Photos A Walk in Nature

On our daily walk this morning, about 1/4 mile from our house, we saw two bald eagles. One flew out of a tree top beside the road, and while we were watching that one fly deeper into the woods, another one took off out of the creek. Of course, I didn't get any pictures. I guess I'd never be able to get a job at National Geographic.

I did get a pic of some colourful mushrooms that popped up along the road, and a pic of my knives sitting on a stump, though.:)

I got started on another walking stick project this evening. The bark on this oak branch was hard as a rock, dry, and stuck on tight. I had to break out the big guns to strip it:

I considered using a draw knife, but the mosquitoes out back where my shed/workshop is would have eaten me alive.

I’m closely monitoring conditions for a short boat-trip I hope to take next week:

Temps are looking mild for this time of year, and water levels are dropping post-Debbie.

I've only seen bald eagles a couple times out in nature. Most recently on our Georgian Bay trip. They were a bit far and I wished I had a better phone with a bigger lens to zoom in.
Such majestic creatures !!!

Fingers crossed mi amigo that you get some nice weather !

I posted a few pics of a rainbow in my last post from our weekend trip to the Rideau waterway.

What I did not post was what happened just before that rainbow lol

We were caught by a storm while navigating Lower Rideau Lake.

Thankfully I had time to douse the sails, deploy the bimini and start the motor before started pouring 🌦️
Diana stayed dry inside Serena's little cabin while I braved the elements LOL :D

After the storm, the sun and the rainbow showed up lifting our spirits.
A bit of a metaphor of how life itself is lived.

Today we enjoyed a lovely walk in our local park by the river.

Saw this bird and thanks to google I am almost certain it is a Black Crown Night Heron

Before I could get any closer it flew up in a tree

We also saw a goose with a very peculiar coloration in its neck

A goose and some pigeons seemed genuinely interested in my Case knife lol ( unlike those chickadee rascals that need to be bribed for pics LOL )

They call those salt and pepper Canadian geese. I remember my first time goose hunting as a kid (I was the dog running to pick up geese) one of my uncles shot one and that was the first I'd seen or heard it called that.

I learned a few years later that it's usually a sign of a hybrid goose, but no way to know just by sight what type of cross it is.

CelloDan CelloDan , we're seeing a lot more of them these past 10 years or so. Usually in fields eating carrion, gliding over our house, or on our daily walks. The only time we were able to get a picture was when we came across a pair eating a deer carcass in a field. We were far enough away, and they didn't want to leave their easy meal. There's a small stream that runs beside our property, and I've come out the back door twice so far, and scared one off.

Funny story: The local sportsman's club that I belong to, has a concrete pool, where they raise trout for the state fish commission to stock in the local streams in the Spring. A few years ago they had to install a retractable netting cover, because the eagles & herons discovered the easy pickings.

Oak eh? Playing manly man, I see. That stuff can be a buggar to work by hand. I look forward to seeing the end result. Be safe out there.

Thanks!

Looks like a real gully washer 😲🤣!

I can imagine brave Salty Dan navigating the storm in a yellow oilskin, the precious cargo safely stowed and dry…

Cello Dan, Been meaning to ask you so how many Horsepower is that Honda outboard engine, and how fast does it push your boat thru the water? Thanks, John.

It’s a little 5 hp.

At about 1/4 throttle it pushes my 17 foot sailboat at its hull speed of about 6 mph ( 10 km/hr) No sense it trying to go faster than hull speed for a sailboat.

An even smaller motor would be better in some respects however none of them have the option for external tank and reverse gear which we value very much for our style of cruising/sailing/motoring over large distances.

It is very economical !.
The 3 gallon external fuel tank can get me 70 miles.

Now this is weird!

We were on our daily walk, and I saw a stick on the ground. But it was moving. Oh, OK. It's a small milk snake. Then I stooped to get a closer look, and saw it had no head. But, how's it still moving if it doesn't have a head? On closer inspection I saw it was a group of hundreds/thousands of tiny worms or caterpillars moving very slowly.

Anybody know what the heck these are? These are phone pics, so excuse the quality, or lack thereof.:)

And a close-up:Image.jpg

Edit to add: I forgot to add that we stopped & looked for them about a half hour later on the way back, and they were still together like a snake & heading the same direction. They're about a half mile from our house & will probably get here by February, so any help will be appreciated. I think they're aliens.

I think I found it! I believe they're fungus gnat larvae.

Wow, I had never seen anything like it.
Very interesting !

Enjoyed a wonderful walk with my wife yesterday afternoon.
We saw a variety of wildlife.
Not pictured as I was too slow to get the phone out or could not get close enough were a deer, a bunny, red squirrels and a mother turkey with several little ones.

I returned from my 3-day boat/camping trip this afternoon. I’m exhausted, and both the Green Heron and I are a little banged up, but everything went pretty much as I had hoped, and the trip seems to have had its intended effect on my spirit.

I tried to stay as much as possible in the small, shallow channels that run between islands and the river bank through much of my trip.

I saw all manner of spectacular raptors and waterfowl, but the most enchanting part was drifting silently with the current while clouds of swallows swooped and wheeled all around me, sometimes within a couple of feet from my head.
