A2 Steel Update

A.Demko, did you guys ever consider A8(mod) for the hard use knives? Like 3V it's pretty expensive but it does make outstanding large tough knives. It could make a pretty darn impressive Trailmaster. If you are going to import steel into Taiwan you have all kinds of choices including but not limited to 3V.

Much of the local steel industry Taiwan smelts in the PRC and Vietnam etc. ( what a cluster of fiascos that has been for the Vietnamese) and having subpar batches like the A2 you guys tried buying show up isn't really surprising. Even Japan has ties to the PRC steel industry so buying Japanese company steel sent to Taiwan may come from the mainland as does some US steel sold here but that is changing fortunately. Misrepresenting origins and composition of steel is not all that uncommon . The difference is we will send people to prison for that like one person from an American company has found out recently.
I agree A8mod is a very good steel for the knives in question and could defiantly be a good candidate.

I hadn't even heard of A8(modified) as a knife steel. Looking it up on zknives, they say that it's even tougher than 3V, although not as tough as 5160. So yeah, I'd love to see this in big knives.

If there is a good supply of 3v for them,in the sizes and thicknesses they need, and they have a good heat treating source, right now there is really no need to look at any other steels. All that will do at this point is set this whole thing back many more months.Seems like they are pretty geared up to get them made sooner than later.

An interesting note; if the steel is made here and cut, heat treated and finished in Taiwan, wouldnt that qualify it for being made in the U.S.? its heat treated and finished in Taiwan, its not actually fabricated there from the begining.
From what I once researched on the internet, I think "made in usa" means the knife is actually made into a knife in USA. So no, even if the steel is made in USA and cut, heat treated in USA, the knife would not be "made in USA". It would just be piece of steel shaped like a knife. (For example, if York Barbell uses steel that is made in USA but makes the steel into a barbell in Canada, then it's made in Canada.)

I'm sure that some unethical companies may make use of semantics to twist the meaning for false advertising purposes, but hopefully CS will never do that. Ethics in business are very important. Everyone should be using the same definitions, otherwise, it turns into chaos for the consumer.

The interesting thing is where do you draw the line in toughness. For example I wanted something tougher that 3v so I made a batch of hatchets and 6" fixed blades from 1V. (tougher that 3v but less edge holding ) a fair trade off depending on the product. Honestly 3v usually has all the toughness you could need and good edge holding. Like most things there is a trade off , toughness goes up edging hold goes down and the opposite is usually true also. Its all about finding the right balance for the desired use or attributes you want in a knife

Some items we make fall under the "could be called made in the USA " category , however we do not take advantage of that because it can be ambiguous or misleading, Lynn is pretty adamant about that stuff.

Thats why i think 3v is the way to go as well.

I think 3V is way tougher than many can even ask for, 1V would be insanley tough tho, but also less edge holding would place it closer to S7.
Looking at edge retention, toughness and corrosion resistancem the 3V is pretty well rounded steel.

People that need that much toughness that 3V isn't enough so they need 1V are pretty rare.

This is great to hear and it (being an ethical company) certainly raises Cold Steel a few notches more in my eyes. Cold Steel has been my favorite knife company since I became a knife aficionado.

I chose 1v for added toughness and easier to resharpen, It should be like A-2 in edge holding better and like S-7 in toughness. Your right though 3v is the total package for me

I dont know that yet
And THAT is the issue AGAIN
There is NOT a reason for loyal customers from the beginning to tolerate being lied to about A2
then no release date on the compromise that took ALMOST TWO YEARS
In no way shape or form is what Cold Steel did honorable nor is it acceptable.
Any wagers there will be nothing in 2020??

And so what if there isn't? Maybe you've noticed the world is pretty messed up right now? If the release date of a new knife is your biggest concern with everything else going on, consider yourself very lucky, and relax.

ETA: Curious why you are even here? You have 8 posts in 6 years, and they are all just to complain, either about CS, or some kydex company.

Lie is a strong accusation. Some men take it personal.

Gatorsnake; Oh, please youd think they were trying to come up with a vaccine for the corona virus; Shit happens.3v is well worth the wait. Look at the idiots waiting 6 years for a Randall ? Ill take 3v over A2 any day.Mr Demko was good enough to come on here and give us this information, its just a friggin knife;they didnt lie about anything; they tried A2 and it wasnt up to their expectations, which is good; they are trying to give us the best product they can,and 3v puts that above and beyond .

sorry I thought the forum was open to all on open and honest discussions on the topic
and personal attacks were not allowed???

Generally I do not have the time for the forum and issues in general are not that significant to ME.
Do I need to remind the customers here the A2 was advertised in 2019 YEAR BEFORE circumstances in the world suddenly changed?? If you read my previous post I encourage and IN MY OPINION products should be ready to release when they are advertised AS COLD STEEL DOES AT TIMES: NOT ALWAYS.
I applaud Mr. Demko taking his time as a matter of FACT
Sat, Aug 15 at 5:34 PM I emailed Mr. Demko to tell him about this post and his name being used in the post.
I have no idea if my email was seen, read or any influence over the matter what so ever.

The fact is this Cold Steel advertised products they never released.
FACT it is a LIE to advertise a product and not release said product.
FACT They are now promoting replacement products with no release time.
FACT As of last weekend many Cold steel distributors you could still pre order A2 steel products
OPINION This leads me to believe that distributors had not been told the cancelation.
Don't take my opinion the FACTS stand on their own merit good or bad.

The forum is indeed open to all, but the idea is to hang around and contribute to the community. With so few posts, and them being only to complain, it is a reasonable question to wonder why you even bother posting here at all. As for personal attacks...where?

And I wouldn't really consider the talk about 3V here as "promoting replacement products". When it's officially announced to the market then it's being promoted.
