Photos A Walk in Nature

No worries, Tom. Upon reflection, I became concerned that my well-meaning but jocular posts might be misinterpreted as showing disrespect for this thread, for our posters here and for the terrific images that they have generously shared with us. The thread has a strong momentum without my kidding around all the time, and I would not want to spoil that. I'll try to be more of an observer, which will be a pleasure for me.

No worries Mr C. I had seen your photos earlier today of sunny Los Angeles, California on my tiny and ancient phone and just sat down in front of my laptop to check them out.

Us on the frigid northern part of the continent sure need a change of scenery at this time of the year !

We need hope that this will end at some point :)

Share away my friend :)

Have fun at the beach for me, would ya ;)

I think we are a pretty light-hearted bunch here, and I’m sure your participation is welcomed, but I get where you’re coming from. I have removed a couple of my own posts in the past for what I thought was excess snark, or if I thought they might be taken the wrong way.

I am joking in my threads a lot I just dont think people always realised or get my humour.
I was always in trouble in the Army for joking around I even got blamed for thing I didn't do,Like the pink pig (APC) in Belfast I was back in Germany at the time.😁

So feel free to joke on my posts, make it funny though 🤣

Exhaustion, stress, lack of sleep, ridiculous situations ordinary people don’t find themselves in, stupidity, boredom, gaming the system - there is no better breeding ground for hijinks and hilarity than the military.
No I was just a wally 😅

We did have some funny moments its what kept us going.

Like when the German lady's of the night sent a delegation to our guardroom (I was on duty and called the guard commander) saying the vehicles on Northern Ireland training where putting off customers, they where driving up and down on 10 mark ally as we called it (that was the price, apparently)
It wasnt us it was another unit down the road.

Or waking up on Sunday morning to find the massive Christmas tree from of the square bent over double in the corridor where some lads had pinched it and tried to get it in their room.
Our Sergeant Major was furious and I mean steam coming out of his ears. 🤣

Or when in the dark on one exercise I called the CO of the Life Guards mate and asked him to move his land rover out the way,I got it for that one I couldn't see any rank tabs.

meanwhile here’s a nice area of Wales I visited last year.

Was it here someone was talking about wool coats?

if so please give me a link as I want to follow it up,I cant find it.

I spent sometime this afternoon looking at pictures of a trip down the Rideau waterway my parents took in 2007. Hard to believe it's been 15 years ago already.

After my trips on Esperanza last summer it was great to now be able to recognize the places they were travelling.

The boat they used was a small 12 feet rowing dory I had built for my Dad. He always wanted a small rowboat ... to hit the local small lake and get some exercise ... or so he told me :).

Next thing we know he is packing it up and taking Mom on a 100 km rowing adventure from Ottawa to Smith Falls, ON😱

I was glad for the high freeboard on this dory as they really packed it up :)
My Dad had some back problems and he was even able to fit a small camping chair to sit on to row ( while not the most efficient position to row it allowed him to row for hours on end )

I was pleasantly surprised as well to see that they had met the " Kawartha Voyageur" with whom I had crossed paths a couple times last summer.
Last year at Newboro:

Last year I took my Dad along on a small leg of one of my trips in sheltered waters so he could relived some memories.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, I guess…:D

Nice work on the dory!

I had to look up the defining characteristics of a dory - when I was a kid I was more familiar with boat types due to my dad being interested in such things, but I have since forgotten almost all of what I knew.

My uninformed initial instinct was to call the Esperanza a pirogue, except that you set it up for rowing. Did you build it from plans? What was the inspiration for the design?

Wow.

Do you ever row Esperanza now Dan? Still using a seat or are you a cooler top guy? ;) Your Father was certainly a good inspiration for you. His and your Mother's dory trip was an enviable expedition.

Over the years I've owned a Pirogue and a Harold Payson "Good Little Skiff". The pirogue was relegated to poking around tidal streams - paddle not poling as it was a pretty unstable little flat bottomed craft. Was a good excuse to not go out with casual friends. Usually they got dumped within a few feet from shore. 😄 The GLS was rowed and rowed all around my local coast and up some big local tidal rivers for camping on islands. Memorable times in both these wonderful crafts. I developed some interesting callouses from rowing the skiff the miles I did. Looking forward to some more small boat adventuring.

Building the right craft for my own future expeditions will be the first project of my "retirement". Maybe we can talk about a future small boat regatta? Your place or mine!

Cool write up Dan. I hope you get to be as adventurous as your Dad when you reach his age. Nice way to spent some retirement time. Dorys are useful Great Lakes boats with their tall freeboard. I always wanted to build one with a sail for low effort, quiet, harbor to harbor cruising along Lk. Michigan's coast. There is plenty of available camping and you are welcome to the idea if you like the concept, no charge my friend. :)
Of course you'd have to be packin' something nautical like this Italian Navy knife.

See how I worked in the knife content?
