If you have not visited the national park at Assateague yet, you should. Maybe 15 minutes drive from OC, something like $25 for a 7-day pass (per car, not person), wild ponies and all sorts of fish and waterfowl, boat rentals, and if you go on a weekday morning, no real crowds. When I go to OC, that’s where I spend my mornings. Not a lot of nature in OC, but here are a few favorites from the trip thus far.

Chincoteague/Assateague are actually our usual get away.If you have not visited the national park at Assateague yet, you should. Of course you probably already know that, but for those thinking of visiting MD it is useful information.

Left to my own devices, I would never set foot in OC, but when the girls were little it was an affordable close-by vacation, and my wife enjoyed the shopping and whatnot. This is my first time ‘back’ in OC in over 10 years. As you mentioned, the Chincoteague crowds, or lack there of rather, are wonderful.
