Photos A Walk in Nature

I took a short 5-1/2 mile walk/jog along the canal yesterday, to investigate river conditions for a boat trip I was hoping to make. I may not get a chance to do it, due to a whole series of crises I have been dealing with, but I wanted to check it out just in case.

The river is very low, and the campground is along a small channel behind an island, but the Green Heron draws very little water, so I think I could make it. I might have to hop out in a few places and drag it over some gravelly spots.

Here is a stick I carved from a freshly-fallen maple I found several weeks ago:

I hope you are able to take this trip Tom and that you get some respite from the difficulties that you are dealing with.

The maple stick looks very nice 👍 😎
What knife got to carve it ? Pallares or Okapi ? 😊
Did you burn the grooves?

Thanks, Dan. This entire year has been a bit of a tough stretch for me. I won’t burden you with my tales of woe, but most recently my elderly mother (who is in a pretty advanced state of dementia) broke her hip and needed surgery for it. Her progress these next several weeks will determine if I feel comfortable being away for 3 days.

The Okapi stripped the bark in the woods before I brought it home. I used a variety of knives to carve it, but primarily the Pallares and an Opinel #8.

I carved the grooves, then burned the furrows to give them that effect.

Awesome looking country.
If in the deep south of the US, the The grass bed and lily pads would be a great place for a top water buzz bait. Typically there would be a nice largemouth bass hold up.

Thanks!
I just went through my tackle box and got my top water lures… which I never really gave them a fair chance.
I have not caught anything yet with this method.
I am sure it’s a thrill when the bass explode on a top lure.

Yesterday I played “Conquistador “ and claimed an island for “The Porch” lol😄

The frog has worked good for me. It is awesome when it happens.
Love the island

So I tried the frog.
I got a bite and the frog disappeared under the surface but I did not get a hook in.
I then proceeded to cast the frog way too high up in the air and got it tangled in some tree branches  ... so sad to see that frog take up permanent residence up in that tree

I then switched to a Rapala swimbait lure tied up directly to braided line ... oops ... I literally saw a pike swallow it and swim away having cut the line with its teeth.

Today I went by good old Canadian Tire and replaced the exact same lure ... for $23 😮
Next I have to replace the frog :D

Peculiar animal!
I saw a Buck:
So nice to see you getting a chance to go enjoy time on the water with your Green Heron mi amigo :cool:
I hope the paw paws are good this year and that you get to enjoy some of them

A couple weekends ago Bluegills were happy to take whatever I offered them right from shore so fish soup and rice was the menu for lunch that day.

We had not seen this bright red barn/home since last year

We came ashore on an area that we had not checked before.
It's always so nice to "explore" new places

Visited the bird sanctuary to say hi to the chickadees after a long time no see however they were nowhere to be found.
Were they afraid of Lil Rattler ? 🤔

Chipmunks, on the other hand were just ecstatic to take the spotlight today :)

A dove was not quite the symbol of peace today :)

And that is the closest this young Blue Jay got to the Rattler after a loooooong time :)
The moment I took it off and walked away it swooped in and had a seed feast :)

Weird thing about the chickaddess afraid of a little rattler.
They certainly did not fear the big Viper some time ago :D

It's a grey and dreary day up North, yet before you know it the sun will be back out again. A little bit like life itself.

Wilderness berries are either ripe, or are halfway there. A smorgasbord for critters great and small. 8 more weeks and the first snow will fall.

Red is the color of the season.

Beautiful photos !
Enjoyed the red theme !
8 more weeks until ❄️ 😮 ?
It has to be Alaska :cool:

Today we went back to the bird sanctuary.
The heat and humidity was oppressive and rather extreme.
My phone overheated from just holding it for pictures and shut off so I continued with Diana's phone lol 😊

No chipmunks in sight today however patience paid off and we got to see some birds.
Some birds looked rather "scraggly" and stressed out, some appeared to be "panting" if I can put it that way.

Others were a little better but nothing like the beautiful and "plump" look they have in fall and winter.

Best shot of the day :)

I got just a few hours out along the river this morning, but still a welcome break:

Saw all the usual critters, except for the addition of a flock of some sort of waterfowl I didn’t recognize, and didn’t get any pictures of. (thrilling, I know…)

You will just have to trust me that this is a Green Heron (my boat’s namesake):

They tend to be more elusive than the Great Blue Herons and Great Egrets which are common here. Here is a better picture of one from last year:
