A Weapon Knife?

If it was me, I would go with a nice can of pepper spray with a streamer tip. Being a LEO for the past 24 years and a pepper spray instructor trust me it works. The streamer will let you keep distance from the intruder but yet give you the ability to deliver the pepper spray to there face, I would spray like a T right up the bridge of the nose, across the eyes or eye brows like the letter T. Trust me you do that and they are down. Also keeping distance is twofold they don't get near you and it gives the pepper spray a chance to really get working. The pepper spray works on all the mucous membranes, so if you hit the nose and eyes the dumb ass will probably take a quick breath and suck some of that shit in his mouth and walla you have some time to call for help get you son and get out.

Intimidation factor is everything. So I vote for the RBK. If you at least look like you know what you're doing, and you have a giant kukri, not too many home invaders want to mess. Then again, I can look pretty intimidating even without a blade if I want, and I DO know how to use it. Also, if you don't want to deal with an actual gun, you could pick up an airsoft gun. At night, a home invader can't tell the difference. Scared the crap out of one guy who broke into my house with an airsoft M4. Didn't know the guy was there, walked out, and there he was, with me cradling what looked like an assault weapon. Never seen a guy flee that fast before.

Knives suck for defensive weapons, they really only excel as weapons offensively, and with surprise and stealth to go along with it.

Home defense should be a 410 shotgun. You can pick one up for the price of a BK3. You don't need allaborate , you just need something to cover the door of your bedroom while you dial 911 on your cell.

I keep a hand gun, flashlight, folder, and cellphone on my nightstand. When I am away from home, my wife has the same setup. The idea is to collect everyone in one room call 911, then point the gun at the doorway and shoot anyone thats not a cop.

Also, you might wanna check into getting you a dog. A well trained one. For a woman and her family on their own, a good well trained pooch is a great deterent and home defense. As well as the best alarm on yhe market.

Please don't rely on your blade or bat, you won' t win. Most folks won't win that scenario, mostly because if some one has made the decision for aggrivated breaking and entering, a knife or a bat will not deter the in the slightest.

Good luck with your decision.

You have to remember something, it's easy for people to tell you to grab a big knife and get em, but you still have to get close enough to use it which give them the same opportunity to grab you or the blade, distance is your friend here, also are you prepared to actually do it, look into there eyes and do it, trust me it's not that easy to do.

Thank you for all the suggestions. Really drives home the point that I have NO CLUE what I am doing. LOL. But I know I will figure it out. I think I'm going to look into some local ranges for classes for my son...and myself. I never really had a fear of anything. I always knew I would do what I had to get the ones I love out. With being in a new area. By myself with my son. In the woods(ish). I have to feel that I can protect him.

Really going to go for the taser though. I like that a lot. I think that would be great if the jackwagon gets to close for my comfort zone.

The dog thing...hahaha. Thrill knows my critters are not really considered "dogs." You give them treats and I am screwed. LOL. I'm pretty sure my one would even bring the guy a ball.

That depends on the person. Some people (ex-cons or someone high on hard drugs, or really drunk for example) will walk thru pepper spray. I have seen it happen...But no matter how used to it you are, or how chemically altered you are....nobody can argue with electricity. I vote Tazer over pepper spray any day. there's a reason why most cops carry tazers instead of spray these days.

I love shotguns, I really do..thats my personal choice in home defense, thats what stays by my bed...but for some people a handgun is better. If u dont have the physical strength to handle a shotgun well, or if the intruder grabs it, can you hold onto it? A handgun can be tucked up against your body when going thru a doorframe or across a dark hall to get your son. If someone tries to grab the short barrel handgun, there aint much to get hold of, and the short barrel (compared to a shotgun, I dont mean u have to have a snubnose handgun) means that if they are in the angle to grab it they are in the ''shooting cone''.

I have to agree with you, the Taser kicks ass, believe it or not in NJ we still don't have them, but the state passed the law for us to carry them and im also an instructor for them. The civilian model work great, the difference between the two is once you fire it it delivers the shock for approx 25 to 30 seconds which give you plenty of time to get out. The ones were using deliver a 5 second shock, but we can deliver it again if necessary or hold the trigger. I can tell you from my experience when you get hit with one, you cant do shit about it, I only rode it for 5 seconds I can only imagine what 30 seconds straight would feel like.

LOL! Everybody remembers the date and place where they got hit with the juice-gun! It sucks.

My first cousin was a hardass when he was young...he aint scared of knives, guns, clubs, or pepper sprays....he did time in state pen once and several county lockup stints. But he can remember each and every time he got tazered...he hates them, the only thing you could pull on him that would make him hesitate IS a stun-gun.

I once sprayed him with pepper spray in the backyard on a bet, he won...he coughed, gagged, almost threw up, his eyes watered.....but he walked thru it and got to me. Spray works best on people with asthma/allergies or first-time sprayees.

Disregard the baseball bat idea all these guys are throwing at you unless you have their strength. Otherwise, what would be a solid hit with them would just be something to piss the intruder off with you. You need a level playing field. To me that means a gun, pepper spray, stungun, or knife. A small gun can pack a larger caliber, say a .38 with no hammer that will fit into pockets or anywhere you wanna hide it. Pepper spray and/or stunguns have immediate reactions, so will put you in a position of control faster. If you want to choose a knife instead, choose a lightweight knife that will inflict deep damage quickly and discourage a counterattack. These guys would have you worrying more about the aftereffects of defending yourself and your son than your lives. Someone comes into your house, run. If you can't, take on the role of a mother bear protecting her cub. What happens after should not be in your thoughts when your life is at stake. I hope my perspective has been helpful. I'd also like to add, if I didn't make it clear, that there are many non-lethal weapons that would work far better than a gun or knife. The key is to gain control of the situation quickly, and keep that control, and for a woman, that means having better tools and faster reflexes than a larger, possibly stronger male.

The restaurant I used to work at. We would lock someone in the walk in, and blast pepper spray into the vent and watch them suffer. After a while we couldn't get anyone to get into the walk in voluntarily when we were slow. SO we started taking bets on how long we could stay in there. It got to the point that we would stay in there drinking beer while the pepper spray was just spraying.

I fully agree with the taser idea. It's a really good idea if you don't have a gun yet.

"The idea is to collect everyone in one room call 911, then point the gun at the doorway and shoot anyone thats not a cop." Moose

I'm gonna go with the plan part being more important that the actual weapon- Me I've got an upstairs bedroom, any one breaks in I'll announce loudly that I've called cops, they can take anything they want but I'm armed and if they venture upstairs I'll kill em. Nothing in my home is worth the additional risk.

That's my basic plan, not saying its right for everyone, but I think it's best to come up with something that fits your situation/training etc.

As for the Knife- why not a bk9? It's handle is the same as a 7 and it's only slightly larger but I do think intimidation is clutch. Most thieves etc, aren't looking for a fight and if they think even for a minute that you'll put up a serious fight, they may rather flee. Give em an easier option and encourage them to take it, I say.

The only time i personally use a knife for self defense is for dogs. This might sound harsh but as a cable installer I go into alot of backyards and have been biten twice its why my esee 3 is now on my tool belt at all times. As for home defense I have a modified remington 870 and my trusty glock 19. If your just totally aginst the gun idea a stun gun is about your best bet. The problem with pepper spray is you have no idea the mind set of someone breaking into your home. Drugs or any number of other things can cause pepper spray to be useless but a remington golden saber 9mm placed in the right location will stop and intruder no matter the mind set they are in

I can't thank you all enough for the suggestion. Thanks to you and Amazon...I have a shiny new pink taser coming to me. :D (Yeah Yeah...I'm a girl. It's pink..so what. :p )

RemyKaze....I'm a tough cookie, but not that tough. Don't even think I could hit a homerun. So just pissing the person off enough to have him start wacking me with it...nah.

Thrill....Me with a shot gun? Okay...started laughing so hard I might have peed a bit. I would so hit the ceiling or something and not the guy. I may make him deaf though. That could work.

I will say that the sound of any pump shotgun racking a shell into the chamber, has probably deterred more crimes than even the sight of the shotgun. a 20 gauge or a 410 pump is a fantastic home defense gun. They are not expensive, require pretty much no marksmanship (just point it in the direction of what you want hit, if its loaded with shot) and they are devastatingly effective against flesh in close quarters. The multi shot that's made for hitting birds at multiple ranges is terrifying as a home defense round, and its not going to travel much farther than your target or a wall that it hits.

PatrickKnight...I can really see where a knife would be handy with an animal attack. I'm a big animal lover, but ya know....I'd mess a dog up if they tried hurting my boy.

A shotgun has the right ballistics for inside the house, but it's hard to operate a phone and a shotgun at the same time, or wrangle a child.
I tried to clear the house once with my (empty) Mossberg once, as an exercise, and it was too cumbersome in tight quarters.
