indeed - beautiful photos - lovely scenes and an enviable the away for you both, Tom & Dan. 👏

Dan you you tow a dinghy while on Serena or are you flying a drone for some of those shots?

We battled the holiday crowd,,,,to visit friends camping at a boat in area called Handsome Lake. (he was a Seneca religious leader)

Adina, is a Professor of Geology at Pitt, and found a petrified branch. The tip of my knife points to a knot.

Yes. It was a kit from Clark Craft in Buffalo. I don’t think they do kits anymore, just plans. (for this boat)
I knew we’d had this conversation somewhere before…
I would encourage you to build, something. Your sole goes into it. I don’t make knives, but I understand those who do.
I‘ve done 5 boats and am threatening a 6th.
The rowboat is 14’, wherry from Pygmy Boats, WA. The canoe is 17’, from Clark Craft in Buffalo.
Suggestion, start with a kit. They are two different types of construction, each doable by anybody. A kit will obviously speed up the process and will inadvertently teach you how to build from plans alone,
With todays coverings, wooden boats are no longer a “maintenance pain”
After seeing your project come to life, and an outing or two, your fam may have a change of mind.
P.S. you’re right about the weight. Car-toppable is usually optimistic.

Very cool 😎 ! Looks beautiful
Are you using a small outboard ? ( or are you the only one paddling lol ... just like tandem bicycles right 😄)
Wonderful news to hear Diana's surgery went well! Gorgeous sunsets Dan!
Thank you Dwight :)

I would love love love a drone 😎

The pics I shared a while ago from a drone where done by a fellow sailor anchored beside us with his huge 40 foot $ 100,000 sailboat.
I joked with him about our boats being David and Goliath lol. He was a very nice fellow.
Sailors are nice but not quite as nice though as knife folks :D

The pic from yesterday was accomplished by climbing onto a higher elevation on shore 😎.

I was a bit cold and miserable when taking that pic though. You, see, a bit earlier in the day I had gotten some weeds stuck in the slot for the swinging keel so the the thing would not move either up or down. I needed to solve this issue if I was to continue sailing today so last evening I swam underneath Serena and got it all out. When the job was done I picked my phone and climbed on shore for the pics. September in Canada starts getting chilly in the evening .

Today was a challenging day to sail as conditions were too strong so I called it quits and headed for home... but not before getting rained on as I was packing up Serena at the boat ramp 🥶

Knife pics ? Let me see what I can do :)

A poor man's drone effects lol

Conditions were a bit too much today for my skill level and Serena's size.

A knife in the "walk in nature" thread … does it count for today ? :)

We use a 2hp Honda to do distance, and paddle in the shallow or explore. (lazy)
I love your boat. Great size.
We also have a 14’ dual station rowboat, and a 21’ bowrider. The canoe is the most fun. (and challenging)
I would rather sail, but the wind is always confused by the hills where we live. There just isn’t sailing on the river. Pity.

I too have a little 1985 2 hp Honda  :) I love it !
Last year it took me all over, about 600 km for the season. It survived my abuse, bullet proof little engine.
Noisy though as it is air cooled. I wear ear plugs LOL ( I would navigate for 8 hours straight at times )
btw, I like lazy :) ... I could never really get used to rowing and not been able to see where I am going.

Here it is on Esperanza, a row boat for two I built 14 years ago for my Dad.

Engine troubleshooting with my trusty Pioneer X lol :)

Great looking boat!
I don’t remember what year the Honda is (4 stroke). At a slow jog it sounds like a B-17.
I‘m with you on the navigating backwards! I looked into a unit that lets you sit facing forward and row normally, but it reverses the oar stroke. It was $1700!
(we have the same type of oar locks..very salty👍)

Beautiful place for hiking … love the path through the forest. You got very good company there with those two traditional knives
After getting into the habit of carrying a traditional knife in our walks it sort of feels wrong or that something is missing when I somehow forget to bring one with me.

Getting ready and packing up Esperanza for a Rideau Canal cruising adventure with none other that Mr. RayseM RayseM 😎 who is due to arrive at any moment from beautiful Maine.

I keep defaulting to my trusty Pioneer X for this type of outing. It may not be the most glamorous in my humble collection however It does everything I need it to do.
I will think of another one to bring for pictures though 😄

The thing is I need to pack as light as possible this time because Ray is bringing with him the kitchen sink, the toaster and the microwave 😄

Later folks 😎

I can’t wait to hear all about your trip! I know you guys have been planning it for a long time now - I hope the weather cooperates :D

I won’t say “I hope you have fun”, because I don’t think there is any danger of you NOT having fun…

And no, I am not jealous. Not at all. Really. You guys just go on and enjoy yourselves.

Looking forward to hearing about this. Have a great time you two. 👍

Gracias amigos :)

The anticipation of an upcoming adventure has robbed me of my sleep :) I may pay the price tomorrow … hoping I don't fall asleep at the helm lol :D

Ray arrived  🇨🇦 😎

We had a wonderful time discussing and admiring some of the knives in our collections, packing up Esperanza and making decisions about what to bring, what to leave behind and doing our best to fit the kitchen sink in Esperanza without affecting too much the boat's trim and performance 😁
( just kidding, we are actually proud of ourselves as we actually have some room to spare :) )

Ray then presented me with a most wonderful, generous and thoughtful gift.

A puukko knife that he made with material gathered around his surroundings close to his house ... birch bark, antlers, bronze. He made a very nice leather sheath for it with very cool touches such as the bronze shackle to evoke boating adventures and engravings both on the knife and the sheath to personalized them 😍

He also gifted me a a beautiful Canal Street Cutlery stockman serial # 46 ( what a cool association to our adventure on the Rideau Canal  )
