Photos A Walk in Nature

No outdoor activities today, but plenty of preparation.

After bringing my parents breakfast, I went to the sporting goods store to renew my fishing license:

After that I went home and began painting my boat:

When I bought the paint a couple of weeks ago, the somewhat elderly Jamaican(?) lady at the hardware store paint counter was EXTREMELY disapproving of my color choice. She made me confirm that that was INDEED the color I wanted, and my explaining that it was for a boat didn’t take the edge off her disdain at all. When she opened the can after mixing, to test the color, she shook her head and made tut-tutting noises, and handed it over with an “enjoy your green boat, dear” or words to that effect.
Peculiar experience! :D That green is not dissimilar to the green in both the Jamaican and St Kitts flags! :D

I’m only guessing at Jamaica as her country of origin - she had an accent, but I didn’t get the impression that English was a second language for her. She could just as easily have been from Ghana or somewhere (also green, I suppose 🤣). I guess I’m just bad at guessing at accents…

There are a lot of folks from St Kitts and Jamaica where I live, and historically there has been quite a bit of antipathy between them! :D Maybe the lady just had an aversion to green! :D It looks like you're doing a really good job Tom :)

That’s a rare one - a pileated woodpecker
I see them from time to time where I live. There was a pair of them that lived in the woods near the office I worked at before we went remote. On my lunchtime walks I would see them fairly often, but their call always seemed to catch me off guard for some reason.

The much smaller, hairy woodpecker is the one who pecks on the house around here. Yes indeed quite annoying and destructive. .22 caliber holes seems a bit counterproductive though unless you are an expert marksman. ;) Apparently they are not looking for insects when tapping on the building but rather using the percussion for attracting mates - so I've been told. 🤔 If that's the case, they are always ready for action. 🥳

Those pileated are super woodpeckers and their holes are large rectangles. We have a pair in the yard these days debarking the top 5 feet of a standing dead tree. Haven't been able to photograph the birds but I can show the debris field at the bottom of the tree. Quite impressive it is.

Nice knives Ray !!!
Those enchanted forests in Maine sure have been generous to you

Character :thumbsup::cool:

I ENDURED WET KNEES for THESE PHOTOS ~
Thank you Ray 🙏 !
😎

Funny timing! Yesterday my daughter took this one. Its the first time any of us has seen a woodpecker. We hear them frequently but can never spot them. This one was way down low.
Nice pic , she got the chance to photograph it.
And thanks to ron55, see quote below, I now know is a pileated woodpecker :)

Spring must be here! :D
Did I hear the word "Spring" 😍

I did a lot of bushwhacking when I was working, and permanone worked great for keeping the ticks away. Nasty stuff, but not as nasty as ticks

I was waiting for this update Tom :thumbsup::thumbsup:😎😎😎
Yeah ! :)
Same color I used for the outside of "Melody", the little dory I built for my Dad in 2007.

"Melody" in 2023 ... or what's left of it after its many adventures.
I keep meaning to make a bookshelf out of the bow ... one of these days :)

Yeah ! :)
Thanks, Dan!
It’s a pretty crude creation, especially compared to some of yours, but hopefully I will have some fun times in it.

Aha!
I won’t claim to have refined tastes in anything, but the fact that I stumbled into a color that matches one you used makes me feel a lot better about my choice 🤣:)

Why did you cut Melody in half Dan? Is there any of her in Esperanza?

“Melody” was not fiberglassed on the outside like Esperanza is.

One time my Dad ran aground some jagged rocks and the ply wood in Melody’s bottom was sliced a bit.

Over the next few years of spending winters outside water seeped in and the frost/thawing cycles wrecked the bottom.

I was too busy raising our little ones to notice it in time and Melody was not used for sometime after Esperanza entered the picture.

It was with sadness I took it to the dump however before doing that I cut out the bow to keep as memories and make a book shelve out of it

Lovely and interesting walk about danno50 danno50 - darn god thing you took a moment to post your SAK.
Next time, climb right up there on that high table and show us some Welsh blade action. :)

Looking forward to seeing more of your trip.
