Adventure Begins...Sailing S/V ORCA From California to Alaska.....

Wow, that's HUGE...

166b.jpg

Another leaner...

168.jpg

This part of the road is really torn up. They are adding height to it...

173.jpg

BTW, this is about twenty miles from the border...

176.jpg

177.jpg

The border checkout on the US side. Going OUT of Alaska is painless, you just drive through...

Coming into Alaska is a different story...

183.jpg

185.jpg

Turn the clocks ahead an hour...

187.jpg

Entering Yukon Territory...Sorry, it seems to be pretty dusty still....

188.jpg

Officially entering Canada...

190.jpg

.

Looks like Alaska, huh....;)

212.jpg

The red flags tells that the road is ROUGH..and it is REALLY, REALLY ROUGH all the way to Destruction Bay...

219.jpg
...

Still looks like "home"

225.jpg

After about 20 miles or so, the Canadian customs house...

Sorry about the dusty looking pictures...

233.jpg

I find Canadian people to be friendly and nice but I don't know why the people manning the Canadian side of the border are always so cold and unfriendly. :(

Maybe they are trained to be that way... ?

They surely have a nice chopper...

236.jpg

.

IS IT OK TO POST PICTURES OF THE BORDER-PATROL/CUSTOM'S HOUSES OR NOT????:eek:

.

Entering Beaver Creek...

238.jpg

This is about the size of it...

239.jpg

240.jpg

A quaint little church...

248b.jpg

Closer up...

248.jpg

No hunting corridor...

249.jpg

I stopped on the side of the road and this crow was sitting on an outhouse...

267.jpg

I've always liked crows and I found him curious and beautiful...

269.jpg

He flew to the ground but did not leave on my account....

276.jpg

This is kind of unusual shot because of the way his eye is covered with a membrane and it's so blue...and wow, what a strong beak...

277.jpg

This is different..

.
.

Lot of these little places on the way are closed. You never know if the next gas station is open, or motel either...

322.jpg

White River use to be one of my favorite places to stop. The place had the best sourdough French bread.
It was made with 96 year old sourdough starter. That was in the early 1990's. They gave me some starter that year
and I took it home and loved using it.

They also had a wicked sense of humor. ;) The dining room was connected to the motel and on the dining room wall
was a plaque that said. "Checkout time 11am so we can use the sheets for tablecloths during lunch...":barf:

The place is closed now. It was closed last year also...:(

I'd like to see a river as big as this when it's running full blown and in torrents...

334.jpg

Finally getting to Destruction Bay area. This is tiny a Native community called Burwash landing...

354.jpg

355.jpg

Kluane Lake is still covered with ice....

361.jpg

Destruction Bay....Only a few buildings....

374.jpg

422.jpg

Going past the end of the lake...

441.jpg

You notice, there is not much traffic on the road....

467.jpg

469.jpg

Then all of a sudden there is a place...Notice it says "closed" on the sign here too...

496.jpg

497.jpg

At last, outskirts of Haines Junction...

501.jpg

Getting into Civilization....

507.jpg

Police station on the right. There is always a cruiser parked visibly. It makes people slow down...

512.jpg

This is at the intersection too...

513.jpg

To me, it somehow looks like a giant cupcake with the figurines popping out of the frosting...;)

Looking for a place for the night. Again the prices were sky high, but I noticed a sign for an affordable cabin.

I made an offer and the Gentleman of the house took it. What a wonderful little cabin it was...
It was full of little touches by the Lady of the house. Those touches made it feel like home...

Here is the cabin and the nice owner...

523.jpg

I moved right in...lol....

520.jpg

517.jpg

542.jpg

544.jpg

Very functional little kitchen area....

521.jpg

Skylight too...

533.jpg

The only source of heat.

534.jpg

Plenty of wood....

535.jpg

...aah.....the warmth.... (started the fire after coming back from the dinner and "concert", but the picture fitted here...)
