Photos A Walk in Nature

You guys are killing me with wonderful scenery!! Keep it up!

These have both already been posted elsewhere recently, but they're all I can think of right now... I know I should have more though.

Same location, end of my driveway, Easter weekend and about 10 days later.

I almost took one down at the river last week, same form, holding the knife, but like y'all have mentioned, even with just a couple other folks around I was a bit too self conscious to do it... lol. Might swing by there after work tomorrow and take one anyway now! :D

It’s the Grouse Ridge trail head. There’s an old fire look out up there and I guess that was their outhouse.

Thanks. Yes, it is a Tenkara rod. It packs down small and is quick to set up so it’s handy for camping or to have in the truck if I have a little bit of free time. Do you ever use one? It’s fun, I use it for small bass, bluegill, and trout.

Is that a box turtle? I see water turtles from time to time, but I’ve never come across a box turtle in the wild. I do have a pet box turtle that I got in 8th grade, 30 years ago.
I haven’t used a Tenkara rod before, but I’ve seen videos, and it looks like it would be a lot of fun. They obviously work well!😁

It is a box turtle, there are actually two in that picture, you can see the shell of the female just to the right. We have four in the enclosure that I made when my son was 2 or 3 years old, and my daughter was 5 or 6. They are 18 and 21 now. I had turtles (or tortoises) when I was a kid so I really enjoy them. That’s really cool that you’ve had yours for thirty years! 🐢😎

I guess you could call this a "Walk in Nature". I walked down to the end of our driveway to take this picture of a local rancher driving cattle up our road to the Modoc National Forest for summer grazing.

Knife content: See the cowgirl in the red shirt and white hat on her horse about 3/4 of the way up in the photo just to the left of the power pole? She has a Stockman in a Buckaroo Sheath hanging off her belt. The cowboy at the top of the hill is also so equipped.

Apparently box turtles have a homing instinct, but given that they can only travel about 50 yards a day, I suppose they would make a poor substitute for pigeons...
I see them occasionally in the wild. Once when camping with youngest daughter, we saw one laying eggs.

Unrelated picture from a spot just a short walk from my house:

Might also be an appropriate moment to bring this one back:

That’s exactly what I mean. I had an emergency appendectomy in 8th grade. On the way home from the hospital we stopped at the pet store and my parents got me a turtle. He even survived coming to college with me. Unfortunately I don’t have a picture of me with him when I was a kid (I’ll have to see if my parents do). Here’s a picture of Homer today (with knife content):

He’s aged a lot better than I have. He doesn’t look any different than he did 30 years ago.

Thanks, Todd. Welcome to the turtle subforum.😃 It’s kind of funny that I’ve known Homer longer than I’ve known my wife, and I’ve been married 18 years.
That’s funny, she new you had a pet turtle and married you anyway, good woman!😄
I had a soft shell turtle during my college years, he was in an aquarium of course, used to feed him basic turtle food of course and an occasionally minnows.

I asked my dad if I could have a dog as a kid, I got a tortoise! It took that long to fetch a stick I got bored :D

Brewing up with my Hartshead Barlow at Rougemont Castle, North Yorkshire

Yeah, they aren’t very good at fetch, they aren’t good at “sit and shake” either, but they do “roll over” but you have to start them on their back or they won’t listen!😂

There isn’t a knife in this picture but I figured I better at least include a nature photo. This is from our boat last summer.

I'd think a tortoise was pretty cool today, but as a kid, it was definitely a disappointment!:D Excellent pic buddy

I have a little 🐢 story too :D

While studying nursing in Cleburne Texas about 24 years ago I found out that the local pet store would buy red eared slider turtles ( they had to be under a certain size for some reason )
We were newlyweds and finances were tight lol ( and I did not know any better ) . So I caught a few, maybe 5 or 6 at a pond and they payed me $5 dollars for each.
I found out later that they were selling them for $ 25 .
I so dislike "turtle flippers" to this day :D

If I'd known how much that one I found was worth, it might have gone in my rucksack! :D ;)
