Photos A Walk in Nature

Are you talking about Fiona? I was wondering if its effects were going to be felt that far west.

And how about where you are?
No I was just referring to the change in temps. Not even the end of September but here our morning temperatures are in the low 40°F or lower. I thought the tropical storms would carry warm air up the coast but that seems to be not the case. We have had a solid day of rain (which I welcomed, as it has been a very dry summer) but otherwise no Fiona effect.

Last week ( right after our Rideau trip ) we had a few days of rain and much cooler temps.

Then we got a break from the rain and we took the chance to resume our walks where I introduced my new Puukko to some old stomping grounds 😎

Fiona hit Atlantic Canada 🇨🇦 big time last night, damages + and up to half million folks without power.

For us here in Ontario Fiona will bring a few days of rain starting tomorrow.

I am glad we were not in the Rideau last week or this upcoming one 👍😊

I may go out on Serena on a solo trip next weekend for one last kick at the can this year … before the dreaded white stuff ruins everything 😄
( well, maybe not “totally” ruin things… time to start thinking kick sleds 👍😎 and perhaps ice skating if the family let me after last winter’s concussion 🤕 )

Most importantly now, it is time to reengage in our afternoon walks in nature !

It’s a great time of the year for walking the trails 🚶🏻‍♂️🚶🏽‍♀️😎

Thank you Â, Âchillepattada Âchillepattada , glad you could join us for the ride. Very cool that PYJ will see his knife traveling. One of my favorite carries.
I'm amazed to be able to say that I miss Dan. Being a contented loner this realization is a bit unsettling but mostly a new treasure to be appreciated.

The L'Aurillac has been cleaned up since returning home. Needed a bit of spit and polish to be worthy of its maker.

Hello RayseM RayseM & CelloDan CelloDan , I've read your telling in one go and that's fantastic. Of course I don't talk only about the trip but also the friendship.
Once again the Porch did great 😍

RayseM RayseM I took the liberty of sending Pierre Yves Joyeux the pictures with your Aurillac to show him how well is knife travels ;)

All the best my friends

Thank you Jean Marc and Ray for the kind words :)

It was a fantastic trip indeed  where friendships were forged at times in the face of adversity and hardship⛈️ :D ... and I also got to admire some incredible French and Italian knives that Ray brought along :)

This photo connects the 3 of us in some ways :)
Ray gifted me the Canal Street stockman and I believe his other one went to you Jean Marc.
Of course, I've also seen pics of your green cheeked conure too :)

Ray mentioned being a "contented loner" and to a great extend I am the same way :cool:
I must admit though that I do find it comforting sharing little snippets here on the Porch while out on my little adventures ... it feels somehow that I am not totally alone :)

Right now I am preparing to go on the last solo trip of this year on Serena... before I put her away to hibernate.
Days are much shorter now and nights are cold. I should be ok inside Serena's belly with an extra sleeping bag.

The routes marked in red on this map show the areas explored this season; The Rideau Canal from Kingston to Ottawa, the 1000 islands on the St Lawrence river from Mallorytown to Kingston and areas east of Cornwall towards Montreal.

This long weekend I'll explore the area marked in black from Iroquois to Cornwall on the St Lawrence ⛵
I'll bring my fishing gear and I am hoping I don't go hungry 🎣 😁

The chosen ones for this one , hoping that my Grohmann Bird and Trout brings me luck 🐟

Lovely & cool photos Dan. Tiki is most photogenic and looks happy to be in the presence of a beautiful knife. All the best on your last 2022 trip. Looking forward to these new stories. I just finished the Rideau Canal book and realized that we missed a lot not going up to Perth. Though it was a good call not to go this time, it certainly sounds like a fine place to visit. Next summer 👍 (not with me :() but Diana would love it too.

Tried some fishing today for a couple hours around my departure point in Iroquois.
No luck … but then again I really don’t know what I am doing with these bottom bouncing rigs … and from a sailboat ⛵️ of all boats 😀

Then sailed about 20 km to my overnight spot
I had to make way for a couple of bigger boats 🚢 along the way

Tried trolling while sailing with a deep water lure but all I caught was my sock 🧦
My trusty Pioneer X with scissors to the rescue 😎

Beautiful Dan. That Grohmann B&T is looking fine and capable. Safe journey.

Spectacular! I'm right there with you. Enjoy, enjoy. 🐟

Gracias amigos 😊

I slept well last night but was awoken early but the rather steady series of gunshots over a couple hours at dawn.

As I was falling back asleep at one point a wave made the tiller swing side to side which in turn hit the bucket where I put the anchor causing the bucket to fall from the cockpit seats into the floor with a loud noise.

Man, I jumped up thinking that some beast, scared of the hunters had jumped inside Serena 🤪

As I was having my coffee later on two guys in a canoe paddled past Serena with enough ducks inside to feed a platoon.

Not much wind today to sail so I really focused on fishing 😀

I thought I was reeling a nice one however it turned out to be a chum
I seriously considered eating it 🤪 but let it go. I wasn’t THAT hungry

Next was a hideous gobby, an invasive species taking over the St Lawrence
You are to kill them when caught, which I did but no way I am eating this thing 😬

Finally next I caught a nice Perch 👍
I AM EATING this one however I will need a few more. Fishing 🎣 can really work an appetite 😀

The bite was off after that 😞 so off I motored on to my next destination
Along the way we passed by a monument to the war of 1812 at the Battle of Chrysler Farm

Oh, a friend of mine asked me to ask you guys this;
Is it cheating for a someone that did not catch enough fish to ask his wife to bring some store bought haddock and meet at a provincial park in the afternoon to eat it ???
Asking for my friend 👍😎

The lucky Perch
My Grohmann insisted to be in this pic even though it did not do any of the work
“Stolen valor”😀

Leaving the provincial park after a nice meal with wife and daughter 😊
Water levels are VERY low.
Good thing I had a paddle 😀
(the beauty of a small sailboat with centerboard is that you can get literally anywhere 👍😊)

Off I motored to my night anchorage

Absolutely not Dan. However if you had also added an order of pizza and beer that would have been cheating... which is what I would have done... ;)

Dan I have really enjoyed your peregrinations aboard Serena. Beautiful images too. Thank you my friend and God's speed to you and your lovely bride and daughter.

You can only be accused of living right my Friend. Shared haddock with your family? Only right that they contributed to the feast. :)
An enviable weekend away - I am glad for you. We brought our 18'sailboat to be hauled out for the season today. Was a lovely calm day - no wind but peaceful and serene as the bay seldom is. Was a nice end to the boating season for 2022. Wonder what next year will bring...

Hello CelloDan CelloDan ,

I'm very proud to be included in a way in your friendship. I hope to meet you two in the future 😀

Plotting my next getaway, in a couple of weeks if the weather cooperates:

FtjPTht.jpg

I plan to take my bike by car to Sycamore landing, leave my car there, bike about 35 miles to just past Harpers Ferry, and camp. The next morning I hope to walk up the ridge to Maryland Heights to get the famous view of the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, then walk down into Harpers Ferry and do the tourist thing and maybe get something to eat. After that I will bike back down the canal until I get tired of it and camp night 2. Day 3 I will bike back to my car, and maybe fish a while before going home.

All of this itinerary is subject to change based on whim.

I still need to decide which knife or knives will accompany my Okapi on the trip:

Thanks Dwight, I'll let my friend know  😁 His wife wanted to bring him some burgers from A&W that she was getting for herself and their daughter but he absolutely refused ... he did agreed to a diet coke though

Great to know that all went went with taking your sailboat out of the bay considering the tides that need to be timed, recent weather events and the logistics of taking a fixed keel boat out and storing it etc.
Time to dream about boat building my friend :)
