Photos A Walk in Nature

Took a leisurely 8 mile stroll along the C&O canal towpath today. I started at Violettes Lock where the river is pretty wide:

The abomination you see on the far shore is a Trump-owned golf resort:

The Maryland side has an inlet lock, and the Virginia side has the upstream end of the Seneca Falls section of George Washington’s “Patowmack Canal”.

I walked 4 miles upstream to one of the many small campgrounds the Park Service maintains along the canal, and then back down to just past where I started, where I spent a half hour or so pushing through thick brush, hopping across rocks, and splashing around a little in a small side channel looking for a way out to the main channel to fish:

I eventually gave up and went back upstream to an easier access point, where I fished a little but didn’t catch anything.

Heres a 15 minutes video about the area.
Love everything about that post, the mountain, the flowers, toad, and that gorgeous knife. 😎👍

If you have not visited the national park at Assateague yet, you should. Maybe 15 minutes drive from OC, something like $25 for a 7-day pass (per car, not person), wild ponies and all sorts of fish and waterfowl, boat rentals, and if you go on a weekday morning, no real crowds. When I go to OC, that’s where I spend my mornings.

Of course you probably already know that, but for those thinking of visiting MD it is useful information.

Chincoteague/Assateague are actually our usual get away.

This is my first time ‘back’ in OC in over 10 years. As you mentioned, the Chincoteague crowds, or lack there of rather, are wonderful.

Left to my own devices, I would never set foot in OC, but when the girls were little it was an affordable close-by vacation, and my wife enjoyed the shopping and whatnot.

Assateague in the mornings, and kiddie rides, ice cream, funnel cakes, Thrashers fries, and shopping for t-shirts in the evenings was enough to keep everybody reasonably entertained. We never spent more than 2 night there though - I don’t think I could handle it.

My wife wants to go again this year for old times’ sake. I agreed, but in return I will demand a couple of solo bike-camping trips…

Took a short walk through the Fort Harrod State Park this morning, after getting breakfast at the diner, a block away. Wanted to grab some shots of the old and huge Osage Orange tree that has been there for over 200 years. In hind sight, I thought that I should have taken my Osage OrangeTC Barlow with me, however, I never feel knife deprived when toting an old knife.
