Photos A Walk in Nature

Great pics of beautiful outings, everyone. I thought I saw an Aurillac in there too. And a Horsewright and a Redmeadow Cowbell.

We got a late start this am and departed from Colonel By Island around 10:20 am.

Navigated 26 km in big open lakes arriving at Poonamalie around 1:30 pm.

We debated to keep going however decided to stay as the camping area was really nice and if we kept going run the risk of not making it to our next camping destination before the locks closing time.

After setting up camp we navigated to the nearby town of Smith Falls to resupply and walk around before returning to camp.

From now on no more big open lakes but rather river/canal type cruising all the way to Ottawa.

I am not exactly sure what Ray was up to at that moment but when he finds out I took a pic and posted it here perhaps he can explain it to us 😂😎

I’m enjoying this trip! Thanks for inviting us! The gift knife is gorgeous! How great to break it in imediately.
I‘m curious about your fuel. How long between fill ups?
Ours runs about 1hr. 10 / 20 min. at varied speed. (1.1liter (0.29 gal.))
Our narrow boat makes fueling on the water interesting in chop.

Yes, Ray brought his L'Aurillac 👍😊
The other knives you mentioned may have been posted by other members in the past
Here is Ray 😎

Same with us .
We get the same running time and about 12 to 14+ km per tank ( 7.5 to 8.7 miles )
Refuelling in the middle of a lake eith some chop is certainly a challenge and I have mot figured a way yet to make it easier and avoid accidental spill.

It’s been quite day today… will work on an update soon 😊

A deep funnel (a big help if you have two sets ofhands to use) is the only aid we've had much luck with refueling a small boat on rough waters.

Looks like you two are having agreat trip so far. I hope the rain doesn't get to heavy.

Nice and dry ( for the most part ) inside my little tent now.

The forecast was right … for once !

It rained 🌧 for most of the day and into the evening.

Despite the rain we made very good progress and navigated 32 km today.

We were fortunate that the rain gave us a couple breaks, especially at the time to unload Esperanza and set up camp ⛺👍 ( started again right after )

We were VERY fortunate too that the lock where we stopped for the night has showers as only a couple do out of about 50
It felt great to have the first hot shower after 5 days on the water.

Inside the giant lock in Smiths Falls this morning.

As we are exiting the city the rain started

We found out that we where not alone though 😊👍
A couple in a canoe with a 5 hp 😯 outboard joined us in a lock
Crazy Canucks 🇨🇦 I am telling you 😄

I challenged them to a race 😎
Not fair… they could go planning on that thing 😄

And it just kept pouring down 🌧

But we also had a few breaks here and there

By cooking I mean boiling water and pouring it in a pouch of dehydrated food 😎

It was delicious 😋

The rain continued through the night and finally stopped at around 5 am this morning

Esperanza was not impressed 😯

My puukko had to witness it 😎

We took our time to pack up and dry up some of our gear as best we could
OxX398g.jpg

We set out at around 11 am for a long day aboard Esperanza.
Mid way we took a break at a provincial park and met a fellow navigating the system in a very peculiar home built solar powered craft

We met in again on the water later on

After leaving the park the wind picked up considerably and it was coming in straight at us
The final leg of the trip felt cold and a bit dreary

Ray is all swollen up 😄

As we near Ottawa we saw plenty of opulent mansions by the water. A lot of it seemed wasteful in a way

Pressing on. We are both tired and cold at this point

Finally we arrived Long Island on the outskirts of Ottawa
We travelled 47.5 km today

Tomorrow we will navigate a short distance into Ottawa where Diana will pick us up

Thanks for the travelogue!

It seems like you had a great trip, with just enough hardship thrown in to make for good storytelling later. Your future grandkids will probably understand that the “kraken” part didn’t actually happen, though…

I have thoroughly enjoyed watch you guys have WAY TOO MUCH FUN Dan .

Wow, awesome, yes, beautiful pics and fun! Thank you for sharing! We no longer tent camp, although it was great fun for several years. And never have canoed like this. And our last adventure was two years in an RV; met A Lot of good folks during that time. Our current enjoyment of nature centers on the squirrels, birds, deer, rabbit(s), and pecan trees about our quiet home. And visiting family & friends about small towns in Texas & South Carolina. Some natural beauty In Wyoming and Montana as well. Perhaps some pics later as time & memory let me.

Awesome pics In this thread!!! Looks terrific! Very nice, thank you again for sharing!

Thanks again everyone for the kind words and comments ! Ray and I read them all a little while ago.

Allow me to indulge in one last little update to say that if it was not for "The Porch" this wonderful trip and friendship with Ray would not have occurred.
We had a great time and made a lot of great memories enjoying the outdoors.

We forgot to take a picture together earlier today as we crossed the finish line where Diana picked us up.
I only have this one taken a few seconds before arriving at our final destination
